You Will Not Play Destiny 2 This Year

But you might play a "large" new Destiny expansion, you know, if you're into that sort of thing.

It turns out Jason Schreier's fine, borderline-obsessive Destiny reporting over at Kotaku was correct: the sequel to Destiny (let's call it Destiny 2) will not be out in 2016.

Well, Schreier's report just said "delayed," which I previously took to mean "November instead of September." Activision demands a steady stream of grist for the ever-grinding revenue mill, after all. But sure enough, Bungie itself has confirmed Destiny 2 is now a 2017 game:

Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.

Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

Maybe you should find another game to play while you wait for the Destiny sequel? This one seems nice.
Maybe you should find another game to play while you wait for the Destiny sequel? This one seems nice.

At least they've got some plans in place to hopefully pump a little life into the live game, the plight of which has gotten pretty dire in the last few months with only a slow trickle of minor events to keep diehard players interested. (I'm not one of those players.) Raising the level cap sometime this Spring and adding some straight-up loot is certainly one way to entice lapsed players, but that can only go so far without some actual new content to play through. Maybe they'll go back and spruce up those old raids to make them viable for level-capped players while they're at it? And I'd hope the "large expansion" slated to hit later this year will be at least on the order of The Taken King, the only previous Destiny expansion I'd describe as "large" (or "good" for that matter). So in the absence of a full new game, these forthcoming updates sound like at least a little light in the darkness. Yeah, I went there.

I've long held that people who expected a proper Destiny sequel two years after the original release were crazy. Looking at Bungie's track record, the full studio hasn't turned around a completely new game in 24 months (outside of the Halo 3 spinoffs ODST and Reach) in the 15 years since Halo became a thing. So the idea that Destiny 2 would hit a mere two years after Destiny never seemed realistic to me.

The biggest question in all this is, when will Destiny 2 come out? Are we talking a delay of just a few months, with a release to slide in before the end-of-March fiscal deadline? Or will Bungie get a full extra year to make this thing what it needs to be, and avoid the mistakes of the first game's launch? A new Destiny certainly seems like the kind of big, momentous tentpole you'd want to hang your holiday product release schedule on, but then, shareholders need to get their taste, and they're not big on waiting around past the next quarter.

It's nice there's some update coming, because my god the game is horribly dull at this point. No reason to play fo months after you did the King's Fall challenges. I just hope Destiny 2 is on more or less brand new architecture and they leave the old consoles behind completely (well maybe some character import if that's in the cards) so Destiny 2 can really be the game it needs to be.

Well, this news is nothing if not expected. I keep hearing about the difficulty of adding content to Destiny due to its peculiar engine. Im not sure how or if that issue is fixable. That said, i thought it would be a miracle to get a full sequel within 2 years when part of the team is being used for ongoing patches, updates, and as of last year....expansions.

The wait is no big deal if Destiny 2 reaches its potential. The upcoming content drop being substantial, this spring or summer would help, too.

I could foresee an outcome with more delays and then a disappointing sequel ending Destiny as Bungie's tent pole, though. Its really hard to predict.

I am rooting for Destiny to live on and only get better. When its at its best, i have really enjoyed it.

Destiny 1 was so bad, I don't want to play Destiny 2 in 2017... or 2018... maybe 2019 though. I might feel ready to give it a shot then.

As someone who got into Destiny after the Taken King expansion was released, I enjoyed myself and thought it was a good MMO. I bought it during the Christmas sale and had fun. But this is also coming from someone who doesn't play MMO's like that and Destiny was my first real time burner. Hopefully, they'll release another content filled expansion before they dedicate themselves to doing Destiny 2.

Destiny is, will always be and has been, a massive goddamn disaster.

I don't think so, it all depends on what the Devs do with it. Just look at Diablo 3. Went from a horrible start to a really good game now but it took time and a lot of revamping stuff.

Didn't fall for the first game. What makes you think I am going to be a sucker for the second one?

Surprised at the number of people who assume the sequel couldn't improve on the original. Strange to just ignore a video game franchise you could get some fun out of just because the first entry was divisive.

Also strange to incessantly shit on a game in a genre that you didn't want it to be in every time it's mentioned in conversation instead of just moving on with your life and realizing that not all games are made for you! That's the part about Destiny talk that I'll never understand.

@ajamafalous: You could apply that a lot of people across the internet. Some people just want to be agitated by something.

Absolutely! I just figured people would be over Destiny 18 months after its release.

I wish more MMO's would make sequels. I'm not going to pay for an MMO where other players have months or years more progress than I do, and I hate progress resets like the WoW expansions.

But Destiny has progress resets too where old gear becomes useless, so fuck that.

So does every other loot driven game that gets expansion content. I never really understood this criticism of Destiny because it is par for the course. No one was rocking gear from the base game when the played Claptrap's New Robot Revolution in Borderlands or when they faced Malthael in Reaper of Souls or Baal in Lord of Destruction or The Mother in Dragon Age Origins Awakening or Arthas in World of Warcraft or in any of the myriad of other loot games with expansions or DLC. Loot based games were doing this years before Destiny was even thought of. Why were people so surprised and offended when Destiny used a tried and true progression model that hundreds of other games use?

Destiny is a fantastic game, nearly crippled by terrible decisions.

I struggle to get excited for anything Destiny at this point. I pray that changes.

I'm going to try the beta this weekend on pc(and maybe ps4) and hopefully it scratches the itch that Destiny couldn't reach.

I would play Destiny so much more if there was matchmaking for the story.
