Ouya Nabs Games From Airtight, Minority Media

The game from Kim Swift's studio will be an exclusive, as well.

For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.
For non-backers, the Ouya console will cost you $100, but the controller itself isn't cheap--it's a whole $50 on its own.

With just a few weeks until backers receive hardware, Android gaming device Ouya has announced Kim Swift’s Airtight Games will produce an exclusive game for Ouya, and the next game from Papo & Yo developer Minority Media is coming, as well.

There are few details on either game, especially the one from Airtight Games.

“We truly feel that this platform will give us the freedom to fully realize the funky, unique game we have in mind,” said Swift in the announcement. “Though the title will definitely appeal to core gamers in terms of skill and difficulty, it really has a completely unexpected, imaginative slant that’s totally at home on this console.”

Minority Media’s game is described as an “adventure puzzler,” and is scheduled for this fall. The term “exclusive” wasn’t branded to Minority Media’s project, which I tried to clarity with the developer.

"We are super excited but there won't be any info on the game for a while,” said the company.

That doesn’t tell us much, but if it truly was exclusive, Minority Media would have said as much.

We’ve nearly reached critical mass of Android-based gaming devices raising money on crowdfunding services, but Ouya was one of the first and easily the biggest, which also means it’s becoming a reality much sooner. To aid in drumming up developer support, Ouya has enlisted former thatgamecompany co-founder and president Kellee Santiago as head of developer relations.

“I'm looking forward to continuing my work in tilting the industry scales towards indie developers and more variety in game content,” she said on Twitter.

Santiago also said her new position would not remove her from game development

Ouya hardware will begin shipping to backers on March 28, and arrives for general populous in June.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of the Ouya? Is it because you really want to play android games on a HD television or is it the potential the device has for people to create games for it? I'm not really interested in the device because I don't really like phone games (some are good, but most are too shallow for me). Plus I really hate the way micro-transactions are handled now and the Ouya seems to be a platform that will have its fair share of those types of games.

Yeah, the appeal generally is the fact that it is an open but standardized platform, that'll be easy to develop for, like other Android platforms, but games will have the possibility to be deeper than your regular smartphone games, since games developed for the Ouya can be made with the assumption that the player will have access to an actual gamepad, with buttons and sticks, and not just a touch device. We can't say for sure it'll turn out great, there's certainly a risk that we'll just get ports of your typical phone games with some shoddy controller support and lots and lots of microtransactions, but there's a chance that we'll get to see some really interesting stuff on it. And emulators, lots of emulators.

Not everyone wants to spend $200+ then $60 per game on an xbox/ps3, especially not parents buying for pre-teen children. The Ouya strikes a balance of cost and game affinity for the market of non-hardcore gamers. If they get the interface right this could be perfect for younger gamers.

Stuff marketed to the adult audience is likely to fall flat but if it's fun and easy it'll sell. If they stick emulators on it it'll sell even better.

150 for bunk games, aight. I'll see you on ebay in a few years.

For correction, the article makes a minor mistake that I see at most places, and makes a statement that I find kind of strange. The 100$ for the console comes with a controller; you don't need to pay extra to have one. 50$ for a controller isn't out of the norm; a brand new 360 controller from MS or a brand new Dualshock from Sony is 50~60$, and a brand new Wiimote is 40~50$. Sure third party ones can be cheaper, but we're talking about a market that had time to grow, there; back at these systems' launch you didn't have those kinds of options.

So, why is 50$ for extra Ouya controllers all that bizarre?

Nah, I got your point. I just didn't want to get into that. While I've been interested in what's been announced so far, opinions on game quality is just that; opinion.

Any platform has good and bad games. At least the Ouya has the benefit of being a smaller investment upfront (and enforced "demo"/F2P), as opposed to getting, let's just say, a Vita just to find that it has no games...!

At the same time, though, an Ouya is basically a Roku that is also an Android game console. For the same price. If someone was at all interested in getting a media streamer, I'd at least suggest looking at the Ouya.

Obviously this is anecdotal but: I have no idea who is interested in this. I have no idea who has even heard of this outside of interest sites like GB, or that one post I saw on reddit.

We are already talking about the market shrinking to the point that one major console maker might be forced out after this generation. The Wii was a casual console and it wasn't great, but it came from Nintendo and that brought name recognition.

Who the hell is going to buy this, its like a grandma trap. "Thaaaaaaaaaaaaanks.......grandma"

People being so dismissive of this console need to open up their minds to new possibilities a little more. This console could mean big things for small dev teams. Being able to own a weird console for $100 is fantastic in my opinion. I'm honestly more interested in the outcome of this console than the known quantities of the next systems. It may be a piece of shit, but at least someone is trying to do something new and weird, right?

I think I agree with you. Last year was all about small games taking the spotlight away from the big developers and publishers so maybe its time for a console maker to do the same thing.

Its not going to offer the same experiences as the PS4 or whatever Microsofts box is going to be called but I don't think it is really competing in the same market as those two. If there a base of people buying games (and I think crowdscorcing it is important in getting this base) then devs might come up with some interesting stuff.

I think maybe its in relation to the console itself. If you pay $100 for a console it is quite surprising that the controller is half that price. But I agree the way he phrased it could have been better.

There's been videos of games running on it all over the Ouya forums. The first one I saw was pretty much what you expected to be: Someone porting Doom.

@patrickklepek Hey, Patrick! Can you clarify whether the $100 console includes a controller?
