    Overview

Burning Angels is a vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up exclusive to the PC Engine. It features two ships: the Dragon and the Phoenix (styled as "Phenix" in-game), each with their own pilot. The player can choose to play as either ship - each has their own distinct ultimate attack - or two players can play simultaneously with both.

As with many 16-bit shoot 'em ups, the player can acquire power-ups by shooting down certain enemies, and will lose those power-ups once hit by enemy fire. The player's ship can take numerous hits before finally being destroyed, which ends the game. In the two-player mode, only one player has to be destroyed for the game to be over.

The game was best known in its era for its scantily-clad female pilots who feature prominently throughout the game in cutscenes. The two are deliberately reminiscent of the tough mercenary heroines of the anime Dirty Pair.
