Sony Shutters Liverpool Studio, AKA Psygnosis

After nearly 30 years in business under various names, the studio behind the WipeOut series is no more.

The final image tweeted out from the official WipeOut Twitter account.
The final image tweeted out from the official WipeOut Twitter account.

Very few companies in the video game industry can proclaim to have a history that stretches all the way back to the seminal years of the industry we now hold so very dear. Sony Liverpool, once known as Psygnosis, was such a company. Until today.

Sony has announced that it will be shuttering the Liverpool studio, as part of a restructuring of its UK properties. The console maker's Liverpool offices will remain open, but the studio, which had in recent years been responsible for the WipeOut franchise, as well as Formula One racing titles, is finished.

Sony released the following statement on the closure.

As part of SCE Worldwide Studios, we do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place. As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current and planned projects for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to our European Studios.

It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments.

This should not take anything away from the great work WWS are doing and the incredible games and services that we have made, and continue to make, both for this coming year and further in the future.

Originally founded in 1984 by Ian Hetherington and David Lawson, Psygnosis actually began as more of a publisher than developer, bringing out such heralded Amiga titles as Shadow of the Beast, and the original Lemmings games.

The company had been known as Sony Liverpool since 2001, but the developer had been under Sony's banner since the mid-'90s, where it developed properties for the original PlayStation, including G-Police, Colony Wars, and of course, WipeOut, which became the studio's most recognizable franchise.

Psygnosis also had an amusing run of peculiar licensed games under its belt, including SNES/Genesis/Sega CD titles based on '90s horror films Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as a PlayStation game loosely based on the Spice Girls cinematic tour de force Spice World.

The studio's final project was WipeOut 2048 for the PlayStation Vita.

Maybe these guys can run a Shadow of the Beast Kickstarter now. I would totally pay in for that.

Didn't really start playing their games until PS1 days, but holy cow did I play a lot of them then. Loved the Wipeout series and also the Destruction Derby series. Was also a big fan of the Colony Wars games, man I had a stupid collection in the PS1 days.

Anyone else enough of a nut to buy 2x PS1 and have them side by side for system link? I also had 2x copies of about 10 different games that were system link capable like Doom so my friends could come over and play without having to bring anything. Ah the joys of high school and no responsibilities.

Wipeout for the Vita wasn't a bad game. I think Sony closed them because it sold poorly, and that's not the studios' fault, but Vita's. If that piece of...tehnology doesnt sell for shit, how can you expect to move any games?

Sad to see another studio go. Especially one with such a long history. I remember playing Shadow of the Beast and Lemmings on my Amiga 500 in college. Both top notch games.

I'm pretty sure those guys were also behind Blue Ice about 18 years ago. Absolutely the most bat-shit insane game I have ever played.

When the guys behind Amalur and Prototype folded, I couldn't have given two shits (no disrespect intended), but the name Psygnosis really means something to me and my inner child. Sad, sad times.

Rollcage and Destruction Derby were probably two of my favourite racing games ever, along with Carmaggedon. Especially the firstly mentioned has almost too many awesome split-screen related memories attached to it.

Dude... what?

WipEout gone? Say it ain't so. I guess we might see a bastard child developed by another team.

Also, long live G-Police. That game continues to inspire me.

Anyone know for sure whether the entire staff was laid off? Seems like they're going to keep using the facilities, so maybe staff will just be moved around? Hopefully this won't be the end of WipeOut.

Oh God, the Lemmings studio doesn't exist anymore? That was one of those games when I was a kid where I was absolutely atrocious at it but enjoyed playing so much I didn't mind. That's a rare quality. Gonna poor one out for my dumb-as-hammers green haired buddies.

they got rid of the development side of things all that remains is other Sony world wide studio departments related to other SCEE stuff like PR etc so the facilities will reamain open just no games being made there anymore, as for Wipeout unless Sony give it to another dev studio it's dead.

G-Police, Colony Wars, and, well, a lot of Psygnosis' PS1 stuff was just crazy impressive technologically. And, well, Wipeout pretty much defined that console as more grown up and cooler. Definitely a shame to see this studio go. Just imagine how freaking great a new G-Police could have looked and played.

@Terranova: I was afraid that might be the case. Fingers crossed they hand WipeOut over to another talented team. Can Sony even cal their next console a "Playstation" if there's not a WipeOut game being developed for it?!

You'd think with how heavily Sony seems to have leaned on the Wipeout franchise lately to appease everyone (giveaway after the hacking, launch titles for everything the ever release) they would not shut down the studio just to restructure. I'd rather they just have it be a part of the restructuring but still be, you know, a thing.

Here's to hoping that everyone involved will be a part of the "restructuring" and this is just some kind of Sony rebranding and consolidation of studios that is just a slight move an not a massive change that leaves half of everyone sitting on a doorstop somewhere.

Fuuuuuck, there goes one of my all-time favorite developers.

WipeOut alone is a huge loss to me, but a lot of their older releases are classics of the medium.

Huge, huge bummer.

You think they sold one of their oldest (might be the oldest) first party studio, because one of their games might have sold poorly on a platform with a very small install base? I assume they closed them because the laste Wipeout games never really sold blockbusters, and after Wipeout HD they might have had trouble justifying a $60 game, considering how much was in HD.

That's how many closures this year?

Console gaming is falling apart at the seams. I can't say I'm surprised, or even very saddened in general, but I've always heard good things about the Wipeout games.

This is a huge bummer. Just the other day I reread 'The Story of the 12 Tribes of Lemming Island'. Don't get me wrong...it's not a great book. Not even good, by most standards, but it brought back so many Lemming memories. Not to mention the swooping Owl on the back of the book. It reminded me how good of a game Rollcage was. Seriously, one of my favorite racing games of all time. Having said that, I was also reminded of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I was just a little kid, Psygnosis! Was it really necessary to make the first level boss so unreasonably hard? Fuck Shadow Dracula. But you toughened me up and made me a man. You and Capcom. Mom and Dad.

Gaming is over. Generations of continuity from the Amiga gone in an instant.

I know it ceased being Psygnosis long ago and the original members are long departed, but damn.

I guess the saddest part is how I'm not even sure there's anything left TO reassemble under the Psygnosis name (whoever owns it now) and revive whatever old IP isn't owned by Sony.

Damn...

Aww man, this is one I've been expecting for years, but it stills feels awful to hear. WipEout is one of my favorite videogame series, and the design ethics associated with it have formulated my style in graphical design. I hope some employees team up to make a spiritual successor.

wipeout HD is probably one of my most played games of all time - and WO3 one of my favourite games, I always felt their work along with the Designers Republic on that game helped define the style so well for the following games. hope the team there can find new work easily.

wasn't evolution studios merged with studio Liverpool? Please let it be that Evolution studio is still around and that maybe they can carry out the wipeout games. The motorstorm games were fun and underrated in my opinion
