Only problem with that is back when Dan was apart of Game Informer he and someone else made a video about about the Dreamcast Berserk game and he hated it. The catch is that the game is set around the middle point of the story, therefore he was pissed that the game wasn't telling him the whole story.

But he has already shown great appreciation for some anime. Like the anime game series, Metal Gear Solid.

GitS isn't even that out there. most of it is pretty straight laced and grounded, even though it's all cybernetics and rampant AI's. i wouldn't really compare it to MGS (from what i know of it). still very worth dan's time, but i'd never force him to like something he doesn't want to like.

In all honesty I feel like the amount of nudity in Ghost of the Shell would only further Dan's preconceptions of anime fans being creepy 'dorks'.

Why hasn't every answer been Black Lagoon? They kill a helicopter by ramping a boat up to it.

It's funny, I've been getting anime recommendations from people recently too. Though, I doubt he would be interested in the ones people tell me to watch, like Ouran High School Host Club.

On topic though, while I don't know that Dan would like it, but Steins;Gate is a pretty fantastic anime.

Ghost In The Shell? That seems the most like MGS then any others I could think of. Maybe One Piece too?

Yeah, I have to go with Cowboy Bebop. Ir's a great starter anime, and almost everyone likes it.

It can't sound too Japanese or it will scare him away. He must be eased in slowly. Keep in mind we are talking about a 30 year old man who has yet to try mayonnaise even though he eats Aioli which is made out of mayonnaise. For this reason I nominate "Tank Police" an 80's cop movie that's made out of anime.

Cowboy Bebop?

Probably some shounen show like Hunter X Hunter or Bleach. If he can get through the first couple of episodes he will worship Gurren Lagann forever. Darker than Black seems like a safe bet. Probably Black Lagoon.

Mech shows? I'm kind of not an expert, but he could be a secret Gundam nut.

EDIT: JOJO IS SECONDED! That is a Dan show for sure.

The Big O. It's like anime Bruce Wayne / Batman with big robots. People in my life who don't like anime like Big O.

The Fatal Fury movie is also pretty stupid, but fun. And it's just a movie so it's a small time investment. Again, it seems to bridge the gap between self-professed haters and fans.

I think he'd probably like Golgo 13 both the old movies and the semi-recent tv series, Crying Freeman, and Jormungand just to name a few.

Anyhoo... Something like Gurren Lagann, Full Metal Alchemist, JoJo probably. On the other hand, make him watch Marimite.

I think he'd really like Jojo. People who hate anime for no reason all love Jojo, and also it seems like the kind of thing he'd get lost into really easily if he can get past Jonathan and into the Joseph and beyond stuff.

It's too bad that the DVDs are out of print. I looked up the sets that I bought on ebay and amazon and people are charging too much, or paying too much, for them. I wish they would re-release it and re-air it on Hulu or something. Sailormoon is having a renaissance, why not Big O? :D

Fist of the North Star. It's so manly and awesome that it's even John Cena's favourite anime.

Given his love for wrestling and all things action, I think he would enjoy some shonen.

The problem with series like DBZ or Bleach, is that they take forever to get anywhere interesting.

Something like FMA: Brotherhood or Cowboy Beebop (relatively short shonen series) seems like the safer bet.
