I saw this over on Destructoid first, but I wanted to share it here. Someone has decided to make a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fighting game. The project is still early in development but it looks good. According to the FAQ, there are a few interesting features to look forward to when it eventually arrives provided "the Man" doesn't send out a cease-and-desist for the project. I've listed just a few salient points from the FAQ below.
From the FAQ
Q: How many modes will there be?
A: Story Mode and VS (Local/Online) at Live Release
Q: How many characters are there in the game?
A: We’ve planned for a 17 characters Roster, with the Mane6 playable at Live Release.
Q: Well, then. Will there be a custom-pony maker so we can add our own OCs?
A: Creating a viable custom character maker isn’t as easy as it sounds; It is NOT only creating a “blank” pony and tackling a custom pallete on top; It requires far more resources into developing and technical creation than we can invest on it, and the end result would be most likely unsatisfactory, both for the players and the Devs... Not to mention it’d push back our Live release to end of season 3, or so.
Q: When will this game be released?
A: Appropriating a Blizzard term: Soon. We don’t want to fall into Valve time, where saying “tomorrow”, actually means “somewhere between here and when next the planets align in the shape of Celestia”
Q: What OS will this game run in?
A: Windows is supported. Running the game in Mac through Boot camp might be doable, but it’s not officially supported, as it’s a case-by-case basis.
Q: Is it MUGEN?
A: Nope
Q: What Engine are you based on?
A: Fighter Maker 2002.
Q: Who’s making the Music, then?; Are you reusing music from the show?
A; Yes and no. The Music is inspired by the show. (Daniel Ingram’s music is awesome, after all!), but the tracks themselves are composed and arranged by our Awesome Music Department Duo, formed by:
Q: Will it [voice acting] be straight from the show, or will you be recording new stuff?
A: A small percentage might be from the show, but most of the content will be original.
Q: Who are you guys, anyways?
A: We’re the herdmind compoundknown as the DevTeam, nice to meet you!
Q: Ok, I’m sold. How much will this game cost me?
A: Oh boy. Well, prepare your wallet, because this totally awesome game costs a grand total of $0.00, and it can be... wait... what?... yes, you heard right. Zero dollars and Zero Cents: That is to say. Abso-pony-lutely free.
Q: Will there be an open Alpha/Beta/Demo we can try out?
A: Nope. We’re working at full steam to have the live game release as soon as possible without stepping on the quality, though, so when you get the game on your hands, you’ll get the real deal!
Well, I'm am fully in support of this idea. I've been fascinated by the "brony" movement and have been watching more and more of the show myself lately. When I discovered that it was created by storyboard artist from The Powerpuff Girls, Lauren Faust (and wife to PPG creator Craig McCracken), I took a deeper look at the series. I'm not sure if it's quite as rebellious as that show, but Friendship is Magic certainly has a unique charm to it that transcends its target audience.
