Hey theeeeere Giant Bomb, todays piece is much shorter than last nights snooze-a-thon about gaming ecosystems. Anyways heres tonights article

DISCLAIMER: THOUGH I AM NOT A FAN OF THE BIG BANG THEORY, I WOULD NEVER INSULT ANYONES PERSONAL TASTE. IF YOU LIKE THE SHOW I AM NOT ATTACKING YOU OR THE PROGRAM.

thank you

The Big Bang Theory: Symptom of a larger problem, perception.

The sitcom The Big Bang Theory is extremely popular, so much so that the show has been renewed up through the year 2014. Garnering at the series high point over 12 million viewers. I'm not here to bag on anyones taste or rip on the show. If you like the Big Bang Theory then fine, I wouldn't insult your personal taste. However, I would have you take a closer look at the shows writing and characterization of these people and understand that they are conveying a very poor representation of the modern "gamer". Now I understand that many of these characters aren't just gamers, they are genius physicists who work at Caltech or something like that. However, they also have ritualistic Halo nights, even a Wii Sports bowling team. They play games regularly and even have those awesome Dell XPS computers that are shown at just the right camera angle. Keeping in mind that this show is also a sitcom and designed to entertain I wont fault the writers for presenting an exaggerated version of these people.

Exaggerated or not, they are still delivering a misrepresentation of who we really are. One of them, so shy that he can't even talk when girls are around, the other who is so impressed with himself that he has a girlfriend  has to tell everyone all about it. Of course the worst perpetrator is also the series most popular character, Sheldon. Sheldon, who is so socially inept that he doesn't realize when he is insulting his only friends, and so anal retentive he has to knock three times, a series of three times. Many of these things get big laughs from viewers and that insistent laugh track that plays through every episode lets everyone know its OK to laugh at these ridiculous characters. I up until a point believed that Sheldon was the worst we would have to see, I was proven wrong with the introduction of Amy Farrah Fowler. A new female friend of Sheldon's who is basically just the female version of him but I believe even more overly exaggerated due to the fact that she is a woman. To make a character completely non-threatening, the writers have made her as awkward as they possibly can, a woman who has to go shopping for casual clothes. I understand, that these people are many things, not just gamers. But, there are so many nerd culture references made during the program that it's just all been lumped into one giant mess. While some may find these references and the reverential way they treat some of our favorite properties to me it always comes off as patronage.

There was an episode of South Park some years ago where Cartman was so insanely mad when someone just assumed that he enjoyed Family Guy. Often times when discussing games with friends or family members i often hear "you must really like that show Big Bang Theory, it matches up with you so well." Now I don't get upset or anything like that, I just let people know that the TV show wasn't really made for me, it was made for people who still don't understand who we are. Peoples who's perceptions of what a gamer is hasn't changed, and because of things like The Big Bang Theory never will.

I don't hate the show, I even laughed once when Sheldon was trying on tuxedos and came out with a lavender blue prom suit. The situation was just so wholly ridiculous I couldn't help myself. To those who continue to watch the show remember, this is what they think of you, this is what all their viewers see you as. This is what the perception of a gamer has become.

I like the show. I also know people just like the four lead nerds, which is why I find it both hilarious and endearing. The show isn't about them being nerds so much as it is about feeling like you don't belong in any one place, and how that can be a challenge to cope with in normal society. These four guys are still trying to cope/figure out who they are. It just so happens they're walking analogies of the Internet. If anything, I'd say the Big Bang Theory has romanticized the idea of nerds.

EDIT TO ADD:

Sheldon, Raj, and Howard are caricatures. They've never hidden that fact. Leonard is the lead, and he's the most "normal" of the group for that reason. He's the real perception of "nerds", of "gamers". He's an average guy for the most part. He just wants to enjoy his hobbies, his friends, and land a girlfriend to be with. I dare say that's not too different from most nerds walking the planet.

Yo, there's something called a parody, and this is it. No one, not even non-gamers, actually believes that physicists/nerds are like that. They understand that it's a stereotype taken to the extreme, and no one thinks that it has any semblance to reality. Therefore, sir, you are wrong.

This should definitely be either in the Off-Topic forums or on Screened.com.

As for your point, I sort of agree. I don't like the portrayal of nerds or geek culture in general in media but Big Bang Theory both makes fun of the oddities that exists within the culture and celebrates it at the same time. It's a way to integrate the nerd and geek culture into modern society. Also it's just a TV show.

The Big Bang Theory is bad humor at its worst. It's Two & a Half Men or the King of Queens, but with a nerd motif. The only demographic this show is appropriate for is moms over 40.

Its a comedy. Comedies generally make fun of stuff. You only have a point if that show was supposed to be a documentary.

