Hey all, I tried to turn on my PS3 the other day and was greeted by a red blinking light. I'm pretty sure its the YLOD but my PS3 has never overheated, it sits horizontally, the fans are never loud, and I wasn't playing a game when it died. Now I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will have to replace it or get Sony to fix it (even though its out of warranty and its Japanese to boot) but I just wanted to see if others have had the problem occur for seemingly no reason what so ever.
Thanks Folks

Alot of ppl with the launch ps3, 60 gig version had a YLOD, I know I did and countless others. It happens because the motherboard is warped and soildering is loose I think, which is a heat related problem. If you only had that happen now, that's good because it's really late for a 60 gig version for that to happen.

It's happened to me twice, if it's under warranty they will repair it for free, if it isn't and you have no other use for it check this video guide

Or if you don't want to do that, then it's fucked.

Well mines a 40gb, the bluray drive died about two weeks ago, I had that replaced and watched one bluray movie in that time. I then went to switch it on and it died. It just seems so weird for it to die so arbitrarily. When my 360 died it happened while i was playing and the screen went all fucked up, with the PS3 nothing just a flashing red light and beeping. ahh well I guess I'll get a new one and try and fix the old one.

@HitmanAgent47:  is correct. Apparently Sony uses an environmentally safe lead free solder that has a tendency to break from the heat. I would call and ask if they would have any problem fixing you japan ps3 first or just buy a new one, because i have seen a lot of people who have reflowed there ps3 only for it to die a week/month later and you would have to find a new drive anyway.

When did they stop?
It will cost you $150, well it used to.

Maybe they stopped when they rolled out that new Protection plan stuff.

I've never had it with my PS3, though my brother did with his when he was back in college a few years ago. I have no clue as to how it happened though.
