Damn it Reznor.
CoD: blops =/= Quake
Game » consists of 19 releases. Released Nov 13, 2012
Reznor eh, sounds a bit like Reznov. A perfect match?
...I don't know what I'm talking 'bout, I can't really decide anything about this before I hear more of the soundtrack.
What? That's crazy. Next you'll be telling me Paul McCartney is going to be working on the next Halo game!
Seriously, though, this thread is super misleading. Trent is only writing the main theme, with Jack Wall--of Mass Effect fame--writing the rest of the score.

Oh yeah. Sometimes I forget that they're not the same anymore.

Between the soundtracks for Quake and The Social Network, I'm MORE than okay with this news!
If you're not already aware of the fact, you should know that Trent also did the three disc soundtrack for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
And again, it's just the main theme with Black Ops 2.

My first thought was that day and COD don't rhyme, so that doesn't work. That quickly gave way to an "ah, I see what you did there" kind of moment.
That's cool, but I sure hope it's something a little different as the last few things he's put out all sound the same... Oh man, that's not gonna happen at all is it.
I don't see famous artists putting much passion in game music. Not to the level of TV and Movies.
Recent example was last SOCOM had Bear McCreary who did a pretty average job that wasn't near what he did for Battlestar. Still.... budget and exposure is huge on CoD so maybe Reznor will care a bit more.

CODfuckers! CODfuckers incorporated!
It's not even like all the ones that actually work have been taken.
There is no COD up in the sky tonight.
It won't give up, it wants me dead, and COD damn this noise inside my head.
Put my faith in COD, and my trust in you, now there's nothing more fucked up I could do.
HEY COD! I believed your promises, your promises and lies.
And last but not least...
COD is dead, and no one cares.
I think this is cool if hes actually interested which is up for debate but if he puts effort in then COD will sound great. Like alot of people I hope that COD BO 2 does something different and deviates from the standard COD offering because this one at least on the surface level seems different enough.
I think they're really overselling Reznor's involvement in this thing. He's composing the theme, it's the same amount of work that Korn did for Haze, and yet trailers and other PR videos make out like he's scoring the entire game.

Reznor's gamertag is NineInchBluntsxxx420. No surprise he's doing the soundtrack.
Kind of a lame joke. I assume you're not a fan?
So, did anyone get it? I assumed (foolish me) that for the crazy amount of money the hardened edition cost, it would actually include a physical soundtrack CD. Boy am I naive or what?
So now I've got this coin with a code, but apparently, if you use the code from your xbox, there's no way to download the soundtrack. You have to use the code at the website callofduty.com/blackops2ce, but if you use it in one place, you can't use it in the other ("invalid code"), so you either get the soundtrack on your PC, or the Exclusive Weapon Camo, Zombies Themed Player Card Background, and Nuketown 2025 Player Card Background on your 360. You can't do both.
I'm curious to know if this download is offered in any lossless format, 'cuz if it's just a bunch of mp3s, I can imagine Trent (and to a lesser extent Jack Wall) being mighty pissed about it. Trent can't stand compressed audio formats, which is one reason why I love him so much.
Edit: Nope. Not only not lossless, but rather badly encoded mp3s. This sucks, not at all what I was led to believe we were getting.
You've gotta be fucking kidding me. The Russian release of the hardened edition came with the soundtrack on 2 physical CDs. So the only people so far who got what was advertised are the russians. What a world. I'm downloading a FLAC rip of it now. I hope this is legit, but for the moment, I've seen enough people confirming it that it seems to be true...
@Nightriff
Well, I dunno. It seems like Trent was only really involved with the main theme song, and it sounds kind of like a generic NIN instrumental, maybe something that could have been left off of The Fragile because it wasn't quite interesting enough...or maybe Ghosts, I dunno. I'm sure you've heard it already, so you can decide.
The rest of it is similarly typical Jack Wall stuff. I recognize the feel from Mass Effect in a lot of places. Some of it is almost as catchy to listen to on it's own as the Mass Effect soundtracks, but I dunno.
A standout track for me is Track 19, the Anthem remix done by Brian Tuey. Also, track 15, Nino Precioso with the spanish guitar and Kamar de los Reyes on vocals is kind of a neat change of pace. (The orchestral version of the same track near the end, track 23 on CD 2, or track 48 of the download, just strikes me as cheesy though)
The recording of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 In G minor which opens CD 2 (or track 26) is a pretty competent performance. Dunno who that was, but it sounds pretty sweet. I'm curious about where in the game it's used. ;)
Some of the tracks are hilariously bad. The Invasion of Panama for example, with spanish guitar, orchestra stabs, and a techno bassline, is downright silly, IMHO.
All in all, much of it makes good background music, but it's not something I can imagine myself listening to often. I'd rather listen to Trent's latest project/band How To Destroy Angels, personally.
Oh, and if you can find a FLAC of the 2 CD version that came with the russian edition of the game, it has around 4 kHz more spectrum than the mp3s, and sounds a lot crisper, but is yet another victim of the loudness wars, so there's little improvement in dynamic range.
That's my take on it so far, but I'm only on my second listen-through now, so YMMV.
