Any mainstream game list of hardest games always lists contra but I personally blasted through both contra and super c mastering both in a matter of a couple days each. Castlevania on the other hand took a couple weeks to get down and I just 1cc completed the second loop for the first time today. I even found the first loop significantly more difficult than either of the aforementioned contra games. Am I just odd or is castlevania really that hard? It seems to me it doesn't get the recognition it deserves as it's one of the hardest games I've played in a long time.
P.S. I will say though that hardest game lists are bogus or they would just be made up of things like Donpachi.

Is it just me or is Castlevania 1 Really really hard?
I'm really the only retro fan on Giantbomb from what I see lying in these forums.
I don't think most teens today can even get past the first screen in Megaman 1 (cutman's stage) let alone get past the first wave of Medusa heads in Castlevania 1.
Yeah. It's hard. Because, like most NES games of that era, it's kind of bullshit. You know, like how you can't control the trajectory of your jump, or the way that when you touch enemies you get thrown back, probably off a cliff? Yeah. It's hard. Also @groin said:

I bet you haven't even played Castlevania 1, you probably think Lords of Shadow is the first one in the series.

The biggest problem is a problem many old games had. Things like reappearing sprites and my most hated old school game pet peeve, the uncontrollable back track your character does when getting hit. Does wonders when you are trying to make a tight jump and get hit my a Medusa head. But with that said, I love all Castlevania, even the N64 one.
" Now I remember why I hate forums and don't make a habit of posting on them. "Sorry 'bout that. There was the dude. And we had to tell him to leave. He's gone now, so we can still talk about Castlevania. It's hard, right?
" @L0ki said:Yep, pretty darn hard. I'm not an expert though, so I can't really rank it in terms of difficulty with other entries in the series. Though, I will say that the difficulty in general is more skill-based than that of Castlevania II, which asked the player to intuit absurd, obfuscated requirements in order to progress." Yeah, it's pretty goddamn hard. I would say it's the most legitimately difficult game int he series (Simon's Quest was designed to need a Nintendo Power magazine to complete).
I always thought Castlevania 1 was one of the big reasons why the "Nintendo Hard" stereotype exists. It's a really tough game. I like hard games but... hard platformers always make me ragequit. I got to level 5 ONE TIME and it kicked my keester back to 8th gen noobville where it apparently belongs.
I love Castlevania's challenge but I just get frustrated after a while that I keep having to restart the game.
I have the first Castlevania on my Wii. Never got past the second level though, damn Medusa heads...
I may play it again since this thread reminded me I have the game.
