Nintendo Reveals Japanese Wii U Price, Launch Details

Which means you should be taking the prices listed with a grain of salt, okay?

No Caption Provided

Just hours ahead of a event in New York, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced key launch details about the Wii U as part of a late-night (for us here in America, anyway) Nintendo Direct event.

The machine will launch in Japan on December 8 for in two forms. A basic set, with 8GB of memory, for 26,250 yen ($337), and a premium, black version with 32GB of memory for 31,500 yen ($405). Those yen-to-dollar conversions aren't indicative of what it will actually cost here, by the way. Expect it to be lower, and possibly with a pack-in.

Remember, Nintendo did not ship the WIi with Wii Sports in Japan.

The deluxe version also includes Nintendo Network Premium, which will provide an unspecific amount of points for purchase, and 10% back (off?) digital purchases. Nintendo Network will be available on every device, obviously.

If you want to buy a separate Wii U Game Pad, it'll cost you 13,440 yen ($172). Yeah, it's expensive, and the machine will only support two Game Pads. Again, that price will change over here. $150 sounds about right.

Several accessories were also announced, including a stand for the Game Pad.

New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand will both be available at launch in digital and retail forms. In Japan, New Super Mario Bros. U will retail for about 6000 yen ($77) and Nintendo Land for about 5000 yen ($64). It's easy to imagine that being $60 and $50 over here, but who knows? Maybe lower?

More details on Wii U launch software is being saved for the other event later today.

Iwata went over some basic specifications inside Wii U, but in typical Nintendo fashion, the company left plenty for people to speculate about. The machine supports outputs up to 1080p, and uses a "GPGPU." (No, I don't know what that means, either.) There's 2GB of memory within the system--1GB system memory, 1GB game memory. Finally, Wii U's game discs can feature up to 25GB.

In just a few hours, we'll know more. Another streaming event from Japan will go over more launch software, and there's the completely separate event in New York, too. Madness!

(Thanks to 8-4 Play's John Ricciardi and NeoGAF member Cheesemeister for play-by-play translation of the event.)

That 1GB system memory BETTER be reduced to allow more game memory.

I don't  care how fast it its or the price, 1GB is LOW. It might be enough for Nintendo games but this is typical Nintendo only thinking of themselves when designing hardware. That damn gamepad is the cuprit of all this, something that is even less impactful for games than the wii remote (at least pointer controls are useful), is harvesting resources from the main hardware to keep it "cheap" (because 250 for this hardware is expensive in my opinion).

A new model PS3 (hopefully for 150) or an Oculus Rift (true next gen hardware) is a much better proposition in my opinion.

Patrick, "GPGPU" stands for General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit. It means they're going to be taking some things that normally the CPU would be doing, and passing them off to something that is effectively a GPU (but with no graphical output) for faster processing. An example of this might be if they used the GPU to calculate particle positions in the world, or to do physics. Those are not Rendering problems, but they can be configured in such a way as to take advantage of the extreme parallelism of modern GPUs.

If they price it over $250, then they're smoking crack.

Summation of Common Misconceptions/Overreactions and their explanations in the comments so far:

1. It's Really expensive --> Japanese Pricing, US is sure to be lower than the mere conversion number

2. 2GB of RAM is so outdated! --> Console RAM =/= PC RAM, Xbox360 has 1/4 of that RAM for example

3. Internal Storage is a joke! --> Do you want to pay for vastly overpriced first party storage? Or go to almost any retail or online outlet and pay 5 bucks for an 8GB flash drive, or pay $50-$100 for.5-1.5TB HDand have all the storage a Nintendo Console will ever need?

This console/marketing strategy still have issues, but let's have patience and see if it falls on it's face over the next few years and not lose your collective $hit b4 it's even released

By "1gb system memory and 1gb game memory," do you mean 1gb RAM and 1gb VRAM?

For 350, they'll have to have some really, really awesome games at launch to sell me on it before a price drop. 250 was more what I was looking to pay. (Not even considering getting the 300 dollar unit, 8GB is just... man. Not like 32 is good, but at least it'll have some room.)

Think with that price or something close to it, it will sell but not as good as the Wii with such a low price on it at launch. Surprised that there's not a pack in game for Japan, seems that with all the small number of launch titles it'd be a great way to show off what Nintendo thinks is the best game, then change it out later.

2GB memory? Fuuuuuck old hardware is old.

Also those prices equate to £209-251. Watch the prices go down to $300-350 in the US and up in the UK to £250-300. We will get shafted as usual!

How exactly 2 GB are "old"? I think you mean low spec or something like that. For example 2GB of DDR3 memory are probably going to perform better than 3GB of DDR memory at the same clock speed.

I was picking out 2GB as an indicator of the relative age of the rest of the hardware in the machine. 2GB memory was standard back when the 360 and PS3 originally came out, and cause of how scarce the actual details are on the rest of the WiiU's system specs I was extrapolating that to the rest of the hardware. Which would put the WiiU on par with an 8 year old PC.

But how much will the "pro" controller cost? That's the only thing I plan on buying from Nintendo this generation.

Definitely saw it live myself but good to see someone screencap it. This press event is better than the E3 showing already.

The "normal" Pro Controller won't be compatible with all games though. Only stuff in which the GamePad features are optional (like most 3rd party multiplatform games).

This is why I'm not picking up a Wii-U. Nintendo's attempt to focus on a non-standard controller with the Wii is what turned me off. There wasn't a single game I played for the Wii that felt good to control at all (except games that didn't require the Wii-mote). And this from the company that practically invented high-quality responsive gamepads.

All I wanted from the Wii's successor was a regular controller again. Sadly, Nintendo is not interested.

I don't get this sentiment at all. The GamePad is a standard controller. It just happens to have a screen in the middle. Are you afraid to look silly because it's so big? It has the exact same inputs as a DualShock3 or 360 pad. Makes zero sense.

The level of ignorance in these comments is absolutely astounding. I've been as skeptical of the Wii U as the next guy, but you people really have a keen hatred of Nintendo. Let's get real here.

1. 2GB RAM is 4x what is in the current gen consoles, and over 20x the memory in the Wii. You can't compare PC RAM with console RAM because the two systems work completely differently. The amount of RAM in the Wii U is far more than current generation consoles.

2. Yeah, the second tablet controller is pricey. Guess what? Almost no games are going to use 2 of those things. Most games will be playable with the Pro controller or Wii remotes. No need to shell out extra cash for the tablet controller unless you are clumsy enough to break it.

3. $300/350 is hardly overpriced for this thing, when you factor in the tablet controller. I mean, we're talking $50 more than current generation consoles! Nintendo is going to be just fine here.

4. Anyone talking about a 8GB/32GB HDD is wrong. The Wii U will use flash memory, not a HDD. Huge difference. For those who want to download a ton of games, you can buy a $50 1TB USB HDD this black friday and you'll have all the storage space you want.

I just bought a Wii and around 20 games for $400 last year. I think I will be doing the same with this one as I have not seen any games that make me go nuts yet. Though that Lego game does look rather cool. Just hope it comes out on other platforms. Once it has 4-5 games I can't get anywhere else, a slight price cut and/or a fall into some money I want to through away I will see about getting it sooner. So far it has done nothing to impress me.

Eh, it's a bit more expensive than I thought...but it looks like a price point that will lure in enough people that are ignorant of what "next gen" should be to make Nintendo rich again.
