Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Bosses are enemies that fight you at the end of a level or at a significant point in the story.
A level that is focused entirely on a boss encounter.
Collectibles are items such as coins, rings, gems, packages etc. that can be gathered, usually for some kind of reward, or sometimes to simply beat a level. Often (almost too often) the source of earning achievements and trophies on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Games that numerically track the player's progress towards completion of a specific goal, single level, or the entire game.
Games with achievements for failing. For the purpose of this concept, any kind of 'achievement' is acceptable - this includes trophies or in-game accomplishments.
When characters shed tears - often due to extreme sadness.
A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
A former digital distribution service for PC, Mac, and Linux games.
The concept of purchasing media and having it delivered over the internet. No physical representation of this content is given, and although the content resides on the user's hard drive they are typically granted a license to the product, rather than ownership of it.
Sometimes you need to crush a little rock to gain access to valuable objects - or even to find your way out of a sticky situation. The drill is your friend.
Electricity is commonly used as a damage-introducing element causing inanimate objects to become harmful (electrified water, floors, cables, etc). It can also refer to a power wielded by characters that generates sparks, is conductive to metal surfaces, forks or branches, and is often blue in color.
To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require players to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
A scripted sequence or even an entire level where the player character is falling from a great height. Gameplay typically includes avoiding debris or battling enemies (or sometimes both).
In games, fire can be an obstacle, a tool, a weapon, or a solution. Just don't play with it...unless you really want to.
The concept of a game referencing another game through mockery, parody or even directly. A game reference to the same franchise does not count.
A former download service for PC, Mac, Linux, and Android.
GamersGate is a client-free digital distribution service.
A glitch is an action performed within the bounds of a game engine that was not intended by the game's developers. Glitches are often performed by the player, though they can also occur independently.
A digital distribution platform that focuses on providing DRM-free computer games, both old and new.
A heads-up display is a graphical overlay of vital information used in most modern games.
A digital storefront which donates some of its profits to charity.
Frozen water. Ice can be slippery and it can be fun for ice skating.
A fourth-wall breaking situation in which a character tells the player to press a specific button or a reference to a button is shown within the environment. This mostly happens during tutorials.
Map Makers or Editors are built-in tools that allow the average gamer to tweak or fully customize a map of their own, with no mod or programming skills required.
A marketplace for indie game players and developers.
A situation where the player-controlled character loses their life immediately. The quickness of that demise is often a stark departure from the balance of power, and sometimes the rules, established by the developers during the rest of the game.
Whether it be a close up shotgun blast, far away sniper rifle, explosive, or backstab, the "one hit kill" is a popular kill strategy. Usually hard to master and even harder to avoid, the instant kill is loved and hated by gamers everywhere.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
