Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

No Caption Provided

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

I got into GB a year after Ryan passed, but I've done my best to make up the time by watching the archives. I wish I was here sooner, but I'm glad Ryan is immortalized by this amazing site and community. RIP Ryan Davis and long live Giant Bomb <>

Can't believe it's already been a decade, where does the time go? I lost my mother on June 7th, my grandfather on June 10th, and now I'm sitting here thinking about Ryan. It's becoming clear to me how important what lessons we leave behind, and the legacy we leave to those who really knew us.

I didn't know Ryan personally, but I enjoy the content that he brought to life multiple times a year in reminiscence. Giant Bomb was such a huge part of my life and daily routine from the ages of 15-25, I'll never forget when I first heard the news of his passing. He was so boisterous and gleeful in his interests and passions, and I don't think I'll ever forget that mischievous laugh of his. I often think of what his thoughts would be of the state of gaming or the world at large nowadays. I think I'll go watch some old Ryan content now.

Rest in power, big guy.

I truly wonder what would he be doing these days, with everything that changed not only in this site, but in the world as well. He would probably be making me smile with his content, whatever it may be.

RIP Ryan Davis, you are greatly missed.

It's kinda shocking that it's been 10 years.

I remember seeing the news about this. I was sitting in my car just about to drive home from work so I checked Twitter and saw one of the ex-Harmonix people post something about Ryan passing. Given the escalating weird jokes going on between those people and GB at the time, I thought it was some kind of joke. Then when I got home and read more I realized it was real. That was rough.

I've been listening to old Bombcasts and it's really reinforcing my view that Ryan was one of the best podcast hosts around. He was incredibly funny without being mean spirited and managed to make even dull topics interesting and fun. I've listened to tons of different podcasts in the last decade but none of them have matched Ryan's era of the Bombcast.

A whole decade since then really does feel strange. A lot has changed both here and in my own life during this time. It really would be an absolute delight to be able to listen to him still and hear whatever he'd have to say of the world today

I received an email from Ryan regarding my membership not long before he died. Not knowing what was coming, I deleted it - and I really wish that I hadn't.

It didn't contain anything profound. Something like, "Your membership will renew on [blah-blah...]". But still.

Remain in peace, Ryan.

I started relistening to the memorial episode which I've been dreading but realize now that was a reflection of how I felt at the time. The podcast itself is actually a really upbeat, celebration of Ryan's life. As an extension, it's the best oral history of Giant Bomb they've ever done since GB was really just another part of their friendship. I recommend checking it out if you haven't heard it before. It was really cool they did this and shared it with the community: Pretty nuts it meant they didn't miss a Bombcast as a result during maybe the most challenging moment of their lives up to that point. But, like I said, it's a fun listen. I'm going to miss hearing Ryan's voice on Bombcast (again) as I continue my 2013 revisit.

Crazy to think that this was 10 years ago. I got to meet him a couple times at PAX East. Every time he treated me like there was nothing he rather be doing than talking me. Also he gave the best hugs.

RIP duder. ❤️

I can't provide a more heartfelt or eloquent message than anything that's already here so I'll just say: Rest in Peace, Ryan, you were one of the greats. o7

@manburger: Just thought that 2023 would be a good year to bring back both TANG and Wonderful Universe of TANG for a limited run. With LOU on HBO and Mario. Then there is Makoto Shinkai's newest that is more of video game movie than those 2 combined.

I don't make it around here as often as I did "back in the day" (kids will do that!), but I can't believe it's been 10 years. RIP Ryan!
