    The Capcom "Platinum list" of million sellers is pretty interesting

    What I find most interesting is how dominated this is by modern games. You think of Capcom's heyday as being the NES/NES/PSX eras, but Street Fighter II and Resident Evil 2 are the only games from those eras in the top 10, and the rest of the list is dominated by more modern games. Whether that's because of digital sales and the like I don't know, but even though the games industry has gotten bigger the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were monstrously popular platforms and it's surprising to me that we don't see games from there on this list.

    I also expected a lot more Mega Man. I was legitimately shocked to see that the Mega Man Legacy Collection outsold Mega Man X. Now I'm sure Mega Man X earned more revenue given how much more it cost, but I think of that game as a monster hit, and it sold just over a million units.

    In general it shows that even though Capcom has been a major publisher forever they've never had a true monster breakout hit. Animal Crossing New Horizons has outsold their top 3 games, and let's not even get started on something like GTA V.

    It also shows how ridiculous expected sales numbers are for a lot of games these days. I think Tomb Raider failed to hit expectations after selling 3.4 million units, but that would put it in the top 20 for Capcom all time. Top 20! For Capcom! That's pretty good!

    Sort of sad to see the sales data behind the rise and fall of the Dead Rising series (at least 3 did better than I thought but then again it was a launch game)

    I'm pretty surprised at how low RE4 (and its re-releases) are on this list considering how influential and well liked it's been. The leap that Monster Hunter's popularity had with MHW is also really something.

    @slag: Street Fighter V is an example of a game that I think has had a long digital tail, and may have sold many copies at below retail. It's been out and supported for a very long time and been on sale for pretty cheap at various times. Doesn't mean the number isn't higher than expected (I was also kind of surprised) but it's not directly comparable to Street Fighter II on SNES (especially because they are only counting one version of Street Fighter V, which is also why I would think Street Fighter IV isn't higher than it.)

    RE4 = 2.3 + 2.1 + 2.0 + 1.6 + 1.4 + 1.2 = 10.6 million total copies sold over all platforms.

    RE4 is 2nd overall, behind Monster Hunter: World.

    I wonder if RE4's limited sales on the original release were due to being cramped by the Gamecube install base. I dunno how many people owned a Gamecube but, gut feeling, I doubt the demographics of that audience matched up very cleanly with RE4.

    Capcom should combine their two best selling franchises! Take the horror style third- or first-person shooting of Resident Evil and combine it with the dinosaurs of Monster Hunter.

    They can call it...Dino Crisis!

    (I promise to buy it Capcom)

    I kind of hate this list. First, some games have their multiplatform releases combined whereas others do not. The clearest example has to be Street Fighter II, which by its own admission, has different versions and updates worth considering as separate releases. BUT, when you combine all of those releases together, and consider the arcade releases, most estimates put Street Fighter II selling around 15 million software units worldwide and when you combine all of its versions together, it has grossed over $10 billion in total revenue.

    The same sentiment applies to Resident Evil 4. Also it is important to note, judging arcade games by individual unit sales in terms of "success" does an entire era of the industry a disservice.

    @zombiepie: I don't think any of the games have multiplatform releases combined unless they were the same SKU released on multiple platforms (simultaneous release, or slightly staggered.) Games that are split off by platform were technically different SKUs.

    The list also clearly does not deal with arcade games, which you wouldn't do in a list by unit sales. A list by revenue (preferably normalized for inflation) would be more interesting, but this is an investor relations list so they wouldn't do that (and they have incentive to prop up modern titles and have as many games as possible on the list.)

    So yeah the list isn't perfect, but it has a lot of interesting information. Like the fact that the PS4 re-release of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen outsold the original vanilla game in terms of units. And Ghost 'N Goblins NES outsold Mega Man 2, which is wild considering the respective qualities of those games.

    As for Street Fighter II...it's complicated as to whether it's a game or a subfranchise. There were so many versions released across such a long time that I think it's legitimate to see it either way. I've always seen it as its own kind of franchise, since many of the later versions were more different from the original version than one year's King of Fighters game was to the next, so it's hard for me to really view it as a single game.
