So this isn't that surprising right? After the launch of the game numbers have dropped off significantly. I might check it out now seeing as it's free on PS3. Here is the story and it's below for those not wanting to click:

If the proposition of buying DC Universe Online and then paying a monthly fee has been keeping you away from Sony Online Entertainment's MMO, prepare to enter Gotham City next month. In October, DC Universe Online goes free to play.

Both PlayStation 3 and PC players will be able to download and play the game for free. Three tiered levels will act as the game's revenue source from there along with in-game microtransactions. Here's the official breakdown from SOE.

Free
New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

Premium
Any player who has spent at least $5 (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

Legendary
Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

If you've already paid for a PC lifetime subscription or a PS3 plan, that deal still stands when this switch happens in late October. This event also marks the end of DCUO's auto-renew feature. In the past, the game would automatically resubscribe you when your subscription lapsed. That's over now – a result of the more than 40 percent of people who quit EverQuest II and complained about the auto-renew in a SOE survey.

Neat, I had heard that the servers were really barren these days so adding the F2P option will automatically increase numbers. This and Star Trek Online seem to be the two biggies going F2P this fall. I wonder, what is still out there besides WOW that isn't F2P? Rifts and Eve Online are the only ones that come to mind.

Nice, I'll at least give it a try. I've been playing Star Trek Online lately and really loving it, despite a lot of negative feedback it's had. Though that's likely something to do with me being a massive Star Trek fan.

well that was fast. Might actually play it again for a bit, i really enjoyed the month i played when i bought it, some neat ideas, and i loved the character creator (i thought the one in champions online was too overwhelming)

Nice! I sort of liked it on PS3, but I got tired paying for it on a monthly basis. I might actually give it some burn now.

WoW still having a monthly fee has nothing to do with Activision.

Might jump back into this now then - it was good, but I couldnt justify paying a monthly fee for it.

I wonder if the Premium model will work with people who bought the game but only played the free month? I guess you'd probably count as a 'former subscriber', although you didn't REALLY subscribe. I dunno, I guess you had to technically subscribe to gain your free month?

Will this be the first big free to play game on the PS3, if so it will be interesting to see how it does on consoles.

Probably going to give it a go on PS3, never really been able to play MMO's before.

For those who played it is it PVP intensive? because I don't like that very much, I prefer coop.

The FAQ on the site states if you have ever previously subscribed (including the 30 days included with buying the game), you will automatically be a "Premium Access" level player.

Honestly, I thought DCUO was worth a subscription, as playing the game was good fun. However, there was a severe issue with lack of content at launch. They said that you're supposed to choose your origin and stick with it, however it was impossible to do only Tech origin(batman) quests and level up to max, you always had to jump over toe Meta(Superman) quests to fill in the gaps. (With that said, the content that was included was very good)

From what I've heard, that's changed a lot in the last few months, so I had considered going back. I guess I'll be able to check it out next month.

I'll be down to play with some GB members on PS3. We have to set up which sever and side we are going to play on.

Wow, at first I was like, well I'd like to try it but my PC aint so hot, gave my newly built one to my bro since he was going off to college. But I forgot its on PS3 so I will download that get to see if my SSJBatman69 can make it in that world.

I'll be more than happy to pop this in again once it goes free. It's not the greatest game but it has its appeal, especially without the monthly fee.

Its too bad that they couldn't make the game worthwhile enough to charge a monthly for it. But perhaps in a post WoW world this is the only option.

I fully believe that the age of subscription based MMOs is over. And BioWare thinks that The Old Republic is going to sustain itself as a subscription based MMO...

I might get back into it if people are actually going to be playing it.
