Nintendo Confirms New Console for 2012, Details at E3 2011

And so it begins.

While you were asleep, Nintendo confirmed plans to release a brand new console in 2012. The device will make its first public (and playable!) appearance at E3 2011, which kicks off this June 7 in Los Angeles.

The official word comes via a brief note released on Nintendo’s Japanese investors relations Web site. The document is a stiff pairing of paragraphs that, unfortunately for us, reveal nothing more than the fact that Nintendo plans to release a successor to the Wii in 2012.

Nintendo may soon become the first company with a next-generation machine.
Nintendo may soon become the first company with a next-generation machine.
== TEASER ==“Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011,” the statement reads. “We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”

“Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012,” it continues.

The word on the 'net suggests this will be a HD-capable console that might be more powerful than the current console juggernauts, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Other reports allege its tech will be on par, while still others only maintain the device be able to output HD. In other words: it'll be more powerful in some way. How much more? Shrug.

A Kotaku report claims the device's "main" controller is host to dual-analog sticks, a total of eight buttons, a front-facing camera, and a 6.2 (diagonal) touch screen. A source has told CVG since this screen will be able to display HD visuals. Rumors (are you sensing a trend?) stemming from 01net indicate the controller will have a built-in Wii sensor bar as well, which leads us to other rumors the console will continue to support motion control. Next-Gen.biz is reporting, at least, that the device's motion control capabilities will be better than what Sony is offering with Move
Sure, why not?
Sure, why not?
Also, the console is supposedly set to be backwards compatible with Wii and GameCube games because...why not, right? What doesn't this console have? A cappuccino machine?

According to a recent IGN report, apparently Nintendo is thinking about going with “Stream” as its official name. Project Cafe is reportedly the codename.

Maybe it is because I am becoming increasingly jaded as I get older that this Nintendo news does nothing to excite me in any way. Am I alone in the feeling of contentment with the current generation? I get more than what I want/need out of the video game industry with my PC and PS3.  I dislike this news, dislike with an emphatic thumbs DOWN.

Since we all know these companies know the ins and outs of whats going on in with the competitors, wouldn't it be sick to have a new console from all three of the manufacturers?

In any case...

The Wii won when it was WEAKER than the PS3 and 360.  So obviously Nintendo has no reason to worry about future consoles in 1-2 years.

They aren't even in the business of selling games.  They want you to buy their console and then don't care if you sit there and let in lie in dust.  They got your money, end of.

"
I'm not sure if I was bashing; I'm just confused as to what's going on with the News section at Giant Bomb. With Patrick coming on, I thought Nicholson would be less-featured at least (not saying this is a good or bad thing, just a reasonable one). However, Nicholson seems to be as prevalent as ever. Moreover, I thought this story—a new home console from Nintendo—would be something Patrick would write up, as it is HUGE news. In fact, I would not have been surprised if Jeff wrote the article, as something this big a deal doesn't come along very often. I guess I was just succinctly conveying my surprise that Nicholson wrote this, though I suppose there could be a "bashing" undertone in it of "what the hell is going on" or even "Patrick is dropping the ball." But that was not my primary motivation.

Hope that clears up any confusion. Now, your turn: what's a "comparation?"

I'm not trying to take anything away from Nintendo here, they did win handily, but they won by changing the rules of the game and taking power out of the equation for a generation (with motion controls).  Now that differentiator has effectively been nullified.  Nintendo only have 'no reason to worry' if they have another 'motion controls' style game changer in them.

Personally I think (at least as far as Sony and Microsoft are concerned) the next gen is going to be all about who can best sell shit to you in your living room (games, movies, music, tv...).  Nintendo are still likely to be in the business of selling game consoles and making a profit on them, but they will still need something special for that to work.

There new console will be 'significantly better than the PS3 or X360...' It'd better be! It still will be a current gen console. Within two to three years MS and Sony will launch their next machine and Nintendo will again be a step behind. Marketing is Nintendo's strongest asset. I truly hope it will work out for them.

If they are smart they'll make it just powerful enough to output multiplatform games at 1080p, and possibly in 3D, while still keeping the prize low and making it easy to program for (I'm looking at you PS3). I really don't get what all the skeptisism is about. Last gen they opted to not compete with the other Sony and Microsoft, aiming for a different market segment. This was in retrospect clearly the right call. Hovewer because of this the technology powering the console has become obsolete a lot quicker, and thus the hardware cycle had to be shorter. The question is what the hook will be this time? Clearly a marginally more powerful console is not going to cut it alone.

Awesome. Here's a scan I made from an old EGM circa 2005 when the Wii was still called the Revolution. EGM was trying to speculate on what the Revolution controller would look like. I think they're funny.

lol great find. I am sure this was originally done with a tongue-in-cheek tone (at least I hope) but given the (rumored) descriptions of the latest controller, that above image seems like it could become quite real lol

Because... you want Nintendo to fail again?
They can't directly compete with the other two systems anymore, especially given their poor relations with third parties.

Even if they get the same games as 360 and PS3 on the Wii2, why would you buy the Nintendo version of the multiplatform game? Because Wii2 might be more powerful? That doesn't help the PS3. There's no way that Nintendo will be in the lead by being the same as their competitors because that market has already been won by Microsoft.

Coming in this late with something moderately more powerful will not be enough to get the most sales. They need something besides graphics to sway public opinion in their favor... that's a lesson Sony has learned on both the console and handheld fronts this generation.

