the last Earth Defense Force game on the 360 is one of my favorite guilty gaming pleasures. i mean come on, you could hit a giant ant into the stratosphere with a shotgun from like a mile away or blow up an entire building with one volley from a grenade launcher. its ridiculous!

Does New Detroit have Juggalos?
EDIT: I have to give the new developer the benefit of the doubt; I love EDF too much (non-ironically).
"RELOAD FAILED"...I still don't completely understand why the AI ever says this(especially since the main character never has to reload manually).
I think'd I'd be more worried if they got a "good" developer in to make the game, can you imagine EDF as created by Epic or Valve? That would be awful; I think the fact that they went with a B studio is the right choice for a B game and if Sandalot can't/won't make it that this lot are as good as any.
There are a few things they can do to make this a worthy sequal:
- ridiculous number of weapons, of which half should be useless but awesome, ie rockets that are slower than you
- no characters, just random npc's shouting nonsence
- insects, spiders, robots and ufo's
- no attempt at trying to explain why insects and spiders are fighting alongside giant robots and ufo's
The only thing that needs to be different from the original is the frame-rate, the achievements and maybe vehicles which you can actually use.
I hope that means Sandlot are working on bringing their Wii game over from Japan. It's Nintendo published so they must like it over there.
I've never hated on Kessler before but seriously what the fuck. "Love ironically?" Maybe it was just, y'know, really goddamn fun to play?
Fuck you EDF wasn't broken. Well except for the vehicle parts... still, I love the hell out of that game. Where else in the video game medium can you fight giant ants constantly. NOWHERE.
It's hard to make a "so bad it's good" game, much harder than to make a similar movie. I'm kinda skeptical about a sequel because, much like with movies, if you're TRYING to make something cheesy/corny/so bad it's good, usually it just turns out bad.
Really looking forward to taking on giant insects and skyscrapers a like. 2017 was the best dumb-fun I may have ever had.
If this game doesn't have the Pale-Wing then it's not worth playing.
Very few people know that EDF was actually a remake of the first game of the series, which was released on the PS2 and exclusive to Japan. The second game of the series, Global Defence Force, takes place chronologically after EDF did and featured a jetpacking, magical energy flinging, anime robot girl. Alas, it only came out in Japan and Europe, and never had a grassroots internet campaign to boost sales. But it was awesome. It was better than EDF 2017 by a large margin.
The first game was a glorious celebration of all that irony and fun, who needs grey cover based 3rd person shooters when you have EDF. It's a game that you either "get" or you don't, whatever the sequal turns out like it's a 1st day purchase for me, although I am entirely in agreement with Matt's thoughts on whether this US studio is up to the task of Defending the earth. Still high hopes and co-op is always gd (as long as split-screen is still in their)
Slight concern about their choice to set it in one city though, really hope it has the depth and variety of levels the original had (maybe minus the damn tunnels, they got old fast).
EDF!
EDF!
EDF!
:)
I'm happy for you guys that dig these games, but I can't fucking stand them. Shitty controls ruin every video game experience for me. Plus, somebody said it best when they referred to each level as a "grind"--something else I hate in games. But if you dudes really love this stuff, hey, have fun.
It's like an EDF version of Final Fantasy. Weepy face indeed if it stays in Japan.
God I hope this means some sort of re-release for the original.
My old 360 gouged the disc and I've been looking for a replacement for ages.
" A sequel to the best game on the 360. Yes please... "Aint that the fucking truth, that game owns!
When the first Earth Defense Force 2017 came out me and my roommate played it for hours and hours for weeks on end. Eventually we got to a series of levels where they were all randomly generated underground tunnels with a single texture covering everything. We'd constantly get lost in the tunnels and find ourselves back at the entrance multiple times due to the lack of any direction or playability. We eventually got stuck on one level for the last time and gave up. But we loved those ridiculous guns that would increase in ridiculousness with every level.
I watched a couple of gameplay trailers for this and am now very skeptical.. I loved edf 2017 but the new game looks like it's trying to actually be serious, which seems like a mistake. Just listening to the voices in the new game made me sadface ... but then again, I really hate the voice for Cyrus in Dawn of War 2... dunno why developers seem to think it's a great voice.
here it is...
