Square Enix Reports Server Intrusion, Nothing Compromised

If you’re part of the Square Enix Members club, check your email. Over the weekend, the company reported a “limited server intrusion” on December 12, and has temporarily shut it down.

This has only affected North America and Japan, not Europe.

Square Enix claims no personal information has been “accessed” in the server intrusion, but the server did contain email addresses, names, addresses and phone numbers of its 1.8 million registered users.

The company also said both user login information and credit card details are not stored on the server that suffered the intrusion.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the Square Enix Members service,” said the company. “We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time as we finalize our investigation in the next few days.”

This is not the first time Square Enix has been hit with a similar problem. In May, the Eidos Montreal website was compromised, which affected 350 resumes and 25,000 email addresses.

Its good that nothing was compromised.

Before the Sony intrusion, I wonder how often companies would get hacked and just not notify the general public. It seems that this is happening almost every day now.

At least companies are starting to shut down sites that have been compromised and admitting to them being compromised.

While server intrusions are part of life now, it does bring into question companies gathering as much information as they do with all these little clubs and whatnot. The more places our data is on the web the more places it can be plucked from and used for nefarious purposes.

So.. who's next? Heck, who's even left? I don't think a single major gaming company has escaped getting hacked this year. This is beyond insane.

It's beyond insane companies who do most of their business online have such poor security.

Presumably, Squeenix operates under a very strict definition of personal information. They didn't disclose, for example, the circumference of your dick or how much you make in a year. That--that kind of information is personal.

This is what I hope these hacks change. Every time you're forced to get yet another god damn login or account or join some pointless club that amounts to another newsletter e-mail, all just to play an online game, it serves as yet another service that has your information that can be hacked.

So, all in all, the intrusion wasn't that severe.

@Swoxx: I am (in the JP one at least, don't think I am in NA, maybe) , I think it's nice they alerted members even if nothing was actually accessed.

We need to goto war with the hackers.

If they are just giving the companies a wake up call then fine but if anything goes missing, thats not cool.

Seriously though, with all of the headlines this year, companies that want you to join this club or that club in order to unlock this special weapon or this exclusive content can fuck straight off.

I wasn't especially comfortable about giving out my personal information before, and while I don't exactly expect to fall victim to any sort of identity theft or anything, I am protective of said things, and it'd be nice to know that it's secure, something that publishers and developers seem to be able to guarantee less and less as time marches on.

Square needs to get their business in order
