I know it's Kevin Conroy (and he's actually... surprising wooden, disappointing). But I just imagine Bale's voice! A SMALL PART OF ME WISHES THAT A VOICE ACTOR IMITATED BALE'S VOICE.
Just a small part, that would've been amazing xD.

Batman: Arkham Asylum puts you behind the cowl of the iconic Dark Knight, fighting his way through Arkham Asylum to stop the Joker from enacting a sinister plot that would have grave consequences for Gotham City.
Does anyone else just imagine Christian Bale when you play this?
As do I. Mark Hammel's joker is incredible, but Kevin Conroy's performance is.... well, poor.
Then again maybe he was just learning the ropes and he will find his feet later on in the game.
I don't know what Kevin Conroy has to learn, looking at his past works:
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009) (VG) (voice) .... Batman / Bruce Wayne
- "Ben 10: Alien Force" .... Bellacus / ... (1 episode, 2008)
- Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) (V) (voice) .... Batman / Bruce Wayne
- "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" .... Phantom Stranger (1 episode)
- "The Batman" .... John Grayson (1 episode, 2006)
- "Justice League" .... Batman / ... (56 episodes, 2001-2006)
- "Static Shock" .... Batman / ... (5 episodes, 2002-2004)
- Lords of Everquest (2003) (VG) (voice) .... Lord Palasa
- Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003) (V) (voice) .... Bruce Wayne / Batman
- Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu (2003) (VG) (voice) .... Batman / Bruce Wayne
- Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003) (VG) (voice) .... Lord Jack/Cleaner/Commando
- "Batman Beyond" .... Bruce Wayne / ... (46 episodes, 1999-2001)
- Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001) (VG) (voice) .... Fisherman
If his performance is wooden, then it's probably going to stay that way. I'm pretty sure that recording for a video game is more or less the same as recording for an animated show. You go into a recording studio, you read your lines (following any director cues), you go home. Actually, there it is. The problem is probably the director. Or the voice actor. Or both.
No, I hate Christian Bale's Batman voice and I feel that it wouldn't suit the game's style at all. Kevin Conroy's performance does seem a bit marred when Mark Hamill is giving an all out fantastic performance as the Joker but I couldn't imagine it any other way.
It also doesn't help that whenever you have a conversation with other NPC's ingame, Batman looks like a lifeless robot that has no special conversation animations.
Apparently Conroy was first choice to play Batman given his past experience and association. The developers also got what they wanted in terms of contrast between the deadly serious Batman and, well, jokey Joker. I think KingOfIceland got it right with the stiff interactions between Bats and NPC's. Conroy's lack of emotion was clearly intended but is exacerbated by technical and graphical issues. Plus, taking his voice away from the oft-associated figure of 90's animated Batman, wont sit right at first. Give it time (and a few more games, hopefully)
fuck you
sorrry i mean, no, i dont, thank god. im trying to erase the disgrace Batman Begins and The Dark Dick have brought on batman from my mind and the game is helping me do that.
Christian Bale's physical batman is nice. But the voice sounds like he has really severe throat and mouth cancer. Mark Hammil and Kevin Conroy both have done really good roles in the cartoons if I remember.
Kevin Conroy sounds just as great as he always does as Batman. The folks over at Comic Vine did an interview with Kevin Conroy and he mentioned that doing voice work for a game was much different than doing voice work for the animated series. Check it out.
Since I grew up hearing Conroy as the Bat, I like it a lot.
It may not be the best, but hey, they could've gotten Adam West instead...
" @Drebin_893: kevin conroy has been doing the voice of batman since 1991 "I know. Sorry, I guess I phrased myself poorly. I meant maybe the process of recording his voice for the game was different than he was used to.
NO. I like the Batman movies don't get me wrong but the voice Christian Bale uses for the role I think really is because his voice really doesn't suit Batman, where as Kevin Conroy's voice is deeper and really doesn't need to do much to make it work. So Christian Bale I think had to do something to make the voice work and I guess that was what they went with, but I think the way Kevin Conroy delivers his lines in Arkham Asylum fits in with the mood in a way and by making it as different to Joker's voice as possible it really makes you feel how opposite Batman and Joker are.
