Let me start by saying that ant 'system wars' stuff is not welcome anywhere, let alone here.  This blog is about the exclusives that each of the consoles offer and the one with the best games will always be the games you like the most - everyone is right, no matter how different their answer is.

Also, I need to add that any errors in my analysis are not intentional, as it took a bit of work to establish what I did, so if you find any errors, by all means let me know.  This does not include any download games, just retail ones.  Also, I did leave out some games like Naruto, where each console has a Naruto game so exclusivity isn't really applicable.  That applies to a few others I can't remember.  Ones that also come to mind are all the singing (Singstar/Lips) and quizz (Buzz/Scene It) games as they are an experience not really exclusive.  Yes, I know that applies elsewhere, but I had to make a line somewhere and that is  the line I chose.   Also, I am ignoring PC, this is just about consoles.

With that out of the way, I though that it might be interesting to have a decent look at which games are exclusive to a console and how that compares.  My expectations were that they would all be worth owning and looking at the results, I believe that I am right.

42 games in total.   I have managed to accumulate 12 of those 360 only games.  I still need to add Tales of Vesperia, Forza 3 and Fable II to my collection.  A pretty decent set of games, but I suspect the most popular ones are the ones I don't care for - Halo and Gears of War.

For some reason Liberty City Stories isn't on Metacritic (the individual DLC is) so that should be on this list.

28 games in total, so quite a bit short of the 360 total.  I am not in possession of a PS3 and to be honest, not a lot of the exclusives are really my kind of game, but a handful look like awesome games that I would be very happy to add to my library - Demon Souls, Disgaea 3, Folklore, LittleBigPlanet and Valkyria Chronicles.  Obviously there will be a lot of love for Unchartered, Resistance and Metal Gear.

Edit: whoops, forgot Ratchet & Clank  :-(

Of course, as expected I would include the Wii exclusives.  Sure, there will be a lot of the usual hate and that would be a pity, but there is clearly a large number of well received games to choose from.  Those who don't enjoy what is on offer are only missing out on the fun.

98 games, but that is not unexpected as the difference to the HD consoles means that many of those made for the Wii won't appear on those HD counterparts.  I have mamaged to accumulate 41 of these games and quite a few more will end up in my collection.

I believe in owning as many consoles as you can afford, but also that any single console can still satisfy your needs if you can't afford more.  The PSWii or Wii360 is clearly a good second choice though as it really does give you the best of most of what is on offer.  As for me though, the 360 still probably pips the PS3 at the post as far as exclusives are concerned, only because of JRPG.  I never thought that would ever be the case.  Don't get your knickers in a twist when I say that the Wii beats both, because it is just a personal view.

Now it is over to you.  With you own tastes, which one is leading the way at this point in time?

I only own a PS3, but I'll admit the 360 has some awesome exclusive games I wish the PS3 would have.

I always thought the PS3 had more exclusives than the 360. Nice list, though.

What is your criteria for including a game on the lists? Because the wii has a lot more than 98 exclusive games, but a lot are crappy shovelware games.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that.  I made a cut off point of 60% on Metacritic.  That is a just a number as getting below that and we are getting into somewhat ordinary games.  That same criteria was applied to the 360 and PS3 as they also have a small share of very ordinary exclusives, more the 360.

As I said, I have kept this in the realm of home console.  Without a doubt, some games, especially FPS, play much better on the PC and with better graphics (assuming a high quality PC), but that isn't what this is about.  It is just console.  If there is a better version on PC, then you would buy that if it was your thing and it would cut the 360 list down quite a bit, but again, not what this is about.

