    Diablo II

Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Jun 29, 2000

The sequel to Blizzard's popular action-RPG features a larger and more varied world, new playable classes, and expanded skill trees. Even moreso than its predecessor, Diablo II would provide a blueprint followed by many later RPGs and action games.

    Diablo II

    Setting

The demonic and undead roam sanctuary once again seeking to instill destruction and chaos to the land.  In Diablo 2 just like its predecessor continues to bring you the action filled click fest that makes it so fun.  Sanctuary is under attack from hell's spawn.  You play as a hero that must trace the dark wanderers path to find out what new evil is stirring about.  Traveling through randomly generated dungeons and environments to stop hell from claiming power over sanctuary again.

    Synopsis

Diablo 2 is an action rpg that is played from an isometric viewing angle.  You control a character that has different powers and abilities to fight hordes of enemies to gain experience, do quests, and gain items.  Levels are randomly generated in the world as well as items.

The player picks from a selection of 5 distinct classes:  Barbarian, Amazon, Sorceress, Paladin, and Necromancer to do your adventuring with.  Each class has a unique flavor to them and offers different gameplay.  Barbarians dish out heavy handed melee combat to its foes and the Sorceress uses her powers to manipulate the elements to defeat hers.  Necromancers command an army of the undead. Paladins, the holy warriors, use magic to strike physical damage to its enemies and aid fellow players by boosting their abilities and stats.  Rounding out the classes is a ranged attack character called the Amazon, that can use a bow as well as a javelin.

Each character gains experience as they go through each of the 5 acts.  As they gain levels their respective character will be able to unlock dozens of new skills and improve ones they have already attained.  Cast fire from above, raise skeletons to fight for you, increase everyones damage by 200%, and teleport out of harms way of your opponents.  These are only a few of the powers and abilities of your characters.  Every time you level up you will also get to invest in stats:
    Strength, Dexterity, Life, and Mana.

Gear, Gear, and Gear.  The Diablo franchise thrives on this and does it well.  Each piece of equipment that drops modifies your stats, defense, damage, even increases your chances of finding more items, or other countless "boosters".  "Rare" items can drop and will have random modifiers making each rare truly different.  This makes the game somewhat addicting as some would call it a "slot machine" mentality.  Theres always one more item that is better to find to uprgrade your character.  Balancing decisions whether to have more damage or a weapon that does less damage but steals life everytime you hit an enemy.  There are also items in the game called "uniques" that have static special modifiers that are very poweful.

The one draw back is where do you put all this stuff?  A limited grid system (think Tetris) that makes up your inventory.  Picking gear up is a hassle deciding one item over another.  Even with a chest in town to store items in the inventory system lacks enough room
.  Adding to your frustration is finding out someone else got an item that dropped that you wanted because your inventory was full.  It breaks the action too when you have to stop to reorganize your inventory constantly.  Sharing items between different characters you made is also a frustrating chore.  Unless you have a trusted friend.

Single player is fine and good but multiplayer is where its at.  Being able to play with other people really opens the game up.  Certain skills your characters have will benefit people you are allied with.
You can use eachothers abilities together to make you more powerful.  A team working together will earn you more experience which makes it a rewarding and fun experience.  With the randomly generated dungeons and items, numerous difficulties, and multiplayer this game is replayable for years.

Diablo II is a lot like Clint Eastwood: Pretty old (in game years) but still active and with a large fanbase! Who ever thought that a game that runs on sprites would still be widely played in an age where games come mostly in 3D? What's so great about 600x400!?Diablo II is the continuation of the saga's previous installment, the pioneer RPG Diablo. The entire system that defines the characters is quite remarkable for such a game: 150 skills among 5 classes, and an item generating system that mak...
