So I was bitching about fantasy fatigue in another thread. Wanting to vomit if I see another Elf using a healing potion on his balls, while he's stabbing a Dragon in the balls, next to a Wizard that's shooting lightning out of his balls. When it comes to RPGs, the only other option is Sci-Fi.

Any of you nerdy loser geeks know of any RPGs set in present day? I know Parasite Eve. Some other dudes mentioned Alpha Protocol and Persona. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Can't recommend Persona enough. I'm pretty sure all the Shin Megami Tenseis are set in present/near future.

Yakuza 4. It's not exactly RPG but it has a lot of the similar elements such as levels, xp, spending points on abilities, a good story, inventory management, equipment, crafting and a ton of side content.

Deus Ex isn't modern, but not the generic Sci-Fi or Medieval of most games.

vampire the masquerade: bloodlines was made by Troika (rip), and Alpha Protocol was made by Obsidian (which was formed by some of the guys from Troika, actually. Troika being a company formed in part by former employees of Black Isle Studios)

Obsidian is based in California.

STALKER, while set technically sci-fi, is only set a short while in the future and isn't a Mass Effect style space opera story, so it might be something that would interest you.

No one's already said The World Ends With You?

Also, I wouldn't call STALKER an RPG.

Stalker is just a more logical and realistic fallout 3 without VATS, from a gameplay standpoint. You don't level up, but you DO get better gear (and unique gear) as you progress, as well as doing sidequests and stuff

I would personally say that games where you only get better gear are Action-Adventure. Consider something like Metroid where you advance only by getting better gear/power ups.

Anyway, it's probably best not to start a whole "what is an RPG" debate here. So, um, I suppose I retract my statement for the sake of not making this thread go wildly off-topic D:

Shadow Hearts is set in early 20th century Asia and Europe. Not present day obviously, but close enough.

It's definitely a setting that should be used for more RPGs.

  • Nier (slightly)
  • The World Ends With You
  • Costume Quest
  • Deus Ex series (near future)
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Devil Survivor series
  • Persona series
  • Pokémon series
  • Earthbound
  • Devil Summoner series (I think)

@Laketown: All RPGs I listed are fantasy, unless you mean the specific sub-set that games like the Elder Scrolls franchise take place in. If so, that's wrong as there are no elves, potions, dragons (in the traditional sense), swords, magic... The Pokémon games fully take place in modern day and each region the games take place in are even directly inspired by real world locations (such as NYC with Pokémon Black/White).

@FluxWaveZ: still, it's different than TWEWY or even persona; those world's are like our own, yet something strange happens to that world. Pokemon is a fully new world, even if it is based on real world locations, they still aren't in the real world.

but whatever

@Laketown: Yeah, but that's not what the OP was searching for. Costume Quest isn't set in a real world location either, but it's still set in present day. It's all about the time and not the space.

And Persona 3 and 4 are just set in real countries, but not real places, so I'm not sure what you mean.

I was hoping to see something like a traditional and long RPG but instead of fighting giant spiders, robots, mutants, you're fighting muggers, bums, stray dogs. Instead of leveling up magic, armor, swords, you're leveling up tasers, tire irons, football helmet stats. Instead of joining a Guild, you join the Boyscouts, etc.

But I looked up all of the suggestions and they're all definitely the closest I'm ever gonna get to that. Even if I'm still shooting mini dragons out of my balls to fight in Pokemon, like I said, it's the closest I'm gonna get, so thanks.

Shenmue games. They seem to get classified as RPGs, even though they seem more like Adventure games to me. I believe the second one is backwards compatible so it can be played on the 360.

Jagged Alliance 2. While it's more tactics-based, it's still one HELL of an RPG.

It might be easier for people who are unfamiliar with the series to wait for Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. Older titles can sometimes be difficult to get into.

Almost don't want to answer such a god-awfully written question, but...

If you've got a DS, and I think every human being is legally required to own some form of DS at this point, The World Ends with You is fantastic.
