Overview
BreakThru (not to be confused with the 1994 puzzle game of the same name) is a side-scrolling vehicular action game developed and released by Data East for arcades in 1986.
Players drive a high-tech assault vehicle as they "break thru" enemy lines by avoiding obstacles, attacking with a forward-facing cannon, and making incredible high-speed jumps. The game includes five levels (Mountain, Bridges, Prairie, City, and Airport, or "Aircraft"), with the overall goal of recovering the player's stolen aircraft PK430 from enemy forces.
Along with third-party ports to numerous home computers at the time, the game received a first-party port to the Nintendo Entertainment System on November 1987 exclusively in North America.
The arcade version of the game later received a digitally re-release by Flying Tiger Entertainment for the Nintendo Switch on November 8, 2018, as part of the Johnny Turbo's Arcade series.
Gameplay
The player can use their forward cannon to remove obstacles in their way, or leap over them with the car's impressive jump. For the jump to get better clearance, the player must speed up, though this also makes it harder to shoot/avoid hazards in the road. Occasionally, there are otherwise impassable barricades like landslides that the player needs to a high speed jump to clear. The levels include "Mountain", "Bridge", "Prairie", "City" and "Airport" (or "Recover the Aircraft"). After completing the game, the player starts over at the level of their choice.
