I know most CS players have years of experience and will headshot me from across de_dust as soon as the match begins, so do you bombers have any general tips for a new kid? My shooter experience is limited to TF2 and Borderlands (which basically doesn't count.)

Don't play Counter-Strike

Don't get discouraged. Like you said, there are people playing that have been at it for years and are amazing, but you kind of just have to take it as it comes. You could also try deathmatch servers, I find them to be good for getting used to the different weapons and working on your aim.

Play deathmatch, or gun game, or something with instant respawn till you get used to how the weapons work, and how the recoil works. I tend to like shooting at the chest and let the recoil move up to the head, but that doesn't always work. Also the game has very temperamental hit boxes that you should get used to, then jump into the round based CS. Just don't think of it like COD, as tempting as it is. Play more tactically.

Shoot enemy players in the head. ASAP.

You are braver than I am. Games like this and League of Legends are about the most hardcore games I can think of.

I haven't played it in years, but from what I can remember: Figure out which weapons/items are best for you and stick with them. Always remember to check your corners and never hammer the trigger button. Learn how to throw grenades around corners, because that'll give you an advantage, and learn which levels have what vantage points. Other than that, stay crouched when you see an enemy, aim for the head, and don't think when you have the shot, just shoot. And don't ever run out into the open, windows are your enemy too, halls are good choke points, but only if you have a team who can cover the areas behind you. Maps are designed to be symmetrical so you have to learn to cover your ass. Oh and never stay in the same place for too long.

Duel pistols are handy too.

The two most important things I've learned about playing CS are:

Don't spray your weapon (unless you are close range with an SMG). By spraying you are dramatically reducing your chance to hit anything. Tap the trigger until the enemy dies

When you need to take a shot, plant your feet when you shoot. Any movement with the rifles will kill your accuracy. You can still move around to avoid being hit, but when you are pulling the trigger, you should be stationary for the split second you fire.

Sneaking can be your friend. Walking or crouching about makes you silent and it's pretty amazing how well you can discern where someone is by their footsteps.

I would say gun-game would be a good way to start, and it would give you a feel for most of the weapons.

• Turn down your mouse sensitivity to as low as you can stand. This will give you more fine control to aim for the head (and always try to aim for the head).
• Use very controlled bursts or even tap to single fire at a distance. A headshot from an AK-47 should take someone out in one hit, so it's worth it to stop, crouch, line up your shot and single fire to get that one good hit.
• Play on all the maps, a lot. Unfortunately this one takes time, but you need to learn the maps (and particularly, where you expect to engage enemies).
• Similar to above: if you know where an enemy is going to come, you're going to have an advantage if you stay put and aim for where his head is about to pop out (this is how people get the really high kill counts). It's an asshole move to camp weird places where people usually don't go, but it's normal to camp bomb sites, hostages, and high-traffic routes.
• Don't get caught in a loop where you're buying a cheap SMG every round. Buy nothing, or just a Desert Eagle to save money for a better weapon the next time (and if you're going a pistol or "save" round, try to stick with a buddy to pick up a weapon that drops).

I used to play a lot of CS: Source and agree with all the above. One thing I'll add is that most of the time you want to be quiet. Walk around and crouch a lot. It's easy to hear people running and you don't want the enemy to know you're running.

For aiming most of the time I just bought a Deagle and picked up new guns from enemys. It teaches you to aim and not sure pray and spray. 3 shots anywhere and some will die and there are head shots. Bullet also seems to go where you shoot. It's a terrorist weapon though, so you'll have to be on that team to buy it.