Well, I don't own all three consoles.  I picked up my 360 first and then when I went to buy a Wii back in the day when there were none to be found, I settled on a PS3.  I'm one of those sales that Nintendo missed because they were unable to keep their merchandise on store shelves a few years ago.  It's a sign of success but also one of failure.  One has to wonder how many more units they might have sold back then if the console was as readily available as the 360 and PS3.  These were also the days when a PS3 couldn't get arrested for showing up pants-less at the playground.  But, the rumors were starting to circulate that Sony was going to kill hardware enabled backwards compatibility in the system, so I took the plunge.  For a long time there wasn't much to play on the PS3.  Outside of Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (which you left off your list), the majority of my gaming was done on the 360.   Over this console generation's life cycle to this point, I'd say I've gotten more enjoyment from the Xbox's exclusives like the Halo series, Mass Effect, Gears, Fable 2, DOA (DOAX), and PGR4 with a healthy dose of XBLA games, too.   Plus, as business is business, Microsoft did a lot of deals to gather timed exclusives and DLC exclusivity for some of their games like GTA4 and Fallout 3.   But, the tide is turning for my gaming habits.  Updates and exclusive additions to their library has me more intrigued by the Sony offerings.  Will the quality of their future titles be worth the exclusivity?  Who's to say at this point, after all Haze was also an PS3 exclusive so that means little if the game is crap.  In the end all I can do is make a judgment call as to where my dollars are spent and hope for the best that I am not too disappointed by the experience.

Ok, yeah, that makes sense.

And I noticed that Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party & Hottest Party 2 are Wii exclusives & both have a metacritic score of over 60 but are missing from your list. Or is that a case similar to the Naruto scenario you mentioned?

Yes, that does come to mind.  I figured that you can still get some DDR action elsewhere, so it really isn't an exclusive.  I am sure there were others I can't specifically remember.  Some others were left off if ion the PS2, even though they are not actually this gen, but still, it made no sense to call a Wii exclusive to something that is also on the PS2.

Well i think you should class it as variable,

If thats the case then why aren't Xbox, PS2, PSP and Gamecube exclusives classed if you are taking games from other platforms and calling them exclusives

It would have been nice if you had a mean score for each system and perhaps the standard deviation if you want to get anal. It seems as though the 360 has the best collection however it's been out the longest time. I'm happy with owning X360 and PS3, and at the moment I have no plans for getting a wii unless the new zelda game looks something special.

I don't quite get your point.  I left off Gamecube games like Pikmin and Mario Tennis because essentially, they are the same game.  I am aiming for a somewhat "exclusive" experience.  I also left off Phantom Brave because of its PS2 counterpart.  If I left in all the Gamecube and PS2 games on the Wii, it would have been a bigger list and then I would have been arguing why they should be there, but I don't feel it fits this blog.  I could have added a separate group for them, but it just complicates things.

As much as I am a maths geek, a mean score and standard deviation doesn't really mean anything when it comes to games you enjoy.  It is why I stated that there is no best console for exclusives, just the one that holds the most enjoyment for you (everyone).

I hate lists that include PC games, regardless as to whether you are doing JUST consoles, the fact remains that the 360 isn't the only place i can play Mass Effect, L4D, Gears of War therefore they are not exclusives. Simply saying 'but its only consoles' is not an excuse.

They are console exclusives though.  If I included PC and took out the 360 games, then I would have 360 fans complaining and rightfully so.  In anything you have to set your parameters and home consoles it is.  I understand your point, but can't use that criteria in a conversation I want.

Owning both a 360 and ps3, for me i definatley prefer what the ps3 has given me in terms of exclusive titles. My favourite game for the 360 that isn't on the ps3 is actually expansions for the multiplatform title GTA4.

@oldschool: but what you WANT surely isnt relevant, in as thorough a list as you have written, trying to get the best unbiased opinion of which has the best exclusives, allowing a platform to have 'fake' exclusives is showing blatant bias towards it and thus voids all possible opinion.

You are in the majority.  I tried to play Mass Effect and I thought that I would really love it, but couldn't get more than 30 minutes in before stopping and going elsewhere.  I think I am being unfair on the game and really need to give it a proper try.  I will eventually get L4D, but it is a 'bargain' game for me, as I am unlikely to ever play it online.  I have been tempted to try GoW a couple of times when I saw it cheap and eventually I will, but eventually I will, just out of curiosity.  I doubt I will like it though, especially with my motion sickness issues.  Fable 2 is a must for me, despite the fact that I didn't really like Fable a whole lot.  The new version with the extra maps looks like the one to get and it isn't very expensive.

