The PlayStation 3 Is Officially Third-Dimension Compliant

Your 3DTV is finally getting put to the test.

Now, the Feisar crafts are going to boost THROUGH THE SCREEN!
Now, the Feisar crafts are going to boost THROUGH THE SCREEN!
Well, it's finally here. The 3D-pocalypse has arrived. Throw away the red-and-blue specs that came with your copy of G-Force. You don't need them anymore. Your PlayStation 3 is now equipped to play games in stereoscopic 3D.

Well, technically, the PS3 has been 3D-enabled for about two months. The "PS3D" update (nobody calls it that) was pushed to systems in April. But there weren't any games on the system that support the stereoscopic 3D visual modes. However, during the PlayStation Network maintenance on Wednesday, Sony updated a handful of games/demos on the service to support 3D through your stereoscopic-enabled televisions.

So, what games will you soon be watching fly through your screen and towards your face? The two games that fully support 3D are Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD. It's important to make the distinction of full 3D support here, because the 3D support of the other two games is most definitely not full. PAIN features stereoscopic 3D on only the tutorial and downtown levels of the game, so your PAIN DLC is not supported. The fourth 3D enabled game is the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift demo. That's the demo, folks. The full retail game is not supported yet... but I have to imagine that if, for instance, Sony announced a new MotorStorm game at E3, that release would feature full stereoscopic 3D support right out of the box.

You'll only have a handful of levels in PAIN, but you'll still be able to fling that dude THROUGH THE SCREEN!!!

Of course, if your actually looking to get your 3D-enabled gaming on, you'll need to own a TV set that support stereoscopic 3D. Sony's line of stereoscopic BRAVIA sets go on sale later this month, complete with a set of codes to download the three PSN games above.

So, there you go, folks. A console now has built in support for 3D games. This means it's much easier for developers to actually make games that support this 3D business because the basics of that functionality are already in the hardware. 3D-enabled games are going to become more and more prevalent. There's nothing we can do to stop it... well, unless no one buys it. That would put a stop to it pretty quickly.

Are you guys ready to adapt to these news stereoscopic sets and 3D glasses? Or do you still wonder why/if people are really interested in this 3D stuff to begin with? And, regardless of your position, don't you at least agree that Wipeout HD could look badass in 3D?

This is great! Or it would be, if I ever decide to shell out enough money for a 3DTV or monitor. Which I probably won't, so yeah.

This is so dumb. I understand that Sony is trying to differentiate the PS3 from the Xbox, but relying on overpriced equipment that no one has (like 3D TVs) is not the way to do it.

Just when I'm starting to get my content in crisp, well defined HD, you wanna make it all blurry again!?!? ...no thanks.

Same sentiments here.  People are still JUST upgrading to their HDTV, they are not going to pick up a 3D TV now, or upgrade in the next year. "

Totally agree. Also, I agree with whoever said that 3d takes away from the sharpness of the picture.

Great, now I can balance 3D glasses in front of my normal glasses while trying to concentrate on interacting with a video game. That is if I decide to spend the big bucks on a 3D TV. This 3D nonsense can fuck right off, especially in video games where, in my opinion, it doesn't enhance anything.

"Your" should be "you're" at the beginning of the fourth paragraph.

Matt, you said "3D" enough times in that article that I started reading "silicon graphics computers" at some point and forgot the purpose of this article entirely.  = D  Thank you.

Still can't play PS2 games, meanwhile. They must be starting at the very bottom of the suggestion box.

I wonder why they couldn't make it work at 60hz and reduce the framerate for both eyes to 30fps. I want 3D but I don't want to spend uber bucks when I just recently bought a TV. The 120hz requirement eats my butt.

" There is also the fact that it is an annoyance to have to wear glasses to even see the 3D effect - glasses alone are what will never make stereoscopic 3D a viable technology. Simply put, not everyone will want to wear glasses and have to buy a few sets of glasses for the family to wear just to view their TV.  "

You realize that glasses setups are not the only option right? The existing non-glasses 3d screens do have an extremely limited angle of view, yes. But so did LCD screens years ago. Technology isn't going to just stop moving forward.

We have two ears, so they developed stereophonic audio. Folks didn't think it would last because almost nobody had stereos in their homes and people hated the concept of wearing headphones. We have two eyes, so they developed stereoscopic video. Random folks on the internet don't think it will last because almost nobody has stereoscopic TVs in their homes and people hate the concept of wearing special glasses.

The problem is that everybody is thinking in the short term. Also that most people recently bought a large, expensive HDTV and don't want to buy another so they try and convince themselves it's a fad. I'll never be convinced that it's passing technology, nor have I invested in it yet (before somebody pulls that "you spent money on it so you're the one trying to convince yourself" bullshit -- I'm smart enough to let the price come down and technology to improve first). The dedicated subwoofer is likely much more of a passing technology than stereoscopic visuals in media, and I'm a goddamn bass head.

The fact that so many gamers, who would benefit MOST from 3D, want it the LEAST just fucking blows my mind to no end.

As someone who already has a pair of fairly new TVs I can safely say: Fuck them.

3D seems like an amusing gimmick, but theres no way I will buy a tv with 3D support until these TVs break in 3-4 years, and even then I'll only get it if 3D gaming is widespread and nearly every TV supports it.

It would be nice if they figured out how to retroactively add 3D support to existing new TVs, especially since I have a Sony Bravia from last year (It was free =P).

Since I already own Super Stardust HD, I was hoping that there would be some way for me to play that in 3D without the need for a new TV. I have a collection of shitty 3D glasses, including those weird ones that theatres have used lately (The ones that are just a little darker and don't use red/blue or any colours).

Lame.

I just brought a new Samsung 3D TV, and I must say these few games look good on it. Pain was just ok. 3D is still to expensive.

I've been playing 3D games on PC for awhile now. Your frame rate usually gets cut in half while playing 3D on PC (makes sense don't it?), makes me wonder what kind of hits these games will take in the performance department. Loss in resolution and frame rate I'm sure.

I stopped using the 3D for my PC games because it gives me a massive headache pretty fast. It did look pretty slick in some games though...

thats not what i said bro. i just said a lot of people are interested in it. avatar's box office numbers arent bullshit. and the techno wizzards behind this stuff must be making really impressive stuff to be getting the entire industry behind it. its not necessary, they dont need 3D to sell tv's/

Gee, I can't wait to spend $100 on a shitty pair of giant glasses that dont' fit very well over my prescription glasses and probably have a cord or another expensive proprietary battery that has to be constantly recharged so I can comfortably and leisurely play videogames from my sofa in my down-time.
