The PlayStation 3 Is Officially Third-Dimension Compliant

Your 3DTV is finally getting put to the test.

Now, the Feisar crafts are going to boost THROUGH THE SCREEN!
Now, the Feisar crafts are going to boost THROUGH THE SCREEN!
Well, it's finally here. The 3D-pocalypse has arrived. Throw away the red-and-blue specs that came with your copy of G-Force. You don't need them anymore. Your PlayStation 3 is now equipped to play games in stereoscopic 3D.

Well, technically, the PS3 has been 3D-enabled for about two months. The "PS3D" update (nobody calls it that) was pushed to systems in April. But there weren't any games on the system that support the stereoscopic 3D visual modes. However, during the PlayStation Network maintenance on Wednesday, Sony updated a handful of games/demos on the service to support 3D through your stereoscopic-enabled televisions.

So, what games will you soon be watching fly through your screen and towards your face? The two games that fully support 3D are Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD. It's important to make the distinction of full 3D support here, because the 3D support of the other two games is most definitely not full. PAIN features stereoscopic 3D on only the tutorial and downtown levels of the game, so your PAIN DLC is not supported. The fourth 3D enabled game is the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift demo. That's the demo, folks. The full retail game is not supported yet... but I have to imagine that if, for instance, Sony announced a new MotorStorm game at E3, that release would feature full stereoscopic 3D support right out of the box.

You'll only have a handful of levels in PAIN, but you'll still be able to fling that dude THROUGH THE SCREEN!!!
You'll only have a handful of levels in PAIN, but you'll still be able to fling that dude THROUGH THE SCREEN!!!
Of course, if your actually looking to get your 3D-enabled gaming on, you'll need to own a TV set that support stereoscopic 3D. Sony's line of stereoscopic BRAVIA sets go on sale later this month, complete with a set of codes to download the three PSN games above.

So, there you go, folks. A console now has built in support for 3D games. This means it's much easier for developers to actually make games that support this 3D business because the basics of that functionality are already in the hardware. 3D-enabled games are going to become more and more prevalent. There's nothing we can do to stop it... well, unless no one buys it. That would put a stop to it pretty quickly.

Are you guys ready to adapt to these news stereoscopic sets and 3D glasses? Or do you still wonder why/if people are really interested in this 3D stuff to begin with? And, regardless of your position, don't you at least agree that Wipeout HD could look badass in 3D?

Why should they have waited longer? The number one problem with the PS3 is that every feature it gets is something that the 360 has had for at least a year. This is the one time when they got something before Microsoft.

"  You know what, I saw Avatar four times in theatres. Each one in 3D. Once on an IMAX certified screen. I watched it for 30 minutes on a 60" plasma on BD and it looked instantly better. I saw things in backgrounds that I couldn't before; they were overly out of focus in 3D. I also saw richer deeper colours and even more detail within the faces of the characters.  3D robs you of focus and colour in movies, performance and comfort in games. It dims out the content. Even if they get rid the glasses and give us 3-dimensional holograms, it will rob the director of choosing your perspective.  I've given up on this as a future for films, games and most other media.     "
That's how I feel, too.
I have only seen two new movies in 3D, but I didn't like it at all.
The constant forced focus feels really uncomfortable to me.

It's just a firmware update and what I'd imagine is a relatively simple update to the games. There's absolutely no reason for them to wait. If anything they show their support for this technology with this update, telling potential customers "Look, we've got 3D games! Why not buy a fancy new 3D TV set?"

Stereoscopic gaming is here to stay folks. Haters and technophiles will do what they always have in the face of high resolution gaming and 5.1 surround until they realize it's all okay and the world will not end.

from Sony's point of view its about giving value to the 3D TVs they are making, (thus the games free with those sets)

you spend a butt load on that TV you better be able to show off something on it.

I really doubt it - it's just more of a passing fad. I have had stereoscopic 3D available on my 9800GTX for PC, but the fact is that most people will not feel like purchasing a 3D HDTV.

There is also the fact that it is an annoyance to have to wear glasses to even see the 3D effect - glasses alone are what will never make stereoscopic 3D a viable technology. Simply put, not everyone will want to wear glasses and have to buy a few sets of glasses for the family to wear just to view their TV.

This technology is only a passing fad, if only something that may last years but more as a bonus feature then anything that stands out.

Once a 3DHDTV (what a mouthful) becomes affordable then I might get one, but I have a 50inch 1080p HDTV as it is and really two download games and a demo is not enough to spend a few thousand pounds on a new TV (dollars for you American Types) but maybe with Killzone 3 and maybe the new Motorstorm and GT5 etc I may, only may, consider it in the future. Mind I am thinking years into the future.

It wasn't until the beginning of 2008 that I finally bought an HDTV even though console gaming was in HD well before that. I have to imagine that there won't be any 3D gaming in my house for at lest 3 more years. What can I say, I'd rather spend all my money on games and gadgets than new HDTV's. Not to mention that if I wanted to do this I'd have to buy a new TV.

Sony is acting rather than reacting here. In order to sell their 3D Bravias, Sony are giving people a reason to switch to 3D. Your idea of "wait 'til everyone owns a 3DTV before implementing 3D" is not a smart way for them to make money. Sony would much prefer to be in the position of market leaders rather than safely following the crowd, and though they may be taking somewhat of a risk, it's bound to pay off for them in the long run.

I don't really understand the hate, I understand the misdirection of most people, but I have a feeling this could work. The first time I went to see a 3D movie (stereoscopic) it hurt my eyes a little bit , but I got used to it as that is one of the issues with 3D vs. the gaming public is headaches amongst many other problems; but I though the 3D was actually kinda cool it brings you more into the immersion, and games being all about immersion now a days it's a step in the right directions, and sure it's not going to be perfect right off the bat but I'm sure it's going to lead to good things.
