Yes, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Will Support Mods

Hopefully you won't have to make a "slightly prettier women" face pack this time around.

I feel like we shouldn’t be surprised that a PC game supports mods, but I suppose times have been changing. But Bethesda, fortunately for modders out there, hasn't changed too much. Like its predecessors, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will allow for player-created content on the PC. Bethesda recently revealed plans on its forums to release a “Creation Kit” for Skyrim, which, if it operates anything like the “Elder Scrolls Construction Set” for Morrowind or Oblivion, will give content creators the power to do just about anything they want to the forthcoming RPG, from custom landscaping and animation to NPC creation and quest shenanigans.

"We've always been impressed with what the community has done with our tools," a Bethesda rep wrote on the game’s official forums (spotted by Joystiq). "Like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set for Morrowind and Oblivion, we plan to release [a] Creation Kit so you guys can mod Skyrim."

No Caption Provided

I don’t have the greatest sense of what the community managed to create for the past Elder Scrolls joints, but after spending some time at the TESNexus and this guy’s page for his stunning Quest for Glory project, I’m starting to realize that people cared about the tools enough, at least, to create oodles of ambitious and fun projects. Hopefully Skyrim’s tools can provide the same kind of playground for modders.

Impress enough people with these tools and it'll carry more weight with development studios than a university degree in game design.

I wonder how many people were turned off by Oblivion's leveling yet didn't know about the OOO, Fran's mod or Oblivion XP which completely changed that stuff for the better

At this point, it would be shocking for Bethesda to NOT include mod support.

I hope they'll include a conversion kit for the Xbox 360, or at least release the most popular mods...

Oblivion was almost unplayable without interface and guard AI mods. Leveling system wasn't great either but it didn't bother me that much, so I decided not to mod it.

A Hero's Work has been cancelled. This is because of a number of other Sierra-based fan games being shut down by Vivendi.

What does an old Morrowind mod have to do with this?

Not much of a surprise as mods is the prime reason that I continue to play games like Oblivion or Fallout 3 to this day. Not to mention that it can be a pretty good incentive for choosing the PC version over the console versions.

The mod communities for Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and now New Vegas, are massive and incredibly impressive, and a large amount of great work have been done by them.  In fact, I'll say it now, Bethesda's mod community is the biggest mod community in the history of PC gaming, it's that big.  There are tens of thousands of mods, big and small.

One of the most impressive modding feats of recent times was a Total Conversion mod released for Oblivion last year, called Nehrim - At Fates Edge.  It's awesome and does some things to Oblivion that you'd never expect.  It's a full fledged open world RPG, as fully featured as any other, with a new XP based leveling system, a whole new skill system, a totally new hand-crafted world, new sound track, it's even professionally voice acted and recorded.  All for a free mod.  It's awesome, play it if you have Oblivion PC.

Achievements will probably stand in the way of it happening. I guess they could treat the mods like cheats though, and make it not possible to earn achievements while running mods.

Either way I highly doubt it'll happen.

What are the odds that the PC version will again ship with a massive UI that has to be scaled down by a mod?

This is good news anyway. Makes my purchase of the game more inevitable.

I cringed when I read oodles in that article.

This is good news i guess, but was kind of expected. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 all had huge mod communities. If they did not support mods with Skyrim there would be A LOT of unhappy fans.

@zerdune: I wouldn't say unplayable, if you didn't have the PC version then you wouldn't know what you would be missing,On the other hand Morrowind was completely unplayable without a shit ton of mods.

@Agent47:  Morrowind was playable without mods. I would even say it was one of the best games I ever played. I started modding it only when I finished main quest and most of secondary quests.

Honestly, the modding community for Elder Scrolls has been so consistently effective, I don't think that any kind of possible exclusive content for the 360 versions (either as day one downloads, pre-order bonuses, or bonus content for new purchases)  is not going to be enough to make me buy it. It just seems to me that mods might be a better download, or equivalent download, compared to sponsored exclusive content.

I guess that's good? I'm still getting the 360 version, because I don't have a good computer and the problem I have with the TES mod scene is finding the stuff that is actually good and not totally ancillary or dumb. So, not "Realistic Bodies" or whatever else they want to call their nude mod.

@ArbitraryWater: except that it isn't that hard to find what is good. Nexus has a great top 10 filter. Especially for the newer releases like Dragon Age. I expect they will do the same thing for ES V

Well it's not achievements or how they would charge for it.
Microsoft Hate's all player made Content.
EX: Unreal Tournament 3 on the 360 doesn't even allow mods.
-The PS3 version of UT3 does.
Seems 2 me the PS3 has a higher chance of mods.
(NOTE: Mods can & will make the game unstable, This could be another reason why consoles don't accept mods.)

Really, though the mod community for Fallout 3 and Oblivion is great.  I still play both games because they keep coming up with wicked stuff that prolongs the game's appeal.  My current game is nothing like when I first got it and that's why I am still entertained by it.

Funny enough if the mod communities had access like this to more games with clear problems, think about how many more games would end up working better and making it a better experience in the PC?

If a developer knows their PC version of a game may become busted, just release a modding kit with only necessary restrictions.  The game will perfect itself over time with enough support from modders that feel the game would be better for it.

However the thing I wouldn't want is developers starting to rely on what can be viewed as free development time in order to be lazy and not fix these problems as much as possible before they go gold.  That would be just in poor form for any developer that is caught intentionally doing it.

Take a page out of Fireaxis' book and include IN GAME mod support, because to be honest thats what gives the game staying power.

I feel the most popular visual mods for the Gamebryo engine made most characters look out of place and from an anime. Sure they had more visual fidelity, but that doesn't matter when Paladin Cross looked less gruff and out of character, among other situations. That made modding out of the the question for that quick fix.

Otherwise, most mods I download are quick fixes and a few hefty mods after my first playthrough. Both of them are fantastic.
