A sad and unfortunate outcome due to time constraints:

"Today, we wanted to let you know that we’ve made the difficult decision to hold back the PvP Arena system and release it in a patch following the game’s launch. After a lot of consideration and discussion, we ultimately felt that delaying the whole game purely for PvP would just be punishing to everyone who’s waiting to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content, all of which is just about complete."

For me the PvP was the best thing about Diablo 3 at Blizzcon 2011. I had a blast, blasting other players with the Wizard. (not to mention all the other classes) I often wondered how the PvP system was going to work in the fill game. Would we have some kind of match making system? Would we be able to play anything besides level 60 characters? Well it seems at least some of my questions are answered.

"When the PvP patch is ultimately ready, it will add multiple Arena maps with themed locations and layouts, PvP-centric achievements, and a matchmaking system that will help you and your team get into fairly matched games quickly and easily. We’ll also be adding a personal progression system that will reward you for successfully bashing in the other team’s skulls."

I really enjoy the beta and have logged more then 200 hours of game time over the course of about 3 months. If the the whole game is as good or better I am sure to spend hundreds if not thousands of hours playing something Jay Wilson has a lot of confidence in.

"We’re in the process of putting the finishing touches on what we think is a truly epic campaign and co-op experience for launch."

I look forward to the game when it comes out, and I will look forward to the PvP. Look for a release date announcement in the next few weeks.

Is that because console networks don't allow Battle.net?

    @Aurelito:

The console version is going to be release long after the PC version. So this move has nothing to do with Battle.net and consoles.

OK, no big, whatever, put the game out already, I'll play it on any platform regardless.

But I can't help asking, wtf have they been doing for the past 11 or so years? LOL, I guess Blizz has their own unique dev cycle and schedule priorities.

Had no plans to participate in the PvP anyway. It's much more difficult to balance PvP in a game like this than in other kinds. PvP in Diablo II was basically a joke.

I have a feeling this is Activision's doing and not Blizzard, Blizzard would take 20 years to finish this if they had to, I ain't complaining though.

@pweidman: From 2001 to 2005 Blizzard North was working on the game. They got to a point where Blizzard didn't like the game so they canned it as well as everyone at Blizzard North. In 2006 the project was started a new with a brand new team. So they have only been working on this version for the last 6 years. Yeah I know "ONLY 6 Years?!?!" but hey thats a lot shorter then 11.

Yep, this. The thought of matchmaking for Diablo PvP is honestly baffling.

Seems to me then that Guild Wars 2 has a neat little window it can release in.

It'd be funny if they released it as paid dlc.

    No actually it probably wouldn't.

Maybe it'll just be Day One DLC.

@Krakn3Dfx: With what he said I it's obvious that the PvP will not be day one DLC

"we hope you’ll find some consolation in the fact that soon, you’ll be having a blast leveling characters, finding items, learning the classes, and perfecting builds…and that when the Arenas do arrive, you’ll be all the better prepared for battle."

I am going to guess 4 months after release we will get the PvP add on.
