Pre-Load Cash Into Your Steam Account With The Steam Wallet

I see Steam pre-paid cards in the future.

Chances are you didn't see the newest feature of Steam, the Steam Wallet, coming, but it's available now if you'd like to use it. The feature, which is in beta, allows you to pre-load cash into your account, much like how you can drop credits into your Xbox Live Marketplace or PSN "wallets." The weird thing about Steam Wallet is that it's pointless. As of now, you can still give Valve exact change for games. There's no need to funnel your funds into it.

But how much money can you drop into your account? According to the Steam Wallet page, you can pre-load $5, $25, $50, or even up to $100 dollars into Steam. The money can then, of course, be used to purchase any game or within a game that supports Steam transactions.

No Caption Provided

It's not hard to reason out why the Steam Wallet might exist. Younger users without access to credit or bank cards need a way to purchase content, and if stores were to offer Steam Wallet cards with these increments in the future? Well, that'd take care of the problem, wouldn't it? Also, a pre-piad card would finally make brick and mortar Steam gifting a reality. But just to be clear, though: as of right now, Steam Wallet cards do not exist and no plans have been announced.

Bi-polar much?  Brad Nicholson is bar none the worst addition to the GB staff in its history.  I swear, every one of his stories is a gibbering stream of nonsense.  He couldn't write a coherent news story to save his life.

That's not a very good way to be managing your money. You're better off just leaving it in your bank account and budgeting it towards future game purchases than allowing steam to make money on your money.

Still this feature doesn't really bug me as long as they continue to allow you to pay the exact cost of a game.

I would say he meant in its current form is pointless, Obviously it has some point he is just saying that it is not yet apparent and then goes on to speculate.

Let's not beat around the bush: this is for kids. That's the only real reason I could think of why this feature exists.

very true...I'm not the best money manager but I alway have points loaded up on my xbox in case something surpassing comes out or i feel the need to by a new movie, i would like to do the same thing with steam. Although come to think of it steam has large game for like 30 and up and i probably won't have that much in my wallet, so i think i just talked myself out of using this feature. But really the ultimate solution is get a job....

You kids can have your Steam wallet. I'll stick to the old way of using my credit card and then being surprised my credit card bill is really high.

There's no point in this other than to gift people things or to set a budget for your children.

Or the other way. Using your credit card and having it fail, with some cryptic error. Only to call your credit card company and find out that they denied it, because it raised flags over fraud concerns. So you spend ten minutes on the phone with them, verifying all sorts of data just so they can authorize your card with that vendor again, so you can go back to Steam and go through the transaction again . . . and then have the whole thing happen again the next week when you buy more Steam games.

I don't know why, but this happens with Steam more than ANY other place. Despite the fact that their analytical software should recognize the pattern of my purchases and see that I've spent about $1,500 on Steam in the last eighteen months.

I've spent far too much time trying to figure out if this was a serious statement or not.

Interesting. If they start selling pre-paid cards, I could finally bother setting up a US account. I have been reluctant do so in the past due to the potential safety-risk with routing through a proxy. With pre-paid cards I wouldn't need to send my credit card info through the proxy.

Or, you know, they could stop the €1=1$ nonsense.

Beta stage?  Does that mean that your money can "accidentally" be lost?  Whoops!  Losing that $100 was a bug!  Not representative of the final product!  Please come again!

Well if they were to make pre-paid cards then how will it be handled for people like me living in Australia? As of right now the currency for games on Steam are still in US dollars so unless they release an update that localizes prices for whatever country your in then I can only see these pre-paid cards being released in the US.

Here in Germany Steam crap costs twice as much, as the copy from amazon... It's already insulting. I won't give them a single cent. ^_^

Yeah, seems like it'd be a sensible move, especially with the popularity of cards for browser-based games like Farmville and services like LIVE.

Yo dawg I heard you like to pre-load your cash, so we put a pre-load cash function in your pre-load cache manager so you can pre-load your cash while you pre-load your cache.

This would be good for younger users but then you need to have child and parent accounts and parental controls. Feels like Steam is going mass market.

This makes some things easier. The  range of present options to our little gamers is getting bigger. I'm going to give my cousin a paysafecard to use with Steam. (Just like an adult)
I like both services of paysafe and steam.
