Nintendo Giving Away Excitebike 3D With 3DS eShop Update

Excitebike to be the first in Nintendo's "3D Classics" collection for the store.

CAN YOU FEEL THE 3DIFICATION?
CAN YOU FEEL THE 3DIFICATION?
It's still rather ridiculous Nintendo didn't launch 3DS with their digital marketplace, eShop, built in. That said, the company says a firmware update is on the way--the latest word, from the president himself, is late May--and they're throwing in a bonus for patient users: a 3D version of the original Excitebike

"We need to have consumers voluntarily go online with their Nintendo 3DS," said president Satoru Iwata, as part of outlining Nintendo's financial results for the latest fiscal year. "We are planning to do some promotional activities in order to urge them to do so."

The 3D version of Excitebike is part of a planned line of "3D Classics" for the eShop. The specific wording of the announcement--"certain period of time after the beginning of the system update"--suggests it might not happen as soon as the eShop goes live, but it'll hopefully occur soon after that.

At E3 2010, Nintendo had one 3DS loaded with classic NES games fitted with 3D visuals, including Punch-Out!! and others that have faded from my memory. I do remember they looked pretty rad, as the layered nature of old-school visuals present immediate rad-town benefits when given the 3D treatment.

I know they don't want to start the show with a showstopper, but I'm really just interested in Mario/Kirby/Zelda/Metroid etc.

I think launching with a sub-standard eShop would be far more ridiculous in light of the last service.

I'm glad they have taken their time.

There is a 3D Excitebike visualizer when you play songs on the 3DS. I guess this will look similar.

LATE MAY....

By Nintendo's calendar, they'll surely be ready to hand out Excitebike by September.

I'm still hopeful that this time Nintendo will get the online side of gaming right - if anything it's too big a source of revenue to miss out.

To be honest, if they don't start acting like a next-gen company soon then they have a lot to learn for Wii2.

Holy mackerel, would I happily re-buy every NES classic again just to play them in 3D. My usually-illegal-ROM-downloading ass has no qualms about wasting my money on such an obvious cash-in, but there it is. I am a fool... but I don't care. Take my money Nintendo.

Would rather have Super Mario Bros. for free, but oh well.  I really hope these 3D Classics are cheap.

I have barely played that game, but I would pay money for Mega Man 2 on the 3DS, with or without stupid 3D.

Nice. Still feels like a ways off, but free is great and Excitebike is absolutely a classic.

Sweet so we are getting excitebike, and a broken thing version of Mega Man Legends 3.

I'm sure to some people this sounds completely lame, but this is a cool thing. Now I wonder what kind of video we'll get when they release that update. I wanna see something pixar on that thing.
