Short for Simulated Adaptive Matrix, SAM is an artificial intelligence designed by Alec Ryder himself. From the SAM Node in Hyperion, he receives a direct feed of the Pathfinder's sensory input: he sees and feels as Ryder does, providing them with advanced situational awareness, problem solving, and tactical enhancements. All members of the Pathfinder team receive implants, allowing them to communicate directly with SAM.

Macen Barro was the designated Pathfinder aboard the ark Natanus. Upon arrival in the Heleus Cluster, the Natanus struck the Scourge, causing massive damage to the ship and multiple casualties among the turian occupants. Macen died while attempting to transfer his SAM to his second-in-command, ex-Spectre, security officer and significant other, Avitus Rix.

Avitus Rix is a turian ex-Spectre who was handpicked to join the Andromeda Initiative by Pathfinder Macen Barro as his second-in-command. Avitus served the Citadel Council for 15 years as a Spectre before retiring. His main reason for his resignation was due to Saren Arterius's betrayal, as he was the one who recruited Avitus to the Spectres in the first place.