I love that show. I should watch it more often. Plus, David is on the show from Roseanne. Good for him and Darlene is on there sometimes too.

I think you seriously overestimate the intelligence of the average Nielsen family. Stereotypes are called so for a reason, because people believe them.

The portrayal of almost anything in the modern media is generally full of stereotypes and inaccuracies. It's not just gamers.  Start to learn about any subject and I guarantee that you'll become more aware of how misunderstood the area is with portrayals in popular culture. A personal example for me has been psychology- the more I learn about it, the more I become aware of how many misconceptions exist. The people who write these shows don't really do the research, or they know the misconceptions exist but don't want to challenge them, instead choosing to go with the flow.

It's just a basic fact of the media.

@TheUnpopularGamer: I don't like the show but at the same time I would argue that what you just posted speaks more about your internal prejudices/beliefs about prejudices than the shows. Yes the characters play video games, and yes they are socially inept, but is there anything in the show that on face links the two? The same argument that you just made could be made by physicists, or white people. The fact that you picked out that specific character trait to attribute the negative portions of their character to really says that you think that the gamer portion of their personality is at the heart of their problems.
Moral of the story: Don't go calling out other peoples prejudicial stereotypes when you kind of subscribe to them yourself in a way.

@beej: Whoah, good point.

But, being a gamer myself who is no way shape or form socially inept and having many friends who are also hardcore gamers I can attest that i have no personal prejudice towards gamers. I also stated in the article that I realized that these people were more than gamers and that wasnt their only identifier.  Though you are completely right in saying that you could draw similar conclusions about physicists, but the show also lumps so many different personality traits together that the point could be made about anything.

At the very least I would concede that the argument could be made that its Nerd Culture itself that is being inaccurately portrayed.

@TheUnpopularGamer: You're right, it does lump a lot of different traits together, and in many ways those traits do form someone stereotypical of nerd culture, so to that extent you may have a point. However I would put to you that the amalgamation of all of these traits forms characters, and that these characters seem to be deeply flawed, and that maybe it doesn't speak to any culture, but rather to the characters.
Then again if that truly is my advocacy I might be granting the show too much credit, I'm not sure how much nuance it actually has in its writing.

I love the show, watching it since Episode 1.
And well...I play games and I study engineering, so I wouldn't say "they don't get what I am". I actually think it's really funny what they do and since I meet people somewhat resembling Leonard or Sheldon (the young very smart science guy) at university, I would say they do a good job of using them for comedy.
If you really feel that insulted, maybe you have a problem with yourself? Just saying...relax on what you are. If people actually tell you "you are like them" and it makes you angry, then maybe you just don't like yourself.

I can't stand Seinfeld... the humor just seems stupid to me. I'd hardly consider Curb Your Enthusiasm a sit-com (whether it is by definition or not). I also find it really stupid.

This blog: Symptom of a larger problem, blowing things out of proportion.

I think you need to realise that games are mainstream enough now for people to realise that most 'gamers' aren't completely socially inept and shows such as Big Bang theory aren't making people think this they are just playing on an old stereotype which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with 'gamers'  . As for the show I'm not a big fan but that's just my personal taste.

It's a sitcom. Sitcom characters by definition fit existing stereotypes. That's how sitcoms are created: you take a set stereotype, and mix it with others. Hijinks ensue.

You complain about the stereotype of the guys in the show, but I wonder why you don't mention Penny. Penny is a far more vicious stereotype than the guys, in my opinion. She's a dumb blond with delusions of being an actress, manipulative in her own way, self-centered and rude.

Personally, I love the show. A lot of gamers do, and so do many geeks. I think it's actually quite humanizing. The point of most sitcoms is to throw disparate elements together to create comedy, and the result is that we often wind up finding the characters endearing, even when their personal habits and choices are in conflict with our own values. And so we might think, individually, that characters such as Wolowitz are horrible human beings, by interacting with someone like Penny and someone like Sheldon, we are able to see beyond the stereotype to the person. I mean, really, Howard Wolowitz is a truly horrible human being in many ways. But it's hard not to be sympathetic to him after watching the show a bit. The same goes for Sheldon and Penny. As for its portrayal of gamers of a certain type, I think it's actually pretty reasonable.

How could someone be worried about a show like The Big Bang Theory when there's so much other stupid shit on television to genuinely be worried about? You must enjoy The Real Housewives of Blah Blah County.
You have every right to not like this show,  but don't come on here and bellyache about how it's perpetuating stereotypes. It's a fucking tv show. The stereotypes are put there for comedic effect. Nobody thinks that you are exactly like these characters. Although they're all super geniuses, and all in college, so besides the socially inept part, I don't see what's all that bad about them.
