What's This X-Wing Buzz All About?

LucasArts is teasing some sort of resurgence for its hallowed Star Wars flight combat games. But what's going on exactly?

Don't call it a comeback (yet).
Don't call it a comeback (yet).
Now that the Monkey Island series is enjoying all kinds of new popularity, and several of LucasArts' other hallowed old properties are back in action, it's time to start asking about the LucasArts games that really matter: X-Wing and TIE Fighter. G4's Patrick Klepek did just that, starting all kinds of trouble this morning by inquiring of the company's president, Darrell Rodriguez.

I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series. His answer?

"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."

By the way, that's his number of dots, not mine. We conducted the interview over e-mail. Five dots is far more mysterious than three dots, so I'm willing to bet I'm onto something here. Whether it's a full-on remake ala The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition or an addition to the company's growing Steam lineup…well, who cares? Either one would be the first acknowledgement of a major part of LucasArts' legacy in a long, long time.

Let's examine a list of possibilities Rodriguez might be referring to, in order of descending likelihood.

  1. Steam rerelease
  2. Steam and Xbox Live Arcade rereleases
  3. Rereleases with some kind of enhanced graphics and/or reworked controls
  4. An actual, new, honest-to-goodness X-Wing game

Number 1 is practically a given, considering the success Lucas seems to have been having putting its other games on Steam. Anything beyond that and I'm not holding my breath. As much as I'd like to think a brand new X-Wing might be on the way (and might be good), you didn't hear anyone getting particularly excited about the last project from Larry Holland and Totally Games, Alien Syndrome. On the other hand, I don't think I'd trust anyone else with a new X-Wing game.

Let's put on our wait-and-see hats, shall we? In the meantime, what would you want to see if X-Wing were to come back all proper-like?

A new X-Wing game would be superb :D

Being able to adjust the attributes of your ship would be cool, and possibly planetary missions?

My vote is for a combo option 2/3, ala the Monkey Island retooling.  Hopefully sooner rather than later, too!

I hope it'll be a proper sequel to TIE Fighter, and not just one of those lame Rogue Squadron games.

Nope not really, x wing vs tie-fighter would be like a little fraction of battlefront III. Battlefront series was great..thats the series that needs to come back.

Oh man! I bet half the kids who go to this site have never played X-Wing or Tie Fighter. I played it on a 386 rockin' Windows 3.1. I didn't even have a sound card! Had to play X-Wing in silence, and it was still amazing. Then my grandparents got a state-of-the-art HP that had a sound card. When I played Tie Fighter over there... oh lord the good memories...

I'd rather see new versions of Tie FIghter and X-Wing. The best part of those games was the campaign, story and overall atmosphere. I've never played X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, but I have the impression that it has no story, no campaign, no characters – nothing else, except from multiplayer dogfighting. I can see why they'd want to because of the new found popularity of online gaming on consoles, but I'd be less interested in that, personally.

I'm all for a new X-Wing/TIE Fighter game as long as they don't import stuff from the new trilogy or shoehorn on-foot sections into it. Rebel Strike wasn't very good.

I hope they can do a re-imaged X-Wing v Tie-Fighter game online, XW/TF/XVT were the only games I was amazing at.  I also loved X-Wing Alliance and I would re-buy that in a heartbeat.  But imagine 15 on 15 or 30 on 30 space battles.

If they did a restoration similar to the Marathon 2: Durandal XBLA release, then I would be pleased as punch.

I'll concede that the first and third Rogue Squadron games weren't anything mind-blowing, but you honestly didn't like the second game? That was one of the finest games that the Gamecube had to offer, IMO.

I would be very, very happy with a simple graphical update à la Monkey Island for Tie Fighter.  They should definitely keep the original score though. That music was pretty good.

I would love a new X-wing game.  I loved  XW v. TF and XW Alliance too, so maybe I just want more Star Wars flight sims that aren't Rogue Squadron.

@NukeSpoon  Ugh, no planetary missions.  Period.

Adventure games, Mechwarrior and X-Wing.  Seems like all we need is a new/remade Commander Keen (or other classic PC side scroller) and Doom and the 90's will totally be back.

I think X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter would be great as a Sam and Max type of deal. Update the graphics a bit and release episodic content. You could expand the worlds fiction a bit, join up with this squadron or that squadron, so on and so forth. In other words, don't take the series too seriously. I doubt I'd plop down $20 or $30 for some all inclusive experience, but I would drop $10 every now and then for interesting episodes.

