I had the same thought and after about a day, I think it's staying white until they change the layout again. I went from mixed feelings about this new layout to loving it.
I am liking the new menu's. Looks clean and also on the older version when I would go to the forums menu it would be layered behind the top stories scroll bar.

IE still has a decent chunk of the market and I am sure they will want to get it looking as best as it can on all browsers. It isn't like people are demanding IE6 support. I think the problem lies with IE not using the same standards as the rest.

Honestly, I don't see the point in it, it hasn't improved functionality and to be honest its just made it rather annoying when mousing over different sections and having it fill half your screen.

See, that's far more pleasing to the eye. The logo would have to be more pronounced but the fact that it stretches across the whole screen puts the focus on the site rather than it always being drawn toward the floating logo in the top.
Another thing bothering me is that the menus for messages and profile and such open automatically when you hover over them. I far preferred it when I had to click to bring it up because then I won't accidentally click anything. And the bold on the sides and top is still bothering me some, the letters look odd, but I can't put my finger on why.

I agree with pretty much everything here. The logo off by itself looks odd, and the drop down menus get annoying. That mockup looks much better. It's not a huge thing and I'm sure I'll adjust, but that would be preferred.
Looks like it wasn't an April Fools joke. Great... My main problem with the new layout is that it is too damn big. It takes up too much room, while displaying no new information. There also should be a background for the Giant Bomb logo and your user info. Sometimes if you're on someone's profile that stuff can be unreadable. This whole change was utterly pointless. No one was complaining about the layout this site has used for almost three years.
@HandsomeDevil: I agree, why make everything so bulky, bold, and huge, when the purpose is to provide information. That is what a website is supposed to do, right? The site is fine though, but I really loved the old one. It stood out from other gaming sites on the web.
I only recently found out that Giant Bomb and the other Whisky Media sites are supposed to have favicons. All it takes to have it work in all browsers rather than most of them is replacing the line <link rel="icon" href="http://www.giantbomb.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> with <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.giantbomb.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />.
It's literally one word that has to be added to the source code.
I don't know of any other sites with as many IE specific issues as the Whisky Media sites, which just screams "we don't care".
Eh, it's not as if I visit Giant Bomb for anything other than the videos and the podcast.
All caps is annoying, especially in the search. Let's say I type "Ar Tonelico" into the search. Now there's no way of knowing that it's actually "Ar tonelico" (lowercase T). I might actually think that it's supposed to be in all caps. That actually tripped me up once.
So please stop shouting search results at me, and tone down the all caps elsewhere too.
After messing with everything a bit, I am really feeling the changes, except for the ALL CAPS in places and the logo. There is just too much white space around it for my liking. It just looks really odd all the way there.
I like it. I really like that clicking on my name takes me to my profile, I got used to how it worked but it was always something that felt "off" to me. Sure the top could be compressed but for a site like this, with this much content, the pixels you'd get back is negligible.
I really like the subtle little radial grad at the top.
