Basically what the guys are giantbomb are doing is very similar to what porn sites do,
Typical case, you just wont keep the userbase over time, they will move on.
I do not know why people think their sites will last forever,
simple economics, you just dont get it

Fuck. So many threads...
Whoa! I just had an idea! What if Giant Bomb added a porn section! Am I right?
All the complainers are just haters who can't afford to support the hard working staff @ GB. Get a job you bums..." @kratier said:

Yeah.. I've always wondered how this site has been able to support the amount of work going into it. It just doesn't make sense money wise to keep everything free forever. However, sure I can go to gametrailers or kotaku for reviews, but I don't really want to. I visit giant bomb because they're different, they're more fun and the personality of every staff member really shines through in everything they do. People seem to forget that these are people working full time to entertain you for free.
" I do not know why people think they are automatically entitled to quality services and products for free. "Because it's not the 50s. We have the internet, competition, and smarter economics.
Nothing like a porn site. The site is FREE. Free, people. Free. Free. Free. Sorry, I malfunctioned. Free.
Look, they want to do something extra and want money from those willing to pay for it. Apart from the podcast there's no reason why you can't use the site business as usual. Porn sites don't give you content for free.
" @rflx said:LOL! I think I just pissed myself...smarter economics." I do not know why people think they are automatically entitled to quality services and products for free. "Because it's not the 50s. We have the internet, competition, and smarter economics. "
God the forums today are basically a case study of what happens when you alter something in a society.
The people who havent paid are desperately trying to justify not paying, and almost every person who has paid is desperately trying to justify the fact that they just effectively flushed $50 down the toilet for charity.
Should be interesting to see if we've returned to normalcy in a week or so.

Fucking idiot.
lol, oh wow.
first, you pay by being a viewer, they make revenue off of you through ads and selling your email address/internet traffic to other sites.
second, it looks like this shit has already started, a small devoted userbase of jaded fanboys supporting a half-dead website in the making. 50$ is not a lot of money, Its the principle.
The devoted fanbase will dwindle, the userbase will move onto the next free site.
peace

Go away.
My friend is a very popular radio broadcaster who has done an AM and FM geek oriented talk radio show for almost fifteen years. He has been subjected to layoffs because of massive company failures (CBS) and format changes (Entercom). He has been subjected to idiot consultants, program managers, and other suits. The length of his show, the content of his show, the number of commercials in his show - even the EXISTENCE of his show... were always at the whim of commercial advertisers and corporate suits. The listeners and the show itself were always the least most consideration in any discussion.
So, when he was chopped again in 2009, we began investigating alternatives. I worked with him to point himself in a new direction and now he has a very successful internet based daily streaming/download radio talk show for and about geeks and geek culture. It produces about 15 hours of content every week and he is able to charge for subscriptions.
This means that he is no longer beholden to suits and advertisers. The content and continued existence of his show relies ENTIRELY on the audience. The listeners. The subscribers. The ONLY thing that matters is pleasing his employer (who are now the LISTENERS instead of the suits).
GiantBomb is doing the same thing. They don't want to sell out and have some douche bags tell them what to do and what not to do and control every aspect of their production that will turn them into another IGN or Gamespot. They are doing what is necessary to be able to afford to control their own destiny and cater specifically to ***US***.
Of course, this doesn't mean that people must or must not subscribe and support such efforts. Nobody should feel any obligation one way or the other. And that's the point. Nobody *is*. You get what you already get, but if you subscribe, you get a little something _extra_.
However, it *does* mean that you shouldn't be a cunt and get all bent out of shape that people are trying to make a living in some way other than bowing down to advertising (remember what happen the last time there was a confrontation with advertisers andc ontent that lead Jeff here?)
I don't get people who think everything should be CHARGED FOR on the internet. I also don't get people who think that everything should be FREE on the internet. As if the only person in the world who should get paid to work for a living is YOU and the rest of us should just do our jobs for free, for your benefit.
It sounds nice and certainly I understand the desire to make more money - I wish I had more. Unfortunately, for somebody like me, a college student with 2 part time jobs and still barely enough money to afford internet rather than any other form of distracting device, there is no way I can justify spending fifty bucks on a site I would otherwise spend fifty bucks on.
Like I said, I don't blame them for wanting to make money, it just seems like a bad time to start asking for this sort of stuff. Maybe it's the opposite, though. Maybe they're as desperate for money as a lot of other people. Either way, I wish them the best of luck.
So it's a bascially a porn site without the porn?
You just made things worse for everyone by pointing this out, good job pal.

Balls of Steel
My Dad just got "laid-off' it's not my problem. I wasn't appointed King Sympathy, guardian of all hopelessly unemployed.I'm 19, in school, work full-time, & have my own house. I work hard for the nice things I have & I worked hard to get the job I have.
Sorry if you're havin a hard time these days... it's hard, but not that hard. Suck it up & try harder.
The world isn't getting any easier & as you can see, shit isn't gettin any free-er.
People such as yourself are what gives this whole thing it's stench honestly.
I don't know why I even read these forums.
No the porn site is in reference to the cheap methods porn sites use to make their website seem like a variety of websites, and your subscription they claim will be for a variety of websites for the low low price of 60$ a year, when in reality its all 1 website owned by 1 person, trying to make a buck off of you.
" @jNerd: People such as yourself are what gives this whole thing it's stench honestly. I don't know why I even read these forums. "Nice 14 posts, you're opinion really matters....
How about you go outside & get some fresh-air then...
If you don't know why you're here... then LEAVE.

This is GiantBomb not MyDiary....
Seriously, THAT's your argument? Whether he has 14 posts or 14,000 posts, it doesnt make a shred of difference. You are still being a closed-minded arsehole to people.

Explain how I'm being closed-minded. You're just talking out of your ass." @jNerd said:

This started off as a false economics conversations, now I'm the bad guy because I've subscribed & don't feel like listening to the cry-baby haters.

And the BLLSL is on so i really don't want to type out the long answer for you to ignore.
"Ignore people with the medals, easy "
I don't like the idea of splitting the Bombcast either, but I don't think what you said is fair, as if people who have medals are some sub-species of forum user. I happen to want the HD content and less ads, and I don't think anyone is any worse for not subscribing. I'm really not even a big fan of having the medal for this very reason, but I don't think that having it instantly makes my opinions moot. I'll reiterate: I don't like the Bombcast idea, but I DO like the overall package, and that's why I signed up. Since we're both still members of this website regardless of how much we paid, I would like to still share the forum boards with you.

Does anyone think this will affect the social dynamics of the forums? The idea of "Gold", "Silver", and "Free" seems to risk creating social classes where paying subscribers are the "elite" and feeling (and possibly being) more valued by the staff.
That is not a knock against a subscription, just calling out and making those users so noticeable seems like it would cause more community problems in an environment where you don't need more problems in an already volatile social landscape.
