So, I haven't done a formal blog in a long while and I figured I'd try get back into that. You know, spreading bread based nonsense.

Crusader Kings 2: Damn You, England!

If you read my Game of the Year blog post you may have noticed that I think Crusader Kings 2 is a great game, albeit for crazy people, but a great game nonetheless.  I had been getting into Europa Universalis 3, though bingeing may be the more appropriate term, when I revisited the Crusader Kings 2 Quick Look. Upon doing some research into the game, which included watching bits and pieces of various Let's Plays online and checking out the game's forums here on Giant Bomb, I decided to take the plunge into Crusader Kings 2.

I began my first campaign as part of a non-unified Ireland, since I read that this was the best area for a beginner. As I began to get into the groove of things I slowly made some moves to take over different regions and was able to unite Ireland as a single country, with me as their illustrious leader. How unfortunate for them. Now this was where I had a realization of sorts; I can do whatever I want. That's what is great about games such as Europa and Crusader Kings. There is no set path or set in stone objectives that the player must adhere to. It's all about personal accomplishments.

My Irish kingdom began modestly, I've taken Iceland, remaining mostly inwardly focused, but I have begun to encroach upon Scotland. So far I've taken over only about three or four provinces, but goddamn England is messing up my plans! As these sorts of games are deeply historical, here is a general pro tip; Do. Not. Fuck. With. England. So at the moment I am sort of at an impasse as to what my next move will be, but I feel like I've spent enough time playing this campaign that I sort of want to wage war on England and see how horribly that goes.

If you're semi-interested in the general craziness that Crusader Kings 2 can offer, definitely check it out. Especially now. Thanks to the ongoing Steam sale.

New Year's Eve with Deer Tick

I don't know if anyone here on Giant Bomb is a fan of Deer Tick, but they are a fucking great band. I saw them earlier this year and was lucky enough to see them on New Year's Eve, for a second time. My group and I arrived just at the perfect time and we were able to get a standing area right in front of the stage. The show was great and was a hell of a way to ring in the new year. Check out their stuff and the pictures below. I recorded some video, but since I was standing right next to a speaker it is nothing more than a rattling booming noise. I am glad I have these pictures to remember the concert because the rest of the night was a drunken haze.

Anyway, I'm keeping this one rather short. Mostly because I haven't really been playing anything of note. I do however have a sneaking urge to play Fez and go down that rabbit hole.

I'm going down the same general path, though I feel like it's taking forever, even for a game that is supposed to feel like it's taking forever. I'm at almost a hundred years in and all I've done is unite Ireland, take (all but one county of) Brittany, and one county of Scotland. I'm just waiting for the Holy Roman Empire to eat me up.

Somehow my current ruler has managed to get a weak claim on England. All of it! I love it when random stat-based marriages end up with crazy claims down the line. I'm not going to act on that, though, because fuck is England big.

Too long; didn't read: Crusader Kings 2 is rad as fuck.

@HaltIamReptar: I've been arranging marriages of my ruler's children throughout France and I have a claim there, but I am in no way going to even attempt taking on France. I think I am going to continue to make progress into Scotland, but the way my game played out Scotland is being carved out by England, France, and Sicily.  I'm eager to start an entirely new campaign and play as a vassal or a lesser ranked member of a kingdom. This game is a whole lot of maddening fun.

@Breadfan:France is falling apart from the inside out for me. Rebellions, hostile countries, Muslims, HRE. I don't think there will be a France in ten years time. Your Scotland is being taken by Sicily? Jeepers. Alternate history is crazy.

I understand that from a real world point of view, just taking a castle isn't going to make an entire empire give it up, but it does kind of discourage expansion when you have to face and beat the wrath of god just to expand even just a little. I suppose I got to get my marriage tactics down better. Though I will say, it is a wondrous feeling to see a kingdom fall into a civil war when you have a claim on one of its counties. That's how I managed to take Brittany - every time somebody would rebel in England, I would make my move.

It's embarrassing how many days I've looked at the clock and went, "Oh. It's morning now." Love this game.

@HaltIamReptar: My Irish campaign finally came to an end. I got into a territory war with England, but was eventually overthrown from within. Even as I saw my empire fall to rubble, all I could think was: "Goddamn. I love this game".

Unified Ireland, but the time it took gave Norway time to conquer England Wales and half of Scotland. So much for my Britannia empire this game.
