    The Straight and Narrow 0

“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.” William Gibson once spoke of writing his first novel Neuromancer (which would become the progenitor of the cyberpunk genre) that by not explaining what certain slang meant or how certain machines operated, his key goal was for the reader to experience complete culture shock. In a similar fashion the Souls games provide the exact same feeling of entering a foreign world that isn’t conveniently waiting to exp...

A great game, held back only by the ones that came before it. 0

Bloodborne... if there ever was a game that made me bittersweet, this is the one I would name. Bloodborne bears nothing in name with Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls II, but everything in spirit. Nothing is named 'souls', instead everything is named 'blood'. Make no mistake, the set up, structure, design philosophy, gameplay mechanics... it is all identical to previous games in the series.Bloodborne does make some changes to its formula, but they all - at least they seem to at first - ar...

    Bloodborne Review 0

You know what? Maybe I'm not the right person to praise Bloodborne. I never enjoyed Demon's Souls, I didn't care for Dark Souls 2, and the furthest I ever got in the first Dark Souls game was the boss fight with the Capra Demon. But this wasn't the case when it came to Bloodborne. No matter how many times I failed this time around, I instead got right back up and continued pushing forward. Bloodborne isn't just a fantastic game, it might just be the game that finally got me to appreciate and und...

Incredibly exciting and a major step forward for the series. 0

Bloodborne is a game that has carried a lot of expectations with it. Although its not technically a souls game, it is heavily inspired by that series, taking many of its mechanics forward to Hidetaka Miyazaki's latest creation and for all intents and purposes functions basically in the same genre that Dark souls and Demons souls occupied. But its the changes, not the holdovers, that make Bloodborne a fantastic game. After Dark souls II, I personally felt like another game in that exact same mold...

Ready to jump back into the nightmare? 0

When Bloodborne launched earlier this year it was a special game. Still the best experience I’ve had on PlayStation 4 so far; it was a beautiful yet horrifying game. Perhaps most well known for it’s extremely hard difficulty but under the surface lies so much more. When it was all said and done I felt emotionally and physically exhausted but adored the experience.Which now brings us to The Old Hunters; Bloodborne’s first and seemingly only expansion. Jumping back into a game so...

    Praise the... Blood 0

If you're a fan of the Souls series, you owe it to yourself to play Bloodborne. This game takes the classic Souls formula and makes it better. Gone are the days of hiding behind your shield while waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Bloodborne rewards the bold with fast paced, nail biting action. If you own a PS4, you need this game....

Bleed for me: Bloodborne is a great remodel to a beloved system 0

I don't often dream of showering myself in the blood of my enemies but while playing through Bloodborne I often found myself dreaming of how to most effectively eviscerate the beasts that infest Yharnam.FromSoftware's third foray into the third-person RPG/Masochism simulator is, in my opinion, it's best yet. Gone are the shields that we so heavily rely on in the "Souls" games to block oncoming attacks, replaced instead by a trusty Hunter's pistol (or blunderbuss or rifle, whichever you end up c...

    Bloodborne: the Quintessential Action-RPG 0

When it was announced that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls' creator Hidetaka Miyazaki would not be on board for Dark Souls II, some fans of the series became skeptical of the quality and direction of that game. Though Dark Souls II was a good game, a certain life was missing from the world of Drangleic that brought down the experience. You might say some part of it felt hollow, or perhaps a bit drained of its soul. A deviation from the standard Miyazaki set, Dark Souls II is not the game it could h...

Bloodborne Review - Not the best "souls" game, but still good 0

Coming straight off of Dark Souls 2, I dove right into Bloodborne. However, I don’t think that was a good idea. Naturally I instantly started making comparisons, and because Bloodborne was the new kid on the block, it took the majority of the blame. The controls seemed too fast, no shield meant that I couldn’t softball difficult characters, the lack of a simple sword to begin with, and on and on. It took a little time, but once I was past the first area I had built up my level enough...

A bloody great time killing and dying 0

From Software has an interesting fascination with death. Every game they’ve ever made seems to relish in making sure the player dies as much as possible before reaching the end. They also have a fascination with leaving you in the dark when it comes to plot details. This was the case with the action-RPG Demon’s Souls and its spiritual successor Dark Souls. With the release of Bloodborne – yet another spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls – this fascination seems to ...

Hunter of the shadows is rising... 0

I cant remember what got me into Demon's Souls in the first place but the idea of a 3D action game reminiscent of the Zelda games of that time but more moodier, atmospheric and "hardcore" seemed intriguing enough to pick up and at best give it a shot. While initially hating the esoteric and challenging experience, eventually I caught the bug and Demon's Souls, even to this day, competes for my 5th slot in "5 favorite games of all time". Flash forward 7 years and we're now at Bloodborne, technic...