I really do understand your point, but I am the one who gets accused of being a Wii fanboy and if I took out all those games, I would spend most of my time defending that.  They are 'fake' exclusives and I can't disagree with that, but as you say, we will have to agree to disagree for this particular blog.

I get all my RTS action on the PC (iMac) and I have Universe At War on PC, not 360.  Every RTS will be better on the PC, but sometimes, the slight dumbing down for the home console isn't the wort thing in the world and can still be a lot of fun.  Halo Wars isn't bad with what I have bothered to play so far.

I left of Lair due to its terrible score (under 60 which was my cut off).

The others really did slip past me and I have Lost Odyssey.   For some reason, there is no Liberty City on Metacritic, but there is the individual DLC.  Obviously it should be on the list for 360.  Otherwise, I have corrected the omissions and this makes the 360 even stronger.

You've left out quite a few it seems:

  • Katamari Forever, Beautiful Katamari
  • Command and Conquer 3
  • Ninja Gaiden (1 on 360, 2 on PS3)
  • Wipeout HD is on blu ray now (similar to Quest for Booty on that list), as is Siren: Blood Curse
  • Singstar, Lips, Buzz, Scene it?
  • Ridge Racer 6 & 7
  • Yakuza 3
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Episodes From Liberty City

Vesperia Chronicles is also on ps3 now.

The PS3 exclusives have served me well, with what's already been released, and what's to come too in the near future.

EDIT: Just seen people point out a couple of those too.

Katamari is like others where you can get much the same experience even if they are not exactly the same game.
Command & Conquer 3 fixed.
Ninja Gaiden is Ninja Gaiden, so see k\Katamari.
Singstar  & Lips (and any karaoke game) are much the same thing, as is Buzz and other quizz games and Scene It is now coming to Wii and PS3, plus is still another quiz game.
Ridge Racer 6 & 7, see Katamari.
Yakuza 3 fixed (had that highlighted and everything, but still missed it).
Lost Odyssey fixed.
Liberty City sort of fixed.

@oldschool:  I understand what you mean, but isn't it a disservice to dismiss them like that when you're trying to do an objective comparison. Being of similar genres does not mean they're the same game, nor does it mean that they are of equal quality.

This list is is also based on what has been released as of now. Even if a game is coming to another console eventually, it's still an exclusive.

i can't really decide which console has the best exclusives. every console has great exclusives (which makes it hard to choose).
i really like the 360 exclusives. Dead or Alive , Ace Combat, GTA IV episodic content, Left 4 Dead (not exclusive, but only for 360 on consoles). i can't say any of the other consoles have bad exclusives. PS3 has MGS4, Uncharted, Rachet and Clank, etc. and the Wii has Mario, Zelda, Metroid, no more heroes,   muramasa (X_X want to play that so badly.), etc.

I guess I am trying to work on experiences and a singing game is a singing game and it doesn't matter which console you have, you will be able to sing (except the Wii).  If I don't make some limitations, the whole thing gets out of hand as you can make an excuse to do or not do anything.  I am looking for what is ostensibly different.  Take my Naruto example.  They are not the same game, but if you enjoy Naruto, you will get that experience on more than one console.   Buzz and Scene It are both quiz games and the same in a general sense, so the exclusive part being removed from Scene It doesn't really mean anything as that isn't why I didn't include it.

Without some kind of limitation it just gets out of control.  I know that no matter what, I would get a counter argument and to be fair, they would have a point.  I can't please everyone, but I think I have been consistent in the approach.  Anyway, do we care about those casual games?

As far as exclusives go, I think the 360 is top dog.

Fable, Forza, GoW, Crackdown and L4D are kind of a big deal.  I couldn't imagine just having a PS3, as I'd have to survive without those games. (Of course, you could get L4D on PC, but that's another discussion.)

The PS3 has a couple gems, but most of them are kind Meh.  Of the enitre list, inFamous is the only one that I even have a desire to play, and I have absolutely no desire to actually buy any of them.

