Minecraft Multiplayer Goes Down As Minecraft.net Gets Attacked

It's not easy being indie.

Oh, the things you can build in Minecraft! This is awesome, DynamiteKyle.
Oh, the things you can build in Minecraft! This is awesome, DynamiteKyle.
So, you're having problems logging into your Minecraft account and getting into multiplayer servers. There's a reason for this. Someone (or a group) is currently DDoS attacking the game's hub, Minecraft.net, and the strain is causing problems on the player's end.

On October 20, the game's creator, Markus Persson (or "Notch") updated his blog stating that he believed the site was being assaulted. Later in the day he backed off that assessment, only to come around again after confirming that his problems were indeed the result of a malicious flood.

"SYN flood, apparently," Notch wrote, explaining what was happening. He continued in the short post, "I've learned a lot today. One of those lessons is [that I need to] hire a Linux guru."

Speaking with us today, Notch said that the Minecraft forums community has been a big help in identifying what is going on. With their aid and an ISP confirmation, Notch was able to fix the damage of one attack, shortly before another and larger DDoS attack started.

"I didn't realize it was an attack at first," Notch told us via e-mail. "I got some great help from the people running the Minecraft forums, and then my server host confirmed it was a DDoS attack. We fixed the initial attack, but then a larger one started."

This morning, Notch provided an update about current events on his blog. Minecraft is still the victim of an ongoing DDoS attack, and just like the yesterday, Notch has no clue why his site is being targeted. "As to why Minecraft.net is being targeted, I'm not sure," Notch wrote. "While the guys hosting my server are looking into things, I'll get back to coding." The game's Halloween update, which adds a new realm, fishing, jack-o-lanterns, six new block types and more, is still in the works.

As of now, Minecraft.net is up and available for use. Notch told us that he's "geting great help from several sources now" and hopes "it will be fixed tomorrow."

UPDATE: A group that wants Notch to put out more updates for the game is claiming responsibility for the DDoS attacks in a 4chan post, according to Kotaku. It's impossible to tell at the moment if these guys are really the ones responsible for these attacks. Note: this group isn't claiming affiliation with 4chan.

This is a really silly attack.

Some article on Kotaku mentioned an attacker publicly addressing this on 4chan as a statement that Notch should bring the new content that was promised or else. Whether that's true or not is a different question, but it's a rather annoying thing to deal with when it's "just" an alpha and only one person working on it.

I'm surprised people who do denial of service attacks still exist. Pity for the guy, but I'm just amazed those type of people are still around.
On a side note, has Giant bomb or any other Whiskey Media site ever been attacked by a DDoS?

Yeah I noticed this yesterday.
Pretty weak...I've still been playing the single player offline just fine though...since that's all I really play anyways.
Still...come on. Attacking Minecraft.net? So pathetic.

So... people wanted Notch to release more updates... and to make that happen they caused problems for the site that he would have to spend time fixing. Time that he otherwise could have used to work on more updates?

So attacking the server and diverting all the staffs attention to deal with it is supposed to make him get work done.  I guess launching one of these attacks doesn't require the smarts I assumed it did.

I don't understand the reasoning behind this, given that n0tch has announced a huge Halloween update.

Kind of sucks tho, seems to still be going on as my server has sat largely empty for the last 24 hours.  Usually there are always at least half a dozen people on.

Thats not okay! Also that should not be okay! What the hell? I mean come on give the indie devs a break here they're trying their best to make this game even more awesome. I don't think its solves anything and you're just pissing off everyone in the process.

Who the fuck, and why the fuck?
Minecraft has no moral problems, takes no stances on any issues, is very popular, and very indie. The only thing I can see any delusional idiots taking issue with is that Markus Persson found... success?

In short, kill 'em.

EDIT: Update issues? Really? And they think killing the network will somehow solve this issue?

4chan didn't do it (this time). Their raids are organized by - sometimes multiple - threads on tthe boards /b/ or (rarely) /v/. There were no such threads before and after the attack, and no threads when Notch posted in his blog. In fact, /v/ had a couple of threads with people pissed off. Most of 4chan actually really likes Minecraft.

If that 4chan update is for real, that's dumb. I doubt it's validity, though - DDoSing a game you like for more updates doesn't seem like a good idea to get what you want.
