I saw a link on hacker news of the highest earning Patreon campaigns and was surprised to see how well Kinda Funny games is doing. Good for those guys. Between the two Patreon campaigns, they are the number 2 earning group on Patreon, pulling in about 50k a month. Well done, guys. I hope the guys here as doing as well financially.
Kinda funny games pulling it DOWN
@mb: Colin and Greg started kinda funny in January so they've already sustained succes for 7 months and counting. And their subscriptions have gone up, not down, over that time. Their model seems pretty similar to giantbomb to me really.
Who knew animated porn was such a lucrative industry.
japanese tentacle connoisseurs?
@finaldasa: I really doubt it's divided evenly by 4. Colin and Greg are on record that they each made 6 figures at ign.

That sounds insanely high. I don't imagine any of then took on a venture like this without being somewhat prepared that it wouldn't be successful right away. But my overall point is that it sounds like a lot of money but none of them are suddenly wealthy beyond compare.
The fucking state of that list.
"Hi, I'm creating an adult RPG...." ££££££
Number one draws half naked anime and videogame characters.
I mean seriously as an illustrator myself I can appreciate the work that goes into it but 60k a month? That person is certainly talented but that is not 60k a month quality art. Good for them though, it is an artists dream to be able to simply do what you love and get a steady income for it.
@finaldasa: 100,000/year isn't insane wealth if you live in San Francisco, New York, LA, Boston, etc. don't get me wrong, it's definitely comfortable but it isn't living the high life by any means.
@bceagles128: I'm guessing $100k there is worth around what $50-60k is everywhere else. Dude's aren't rich by any means but they ain't hurting, either.
They deserve it, they put out quality content at a rate that rivals this very website.
Personally, the fact that there are people who will pay a hefty monthly fee for illustrated pornography is a stunning revelation, only because there are so many of them. And not to get too political, but the fact that the guys who are "making" The Sarkeesian Effect have more people giving them money than both We Have Concerns and Retronauts is a goddamn travesty.

My favorite tidbit about the horrors of US late capitalism is that L.A.'s recent minimum wage hike isn't even enough to cover the cost of living in any part of Los Angeles County, period.

That 60k guy's art is really damn good looking though, I wish I could draw and use digital media half as well as he could.
I had to look up that second one, and Jesus fucking Christ. I can't believe people are still talking about gamergate like it's relevant anymore, and they actually use "Social Justice Warrior", ugh.
Recently started getting really into their stuff. I honestly never visited IGN because I just flat out didn't like the website, so I didn't really know anything about them outside of Greg Miller's appearance on here.
I've become a big fan, they do quality stuff and I hope it continues to work for them. It will be interesting to see how long Patreon works in general.
I really enjoy a lot of their stuff and it's good to see them doing well. I like the model they have which sits somewhere between the Giant Bomb style subscription and crowdfunding. I think if Patreon does begin to drop off they will ultimately move to exactly the GB model of direct subscriptions. Of course they are also generating income from Youtube/Twitch and podcast sponsors.

meh, Greg Miller is alright in small doses but I can't stand Colin Moriarty.
My thoughts exactly.
I hate this forum post.... only because I've learned that a porn video game is the second highest paid patreon. I'm going to pull a great quote from their patreon page.
"...we want to make a game that is so fun and addictive that you'd want to play it even without all the fucking. That said, the fucking is pretty important to us too."
$34,000 a month people.
@mb: I'm sure those people / groups are smart and wise enough to have another revenue source then just Patreon.
Btw anybody know what Patreon's cut is of the money if any?
meh, Greg Miller is alright in small doses but I can't stand Colin Moriarty.
agreed
Never heard of patreon, but i need to get down on this. 10g+ a month drawing anime boobs? What the fuck have I been doing with my life all this time?
meh, Greg Miller is alright in small doses but I can't stand Colin Moriarty.
That's funny. I've always thought Jeff and Colin were very similar except that one is filled with California stereotypes and the other is filled with East Coast stereotypes.
I dont agree but if its true then Colin is definitely the evil twin.
@sterling: Whyso? If anything, it reminds me of the Giantbomb model. An optional subscription that gets you extra content. Just, democratized and monetized so that it can be 'sold' to other people looking to put out a product over time, and get paid for it.
@reasonableman: I don't know, just something about the whole thing just rubs me the wrong way. It just feels like a bunch of people begging for money so they don't have to get a real job.
Does....does KFG really *need* to be on pateron anymore? Like seriously, they blew up huge and it feels weird and scuzzy to have them on there imo when they don't really need it and the money can be going to someone who really does need it?
Also lmao I wonder how Colin "DON'T TREAD ON ME WELFARE STATE OBUMMER LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT" Moriarty justified this kind of funding to himself. Oh right, it's because it's a handout that benefits *him*.
Sorry, got off-topic there for a moment.
