Also known as Kongou Zaou Bosatsu, Zaou Gongen was a Buddhist deity worshipped by a Japanese sect known as Shugendou. The term "gongen" refers to the idea that foreign bodhisattvas were manifesting locally as kami to guide the Japanese to true salvation.
