PS3 Price Drops Tomorrow, Slim Redesign Coming Soon

Well, it looks like the retailers listing a Slim PS3 were right. Sony has announced that redesigned, 33-percent-smaller PlayStation 3 hardware will be available worldwide by September 1. It will come with a 120GB hard drive and will run for $299 in the US. That'll translate to 299 Euros and 29,980 yen in other regions.

Prices on the existing PlayStation 3 hardware will drop tomorrow.

Other announcements revealed by Sony in Germany this morning include a digital comics reader for the PSP (with Marvel Comics supporting the service), and smaller downloadable games for the PSPgo launch called "PSP minis." I think Sony really needed this, since they were in last place, its a gamble they have taken. I think Microsoft execs have been pretty smart about messaging that Natal will be like a new console launch, and I would think Microsoft will release their redesign then.  
I bet sony wanted to do that too (launch the redesign with their motion controller), but that might have been too late for them, since they are really hurting.

That's not what I'm trying to say. I just mean that if you would rather go without playing any of the new games, than have to buy a new box that can't play old games, then obviously you don't care that much about the games that can only be played on the new box anyway.
 
If you've ever bought a Nintendo home console, you know that until the Wii, none of them had BC, but you bought them because you wanted to play new games.

Microsoft still hasn't convinced me that the 360's FIRST console design has the kinks worked out of it. Maybe a redesign is what they really need to get the RRoDs gone once and for all. 

As for the PS3 Slim... I want a PS3, but my PS2 is dying and I have a ton of games for it that I still want to play. I'd really like to replace it with a nice, shiny new B/C PS3...  I made a pledge last week that if Sony announced a PS3 for $299 that was B/C, I'd preorder it on the spot... It's really the only thing stopping me at this point. Oh well. Maybe they will release some later update, but until they do, my 360 will suffice...

There's been rumours about it for a while, chances are, they're going to hold off and release it as a sort of "new" console along with Natal next year.
But now that Sony have announced their big plans, we'll have to wait and see what MS do tomorrow.

The PS3 is expensive, FACT (yeah, and I mean STILL expensive too). I really, really wanted a PS3 myself, but the Xbox 360 had more games at the time of purchase. Plus, it was ALOT cheaper as well, so I got that instead. simple... 
 
I'm a gamer, I'm also smart with my money. 
 
And to further make my point. Why is the second hand market so profitable? 
 
BECAUSE IT'S CHEAPER! 
People will allway's try to save money, and purchasing a PS3 is NOT exactly a smart way to do that.

A price drop is welcomed in my circle, so this is all good news.  Still no b/c, but maybe someday that will be fixed via a software download.  I heard Sony patented a way to emulate the PS2 on PS3 hardware a while ago.

Im going to wait to pass judgement on the new look until I get my hands on some more pictures. Matte works on some things. I love the matte finish on the DSi. One thing is for certian though, I will have a PS3 sometime this year.

Actually, in scifi naval terminology, BC stands for battlecruiser. 
 
Playstation 3s need more battlecruisers.

I'm sorry if you don't feel that backwards compatibility is important but it is to me so don't tell people to "stop bitching about it". 
 
I'm happy for sony and I hope this helps them out in the long run but it's a pain in the ass to hook up my ps2 when I want to go back and play a ps2 game. I only have so much space to hook up old consoles. If other systems weren't backwards compatible I wouldn't even bother with thinking about it but that isn't the case so there is little excuse for the ps3 not to be.

They're doing it to make more money because they know they can get away with it. Is it that hard to figure out? Every company does it.
 
And if it bothers you that much, just import one from the states. Even with shipping you'll probably save money, and PS3s aren't region-locked.

 lot of people hating a lot on the design.  Looks nice to me.  Very simplistic.  Much prettier than the current model.  I give the designers an A+....yea!  Now I want one but I already have a 60GB backward compatible PS3...humm what to do what to do.

And I am a graphic designer and look at industrial design work all the time (they are upstairs to where I am).  So my opinion is more valid than yours...har har.  Plus apparently this PS3 version is more environmental friendly from what I read which is talked about a lot these days.