And the Wii...  No comment.

360 I'd say, especially with Mass Effect and Splinter Cell coming out.

But the PS3 does have some gleaming beauties... Demon's Souls, MGS4, Infamous. A lot of their exclusives are pretty "Meh", I find though.

@micke:

Why don't the Rigde Racer games count? It's like saying Forza Motorsport 3 and Gran Turismo 5 don't count because they give a similar experience. (I know GT5 ain't out yet, just an example)

I can't see this post anywhere, but it is in my inbox.  Maybe I am going blind.

Ridge Racer is on both consoles (6 & 7 I believe), so if you want a Ridge Racer experience, it isn't exclusive.  However, you raise a good point on inconsistency.  Forza and PGR are exclusive to the 360 as is GT (even if only prologue) to the PS3, so a car racing experience isn't exclusive to a console, especially with many other car racing games.  It pokes a large hole in my logic.  From that though, I am not going to change it because they are core traditional gamer's games and shouldn't be compared to Singstar/Lips or Buzz- I am being elitist (despite all those Singstar games I have and Lips as well).

When it comes to car racing though, the 360 is way ahead with 2 PGR and 2 Forza.  In fact, it has lapped the PS3  ^-^    If you love car racing (and I do), you can't go past the 360, even when a proper GT5 comes out (which I will get when I get a PS3).

" You've left out quite a few it seems:
  • Katamari Forever, Beautiful Katamari
  • Command and Conquer 3
  • Ninja Gaiden (1 on 360, 2 on PS3)
  • Wipeout HD is on blu ray now (similar to Quest for Booty on that list), as is Siren: Blood Curse
  • Singstar, Lips, Buzz, Scene it?
  • Ridge Racer 6 & 7
  • Yakuza 3
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Episodes From Liberty City
Vesperia Chronicles is also on ps3 now. The PS3 exclusives have served me well, with what's already been released, and what's to come too in the near future. "
By that logic you should be removing a lot of the Wii games from your list.  Grand Slam Tennis for example?  There are a lot of Tennis games on all platforms...

Anyways, I'd say PS3 has the best exclusives, 360 has the most good exclusives, and Wii has the most exclusives (but only a handful of them good).  I'd say PS3/360 is the best combination of systems for a normal gamer, but Wii is important to own if you want to experience all the consoles have to offer obviously.

Yes and I pointed out the major hole in my logic above with car racing.  However, I don't think it matters too much as if I go down that path, I would also have to remove all the FPS for the same logic.  Sure, it isn't a perfect science, but you have make a line somewhere.

I agree that if you can afford it, you should have a PS3 and 360, because clearly, any objective view would be that there would be some exclusives to either that you would want to play.  I know 5 PS3 games I really want to play and that list can only grow, plus the more marginal ones that would be picked up as well, but at a bargain price.

@oldschool: Yeah I deleted the post. What about Yakuza 3, it hasn't been released outside japan yet, should it really be on your list? Cross Edge and Agarest has been released on both 360 and PS3 in japan but is exclusive to PS3 elsewhere for now at least, does that count?

Edit: noticed Cross Edge has a crappy score on metacritic so it wouldn't count anyway

You may have deleted but it did raise a very valid point, which I covered.  As for Yakuza 3, very true as I didn't look into the very detail of all games.  I suppose you can import it due to no region coding, but it doesn't appear to have an English subtitle option making it somewhat difficult.  I did say there may be some things I missed or mistook, and I have tried to correct as many as possible.

Agarest looks very nice if it gets an English release, but it isn't on Metacritic at all.
Wow, Cross Edge has a range of 16 to 87 scores.  Thing is, I really like the look of it and I think I would get that, being a JRPG fan.  Scores are not to be all and end all.

I would say they are all tied.

Every system has games that I would totally play if I had every console.

Go ahead and get offended by this, but you have an incredibly by-the-numbers view on the game industry, and seem to believe whatever MetaCritic says, instead of going ahead and getting your own opinions.
