Red Box Finally Does Something Netflix Doesn't, Launches Game Rental Service

Hey guys, remember renting video games? Now you can do that again, I guess.

Netflix has been staunch in its belief that getting into the game rental business is something simply not worth the company's investments. After all, when you're spending $100 million on Mad Men streaming rights, I guess it's just not worth it to invest in a new infrastructure that could potentially be another huge source of revenue and likely send GameFly, with its perpetually sluggish mailing times, running screaming for the hills.

Don't tell that to Red Box, though, as they've just entered that supposedly irrelevant world of "video games" with a new rental service. Yes, that other movie rental automaton with the big red logo--this being the one with all the supermarket kiosks, mind you--plans to finally break away from its long-standing policy of just doing whatever Netflix already does--albeit years after the fact and less conveniently--and officially launch its brand-new game rental service at 21,000 Red Box locations starting tomorrow. Rentals will go for $2 a pop, and those with the Red Box iOS app can use it to reserve games ahead of time. Some of the games you'll be able to rent as of tomorrow include:

Do I want Mortal Kombat? Or Duke Nukem Forever? Mom! What does
Do I want Mortal Kombat? Or Duke Nukem Forever? Mom! What does "fellatio" mean?!?

It's interesting that the Xbox 360 version of LA Noire isn't on the list, though that might specifically have to do with that version of the game's multi-disc packaging. Might be tough for one of those kiosks to spit out four discs in one package.

At this point, I can safely say I know exactly no one with a GameFly subscription, though I know plenty of people who rely on demos to help them make purchasing decisions. Given Red Box's relative convenience, I must ask, is this something you'd find yourself using on the regular when it came to checking out new games you might be on the fence about?

Granted, this really only applies for the next couple of weeks, until a sweaty, red-faced Netflix executive angrily announces that they've spent $100 billion for the exclusive distribution rights to video games. Like, all of them. Because that'll show those kiosk-loving interlopers what's what.

Given that I can finish a modern "cinematic style" game easily in a day or two, Yes. This is great news. I'll be renting man more games now.

I'd still rather buy it used for 10$
None of those games are $10 used...

They've already been doing this, at least where I live they have. As much as I like Redbox I prefer Gamefly and Netflix as I don't have to leave my house to get a movie or game.

This went live at my Kroger today. I guess it makes sense, but $2 a day is a bit steep if you want to keep it for a few days.

And as usual, Giantbomb proves that they are MONTHS behind on current news. Redbox has been carrying video games for well over 5 months now. Way to be on top of things GB.

Umm, I don't think it goes nation wide until tomorrow. I have seen several redbox kiosks near me that have game rentals, but also some that do not have them.

I'll confirm that at least where I'm at (SLC, UT) that the RedBox kiosks were only recently updated to have games in them.

Living in Mexico and not having a lot of the streaming media here it's actually pretty common to see blockbusters open so it's a service I have pretty easy access to, I find it kind of interesting how the fact that Netflix has made video rentals pretty much obsolete has limited the american market from videogame rentals.

I also wonder if eventually we'll get to rent the games on the online stores like PSN and XBLA, sure there are demos and if you're a PS+ subscriber you get access to full game trials, but straight up rentals and at what price range would they have to be to appeal to the market.

I'd love for Netflix to do games. I tried Gamefly but they were extremely slow and majority of the month was waiting to receive my games. Not worth the money.

I only considered games like Black Ops to be of rental value to me... but refused to spit out the 8 dollars needed to do so...
I think this is a great alternative!

I was going to say that this has been out for almost a year now, but I forgot that there's still quite a few areas that haven't received this.

Well, I always thought Netflix should have bought Gamefly, they're kissing cousins if not siblings but oh the stubborn. Guess now Netflix could only continue their big pushi into the streaming model by maybe buying Onlive instead.

Not only will I make use of this new service, I already have. I was at work when I read the news that they were rolling this whole thing out and I immediately reserved a copy of Duke Nukem Forever using my iPhone. A couple of hours later I was sitting in front of my television playing it.

It is a pretty convenient service, and it's great that I can return a game when I know I won't have the time to play it for a couple of days, and then come back and rent it later and finish it up. I always hated renting from places like Blockbuster and being able to involve myself in the product for a mere fraction of the time that I would have with the game.

Redbox offers a sort of flexibility that rental stores can't much, and a kind of instant treatment that Gamefly can only dream of. I can't wait to use this service more in the future.

@GozerTC: I live in Washington and it feels like the service has been around for months here as well. Having said that I've already had to swear off RedBox because i never remember to take anything back.

I guess Western Washington was also a part of the test game rentals because I have been renting games from redbox for a while now.. Was able to play me some dirt3, homefront, MK, and many others on launch day. Great way of playing games without paying a monthly fee alongside netflix.

After being called out on my last response to this (even by Alex), let me apologize for my previous statement. I simply figured that if the butt crack of Tennessee had this going over 5 months ago,  that it was nationwide.  I even remember reading articles online a couple months prior to the roll out of the red box game rentals a month or two before we saw them here.

Redbox is behind the times to Blockbuster carries all the latest game rentals and most of there new releases weather it me movies or games they get 28 days before Redbox and Netflix does! They have some movies available for only $0.99 a day and there Total Access plans are better then the rest. You can either rent one disc at a time for $9.99/mo which this includes movies, games, blu-rays, and DVD's. Blu-rays do not cost anything extra and being a DISH employee I can tell you new DISH customers can now get 3 months free of Blockbuster by mail rentals. Check this link out http://bit.ly/kzed79.