Kevin Conroy has changed the Batman voice depending on what batman is being portrayed, this one sounds that way since it is deeper into the batman history, with that bitch on wheels talking to him, oracle i mean. Mark Hammil is good but I really think the best voices were always from the first and second seasons of the Batman TAS. Here the Joker sounds more silly, his voice is higher pitched and the laugh is not the same. Maybe he tried to be more out there than usual. It makes the joker sound more crazy that a good mix of crazy with psychopath that enjoys murdering people.
I also hate this batman, in the demo, it just felt like Batman was being super cocky about the Joker. Especially that little conversation about the media and how he knows the joker is lying, or when Gordon says its a trap, "Of course it is." Damn batman, get over yourself.
On a positive note, I do think this is a good batman voice and like the character model they use. The joker could stand to be a little less lanky. Arms in the Unreal engine games always look dump, and so do their movements, thats why women and people of normal proportion look terrible, while guys like Batman and Marcus Fenix look ok.
I don't see what people have against Bale's Batman voice. It fits the character nicely, adding a perfect level of menace to a superhero based entirely off of inducing fear into its enemies.
i really love kevin conroys voice(im not gay but i would let him be inside me). i think its perfect for the character and also i grew up with that guy talking. but i have to say for AA its not so great, it sounds wooden. i think its the direction and not the actor thats screwed up.
but christian bale? no thank you.
" I don't see what people have against Bale's Batman voice. It fits the character nicely, adding a perfect level of menace to a superhero based entirely off of inducing fear into its enemies. "
God no, Nolan's Batman movies were great. But that voice.... was just lulz.
However it is embedded in my mind as THE Batman voice now. And Conroy just.... sucks in this.
He was great in the 90s series though.
Personally, I think Batman is supposed to sound a bit wooden, stiff, and even gravely. He's got to change his voice in case anyone is recording it and trying to find out who he is. Remember in Batman's world this wouldn't be so out of scope. Bale's voice is supposed to be intimidating and scary, 'make them fear you' sort of deal. That being said I don't imagine Bale when playing AA, Conroy does fine ( I think he sounds even and calm, not wooden, Batman wants to maintain the air of being in control of himself at all times, show no weakness)
I thought Bale was the worst Batman yet. Worse than Kilmer, worse than West. Mainly because I simply hate him... so my view is biased.
Conroy has obviously never done a videogame role before. I blame his underperformance on shitty, lazy voice direction. It's usually the fault of the director, not the talent. Hammil's Joker also suffers from this affliction. This is backed up by the fact that in the 90's, the voices were superbly delivered.
Christian Bale sounded like a fucking retard in batman " Hey bale why the fuck does it sound like there is 2000 lbs of cement in your nose?" "Hey Bale why the fuck do you whisper all the time?"
"Worse than Kilmer. "Yeah, he was worse than Kilmer but that's only because Kilmer is the best.
You guys really must be new to the Batman scene if you think Keven Conroy, the most revered voice actor for Batman ever, should imitate Christian Bale.
" Kevin Conroy is Batman. Nuff said!"NIcely said. Kevin Conroy's voice is what I hear in my head when I read Batman comics. I hope this game will introduce many people to the Batman comics and graphic novel. By far Batman has the most beautifully written stories and the art style that goes along with it is unmatched. It's obvious that the OP has never read any of them or have seen the animated show, he actually wanted Bale's voice in it.
Wow great post man, thanks. I dont think about going to comic vine enough, i should." Kevin Conroy sounds just as great as he always does as Batman. I think Keven Conroy would've prefer to work on a game more like Nolan North and the Uncharted crew did, which is all the actors, in Mocap suits, on set, acting the scenes, and all the while the sound and movement of the performance is recorded, compared to what he did with Batman AA which is him in a soundbooth for days and days all by himself.
I think Uncharted speaks for itself too because the performances are feeling much more alive and dynamic because the actors are getting to act with each other. This is something that should become a standard in this industry.
Here's a video that explains how Naughty dog works.