"
My god, are people still trying say that Nintendo failed?  Nintendo didn't fail at all this round.  The won - over 60% of market share.  MS hasn't won the market at all.  You really need to wake to reality. "
I was referring to the Gamecube... the last time they just made a traditional console that was more powerful than it's direct competition... If they made a NintendoStation 360, they would fail. They need to have some innovation or "gimmick" in order to be successful.

And MS won the "gamer" market, which is what I was referring to. Wii was obviously more successful overall.

I'm glad, the Wii graphics are dated as fuck, i know they say graphics aren't everything but if you can't put a 3rd party release game like Call of duty(the legit one not a crappy Wii version) on your console your doing it wrong. Glad to see Nintendo upping their game.

That would just mean having to buy three essentially identical consoles just to be able to enjoy all of the the exclusives. At least this way, there are two traditional consoles and one that offers a different experience. PS3 and 360 have "normal" covered, there really is no need for a third.

Nintendo seems to be over saturating.  I see another piece of hardware promising "unique gaming experiences" that in the end goes under-supported by third parties and becomes a haven for shovelware.  Which rehashed first party properties will they beat into the ground on this one?  I'm generally a Nintendo fan, but they are making me weary.

Take my attitude with the knowledge that I just bought a 3DS though and kinda feel like a chump.

Wow, i just realized that i only bought a grand total of 1 game in an entire console cycle for the Wii, which was Wii sports.  I hope that the console is at least a good step above the 360 and PS3 and that would mean Microsoft and Sony are going to have to release a new console a few years after.

I might be in the minority here, but I have absolutely ZERO interest in a touch screen on the controller.  I like to look at my TV when playing. If I want a small screen, I'll boot up the iPad!  Plus that will make the controller heavier - I don't even like the weight of the chatpad on the 360 controller!

Well it looks like they will have the best looking console multiplatform games if they can output 1080p. Hopefully it has backwards compatbility which makes the graphics better too. I have some catching up to do, haven't bought a nintendo console since the N64.

I also think it makes alot of sense, the wii was a strategy to make money, ppl complains there aren't enough hardcore games and graphics. Now with the funding, they can go and mop up the current gen powerwise and force them to make new consoles right away.

things I need to see before I would even consider buying this console:

*SIGNIFICANTLY more power than PS3/360 if the price is 350-400 dollars, or 200-250 MAX if only slightly more powerful (and by "slightly" it will still need to be something one can easily differentiate from current gen systems. An example would be 60-Plus frames per second LOCKED with no jaggies or screen tearing whatsoever with improved textures on current-gen series like Assassin's Creed. Again, this output requirement would be the bare minimum of power acceptable, and at a price of no more than $250 dollars. For $350/400, the leap in power would need to be at LEAST equal to the jump from PS2 to PS3.

*Major leaps forward for big franchises Mario, Zelda, Metroid, ect., along the lines of Mario 64, OoT, and Prime. Simply making the exact same games again with pretty graphics won't cut it. I do not even have a suggestion as to what steps need to take to make these tired series fresh again, thats for Miyamoto and company to figure out. What I can say is that after Sunshine and two Galaxies, Mario feels really old. Twilight Princess felt so old and rehashed (and ugly as hell) that it was the first Zelda game I couldn't even finish.

*No more MIDI. Voice work instead of text. Link can still be voiceless, by just grunting/yelling, but other characters need to talk at least.

* No super-gimmicky controller that 3rd parties will not even try to use effectively. Since it looks like this console WILL have another gimmick, at least give a decent alternative. The classic controller on Wii was a good idea, but why the FUCK couldn't I play Punch-Out (Wii version) on it?? Have a traditional controller, and allow the use of it in games that make sense, for christsakes.

Make a couple of Mature games for it Nintendo. No one is asking for blood and guts in Mario, but make a new series with great gameplay mechanics full of great ideas, that isn't full of pastel colors and rainbows. PROVE that gamers want to buy such a game on Nintendo hardware, then maybe companies like Rockstar might support the "Stream". After the DS Chinatown Wars, 3rd parties need some reassurances that a Nintendo platform can support these kind of games.

EDIT:

*Also need a good online structure. Not that I personally care about it (PSN sucks and Live is a non-issue for me, I am going to let my sub lapse as I never use it) But many gamers need this, and publishers need to have this to feel confident in making games for any platform at this point. More publishers+more games=something Nintendo consoles hasn't seen since the SNES.

*Since they are apparently stuffing so much crap on the next controller, I hope there is room for a decent sized D-pad. The Wii D-pad and the entire DS line (including XL and the new 3DS) ALL have D-pads sized for a 5 year old. This really needs to change.

I am excited for this for sure...but for some reason I feel as if this console won't be as revolutionary as we want to think. In other words I'm going into this with skeptical optimism, quite honestly all they need to do for me to line up for hours is release pokemon for it...that's right pokemon on a console (it'll never happen, but one can dream). Here's to hoping it's :

A.More powerful than the xbox360. B.Has a good online experience (dreaming again)
C.has more than one top notch game a year(I'm looking at you Wii)
D.will not be ignored by third parties
 E.Doesn't cost over $350.00
F.Doesn't raise game prices by $10.00

That's my dream list, but I'll take 4 of 6, that'd be fine too. Just don't ignore an audience again and we'll be fine Nintendo.

LoL, Microsoft and Sony's PR departments must be in crisis mode right now. They both have their E3 press conf the day before Nintendo's. Regardless of what Nintendo's new console is (or if it is any good), it is likely to steal the show.

*Note, i said PR departments, since their goal (having their press conf early) is to get the most interest about their products*
