Prince of Persia Continues With Epilogue DLC

Ubisoft has dropped some hard info on the downloadable add-on for the latest Prince, coming in late February.

No Caption Provided
Ubisoft has been making some vague rumblings about forthcoming downloadable content for the latest Prince of Persia revival, and today they released some actual details on what's going to be in there, as well as the name: Prince of Persia: Epilogue. Catchy!

Hopefully I can talk around the actual ending of the game here without giving anything away, but it certainly ends in such a way that you expect some kind of direct continuation of the storyline. There's even an achievement that pops when you beat the game called "To be continued...?" So it's nice to see this add-on will hopefully wrap up the story that was left unfinished there.

Here's the official Ubi line on what's being added.

  • New Region: The Underground Palace – A corrupted underground palace from which the Prince and Elika need to escape in a new epic journey.
  • New Power: Energize – Reconstruct destroyed areas of the environment to create a path and rush through it before it vanishes.
  • New high pace: The new trap challenge – The Prince and Elika will face more cunning foes, cleverer traps and level design, adding more to the difficulty level in over 3 hours of gameplay.
  • New Attack: Sprinting Clash – A duel move that lets you or the enemy trigger a sprint attack, charging towards each other, clashing your weapons fiercely.
  • New Unlockable Skins: Finish the game and unlock exclusively, from the early development of the game, the Prototype characters of the Prince and Elika.

IGN has an interview on this DLC that fills in some more details, including these quotes about the difficulty of the expansion--noteworthy since the original game was criticized for being too easy--and about the new enemy you'll face.

Expect everything to be at a higher pace and to keep you on the edge of your seat. Figuring out how to succeed passing this long acrobatic sequence mined with traps or how to defeat this boss before he regenerates his energy will definitely be more intense. What hardcore Prince of Persia gamers want is a challenge and some of them found the game too easy. We understand this. Seeing such feedback, our vision and intentions with the DLC coincided with their comments quite well. We wanted to build a challenge and experience even greater with all the tools at our disposal, and let me say that there are a lot: Elika's power, traps, combat system, etc...

The Shapeshifter is an enemy that takes the form of two of Ahriman's most fearsome Lieutenants, the Warrior and the Hunter. Though their physical form is familiar to our heroes and the player, it will requires a particular strategy to defeat the Shapeshifter, rewarding the player that takes advantage of the new sprint feature exclusive to the Epilogue.

That doesn't sound much like a new enemy so much as a repurposing of two old ones. Here's three new screenshots where you can see this guy. You also get a good view of the new area, and what's that fiery sword all about?

Epilogue will be out on February 26 for "consoles," which it's safe to assume means both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. How about price? No official word, but I'd peg this one at $10. What do you think? Are you onboard for more Prince?

I dislike this seemingly current trend of making players pay to finish a game.

Blah. Haven't even finished the main storyline yet. Not sure if I'm up for more of that stuff and things.

The way the game ended setup for a sequel, but definitely had closure.

I'm all for being a consumerist asshole, but the ending to Prince of Persia was fine. This DLC doesn't even sound like it's going to really advance the story. As far as the story goes, I think it will poo poo on the ending if they are somehow okay after and just go back to kick more ass or something.

As long as it includes an interesting bit of story, it sounds like it could be okay. I haven't played this gen (or even last gen)'s PoP yet, but it sounds like the biggest draw to that game I would have is story-wise, since the gameplay itself sounds like a cakewalk.

Definitely in for this one. I really enjoyed the game and I will happily pay reasonable price for another 3 hours of content.

At least the title of this DLC makes it clear where this fits in with the main game.

Meh. I loved Pop except the ending. I didn't hate it because it was sad but rather because it made the game pointless.

Under 10$ or bust. I hate how DLC has randomly become a 15-20$ standard.
Ranting aside, great game -- will be nice to get more out of it.

I don't think you truly appreciated the ending then. I thought the bit with the trees was one of the best uses of the medium in a long time.

I don't think that Kinjiro played all the way to the end, because the end is not sad. Keep playing and you will see the real ending. Oh, Pass on the DLC.

Prince of Persia would definitely not be my first choice for DLC content but I'll take it. But, please Ubisoft, no light seeds.

Im on board for more PoP but I think the price will be $15 since its over 3h of content or whatever. Im not saying its worth that but i suspect that the people at Ubi do.

I thought the structure and pacing of the ending was brilliant. It forced conflicting motivations on the player and left them in silence as they went about their lonely task. Then as you walked away, with the consequences of your actions materializing behind you, your character looked confident and at ease. The concluding scene was poignant and a respectable setup for the sequel.
I welcome the epilogue DLC but I'm concerned it will dilute the original ending. I would be surprised if this DLC effects the setup for the sequel. So I'm guessing whatever story is added will be of little consequence. The most interesting thing for me will be seeing how Ubisoft has responded to the criticisms they received about the original game.

I'm really interested in the extra story. The game has somewhat of a cliffhanger ending and I was suspecting the sequel to continue from it. But DLC is the better choice because we'll get it faster. This will be a must buy for me.

So is this what it's come to? I remember people making jokes about buying the endings to games as DLC as the sort of thing that would never happen.

Enjoyed the game but I don't think I'll pick it up because I find this rediculous that this ending wasn't originally with the game and I don't think the content is worth anything over $10.

I really enjoyed the game, but I'm starting to get tired of DLC.  I already beat the game, I don't want to pay $10 and come back to it 2-3 months later just to feel like I'm getting the full story.  Put it in the game or put it in the sequel.

If this isn't forced, desperate DLC I'm not sure what is.  I'd much rather see them focus on the sequel than pay any money for what is described above.

I'm split. on one hand I'm happy that that they are giving a little more ending to...well...the ending, but i also feel like this should have been a part of it already. i wouldn't say that the ending was pointless, from a accomplishment standpoint it was, but i felt it could of used just a little more finality.

Hell yeah, that sounds awesome! The new stuff they added sounds cool, but the coolest part is having to rush through an area to revive it. I want to see how they can make the game more difficult considering the Elika system, very intrigued...

They they want ~10EUR for it, it will probably get it. Let's just hope that the story-part at least somehow progresses the story. The original ending was quite disappointing.

It really amazes me how many people are complaining that this is a ripoff when they don't even know how it will pan out. And the game did have a proper ending, albeit one that left room for a sequel. Would you call Halo 3 a ripoff because it continues the story where 2 left off? I seriously doubt so. And while I had hoped for a happier ending to Prince of Persia, it was an actual ending. This DLC Ubisoft is working on is just extra content, with even the title of the DLC stating that it is an epilogue, something which comes AFTER the end of something.

Seriously, those of you complaining about this DLC need to get a grip and learn to be satisfied for once.

What I really want is more of The Prince (of Drake) and Elika playing Eye Spy. Can I get that as DLC?