The hype around X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter caused me to make my very first web-site before the game launched. Way back in the days where GeoCities ruled all. Close to 13 years ago. Like most others familiar with the previous games it was a huge dissapointment after coming from TIE fighter.

What I would want: A re-release of either or both games on xbox live with improved graphics and the ability to play co-op via live.  I think the escort missions would be a hoot playing with friends.

@snide: I assumed you tried XW Alliance?  I found the multiplayer much better than XVT was, in fact I found the MP to be what XVT promised to be but wasn't in the end.

DO NOT PRESUME TO ORDER ME!

These games were amazing, I really hope they give the old classics a lick of paint and maybe make a new one as long as it isn't terrible but I would be genuinely delighted with a graphically updated TIE fighter.

I always wanted to play these games but I've been worried since "Sim" is always used to describe them.  My favorite flight games are Star Fox and Afterburner :(

They are space ships so I always assumed  that it'd be like MS Flight Sim except 50x more complicated since you have (made up names alert) roxian thrusters, flagolian capicators, transmographic matter metamorphers and stuff like that to monitor on top of all the regular stuff you'd see on an airplane.

@sickVisionz: The word sim was probably used because there wasn't really any other word to describe them. They aren't at all complicated as you imagine (although the market for ultra realistic space sims does exist). Freespace 2 is probably the best example of the genre outside of X-Wing and TIE Fighter.

Answering the question above: just a next gen X-wing would be a wish come true. I mean, just the same story line as the old ones, same game options, same inmersive ambience, but with all the cutting edge visuals and sound of today (and, obviously, it has to be a simulator). C'mon, can't imagine what in the hells has been distracting the industry from making such a game.

I've played ALL Star Wars space fighting games. Rogue Squadron for the Game Cube was great, but simply an arcade (my x-wing turns around automatically when reachin the boundaries of the combat zone???? what the...????). The X-wing sim series are the best with no doubt at all. I think there is an entire generation of Star Wars fans wiling to go back in to the cockpit of a X-wing/TIE Fighfer under those conditions of freeness.

DO IT!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

I'd hope this stonker arrives on ALL platforms, but as a person with all platforms available and a long time XvT mad fan I really want it to arrive on PSN because this is a game that could actually benefit from the Sixaxis motion control.  There were a whole lot of keys in the game, and having freeform flight would be quite a slick option.

X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter was the shit.  I would definitely jump at the chance to play that again, as the originals just don't run well on newer PC's.  And an XBLA remake?  Or, dare to hope, a full blown new XVT game?  Hot damn that would be fantastic.

Proud to say that I still have right here on my wall the Tie Fighter poster that I ordered with my original copy of the game,
from the LucasArts store.

Wishlist for X-wing: better balancing, of course.  Fewer escort missions.  And a bevy of cheats/trainers.  God, some of those were hilarious.  Oh, and animated sprite cutscenes please.  Don't go all "re-imagined" just to keep your artists busy.
Or legos. But only animated sprite legos.

Fact: Best thing about X-wing was the fact it SPED YOU UP in the trench run.  So few games bother to do that.
Man, now I gotta look at new flight sticks.  Been ages.  I've never owned a flight stick that wasn't a DA-15.  Oh Thrustmaster, whither the glory days?

@Ouroboros: I was never interested in the MP of space sims. It always seemed to boil down to a couple fools circling each other while slowing their speed down to the point of boredom.

For high flying space fighter MP combat I always preferred Sub-Space!

X Wing was my obsession back in 1993.  I used to watch just the beginning of these games just for the awesome cutscenes. Especially when I got a SoundBlaster card and could actually hear everything going on in the opening cinemas. Tie Fighter was even better what with being able to play as the empire which was such a perverse and awesome idea when I was 8 years old. I even did a book report on The Stele Chronicles which was a short story packed with Tie Fighter that also acted as a manual for the game itself.

So I think it should go without saying that a new game in the series would be more than a little welcome.

I think that TIE Fighter was the first game I ever finished, and it caught me completely by surprise.  I was just expecting the game to go on forever, so when the credits started rolling I was crestfallen.  It never occurred to me that there would be an end to the missions, which kept getting crazier and crazier.  The TIE Defender? Absolutely nuts.

Also, way better than the Rouge Squadron games.
