Is it just me, or is the sound mix on this quite weird? I'm having a bit of trouble hearing the flavour dialogue and such over the music. I don't want any opinions or any of that bullshit on the quailty of the VA or whatever in itself, just the actual mix. For the most, it's superb, but sometimes in the field, the sound seems a bit quiet on character chatter. Anyone else have this?

It can be. The volume is determined by your distance from the character speaking. I just decided to turn on the subtitles for all that stuff.

Yeah, it's classed as 'non-event subtitles' if you want to change that dialogue specifically.
