Shock Troopers on the Vita. Oh lawd! This be the best run and gun shooter I have played and the DNA soundtrack is outstanding to boot!
Last *amazing* game that you played?
Vanguard Bandits or Command and Conquer: Renegade's online. I'm expecting to have this feeling for the new X-Com game coming out in a few weeks.
Mark of the Ninja--I smile ear-to-ear playing that game.
Guild Wars 2--I know it's an MMO, but something about joining 50 people randomly in a huge epic boss fight is amazing to me.
Darksiders 2--The whole game is awesome, more people should buy it.
Last year, it was definitely Dark Souls and The Witcher 2.
That's pretty much it lately.
I wouldn't say 'amazing' or 'masterpiece' but I finished Mark of the Ninja last night and that was pretty well crafted all the way through.
Dead Island in January of this year.
Notable games I've played since Dead Island that don't measure up: Braid, Uncharted 2, Portal 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, God of War III.
I have two games worth mentioning, the first of which is Portal 2. The humour, technical execution and increase in scale and scope from the first game made it a very special product, with a level of polish so rarely seen in a video game. Secondly, Heavy Rain was a game that had a big impact on me. It certainly wasn't perfect, but the mood and milieu really appealed to me, and in what other game is the main protagonist a depressed and haggard single-father living in a two-bit house on the bad side of town?
Fez was one of the only games I've played that actually consistently surprised me while playing it. It's almost more the experience of the game and the launch period of people solving puzzles together, than the game itself. But it's still important to say that the game is awesome. It is one of the most pleasurable and relaxing games to play to date, and it's the only game that came out this year this I think of when I try to remember this years best games.
Demon's Souls. Yakuza 3 & Persona 4 before that. MGS2 & GTAIII before that. FFVIII & MGS before that. Another World & Talmit's Adventure before that. My birth date before that.
Edit - Half Life & Half LIfe 2 permeate throughout, with a splash of Fallout, Morrowind, Oblivion & KoTOR. Deadly Premonition, Yakuza, Silent Hill and killer7 are worth noting.

Dust: An Elysian Tail (eat it aesthetic nazis!! this game is awesome)
it may not be a popular choice, but i agree with you wholeheartedly. i loved that game enough to play through it (ending with a total time of around 18 hours) in 2 or 3 sittings, which is pretty high praise coming from me, as i tend to play games in small chunks of a couple hours at most. I would also put Skyrim up in that category, although i haven't actually finished it yet. Again, probably not popular choices, but Dragon Age: Origins and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning left me pretty amazed, despite the fact that there wasn't anything particularly original about them.
Chrono Trigger; I feel like every element of that game, from the charming fairy-tale plot to the great music, comes together to make a game that really is spectacular, timeless, amazing, and showpiece for how video games deserve a place alongside movies and books as a legitimate form of great entertainment.
That was sometime in July. I've played good games since then but Chrono Trigger is an amazing one.
Rayman Origins. I can't stress it enough. I was so fucking blown away. I knew it was going to be good but, man. The art, the controls, the perfectly balanced difficulty. If you have the slightest connection to platform games, starting at Super Mario Bros., you NEED to play this game. It's cheap as hell nowadays too. They better make a sequel or I'll freak out.
I can't even remember, it's been awhile. I'll say that I'm playing Uncharted 3 right now and it certainly plays well, and looks incredibly beautiful.
I'm going to split them into exclusives:
- Multi-Platform: Portal 2 (or possibly not as while I wanted to give the game a standing ovation and I sunk a little inside when it was over, but I know it is something I would never want to play again - so if it has to be something that's ovation-worthy every time then I would probably go back to Mirror's Edge)
- Nintendo: Skyward Sword
- Microsoft: Mass Effect 2
- Sony: Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
I ain't gon say amazing, but some of the last couple of games I played that I really enjoyed.
- Yakuza 4
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Bastion
- King of Fighters XIII
Honestly, I would say Mark of the Ninja. I think it's a flawless game, from top to bottom, and I had so many great moments while playing it. I will definitely be going back to finish all the optional objectives, and trying to finish it on the harder NG+.

let me hit you with this: my friend is a brash young bon-vivant that drinks a lot, has a lot of sex, and barely plays video games. He also happens to be a supremely cool guy (no, not because of the drinking, sex, etc.) with a pretty keen sense of humor. He'd boot up GTA:SA every so often to put in a bunch of cheats and beat the Christ out of cops for a half hour to unwind, but that was about it.
So he needed to unwind from having all that sex and alcohol?
SR3 was great, I never liked SR until the Third.
Regardless, RDR was the last game to touch me. Deep down in my gut, my soul was torn from that game. MY SOUL!

I really liked a lot of games this gen, but when it comes to a game that I just didn't want to ever stop playing the last few of those were PS2. Dragon Quest 8, GTA:SA and SoTC are the last games like that I can remember. If I try to think of all of them, 1990ish -> now, I might be able to fill out a list of 10. Maybe New Vegas from this gen.. maybe, I don't know.
Mass Effect 3. I remember thinking throughout playing it that this game was perfect. Well, at least, up until the last five minutes. But honestly, other than those five minutes, ME3 was a complete masterpiece. Before that, i'd give it to Skyrim
I finished Borderlands for the 5th time including DLC yesterday also i finished up a Kerotan run through of MGS3. Thats like my 4th playthrough of that game. I got all of the trophies for that game.
I hesitate to call Borderlands a masterpiece. It has A LOT of really bad things in it, but it is pretty fun.
MGS3 however is a great game. THAT ENDING. I get a little misty at the end. Everything about that game I love. The Bosses, the story, the characters, the scenarios, the gameplay, the weird easter eggs.
Really those are just two games I played yesterday. If I were to list and talk about all the game that I think are amazing we'd be here all day.
Chronologically? By release? Bastion. I'm using the highest level of masterpiece, which is something I think I would show to my children to make them happy.
Since Bastion, I really like P4A and The Walking Dead, but they're not Bastion.
From this generation I'd put Mass Effect 2, Bastion, and ... let's just say those two. I'd be excited to show my children these things as I would Star Wars, or the Lion King.
