It's either RDR or ME2, but I still need to think about it a bit more.
Your Game of the Year?
" @SPACETURTLE: Is CoP better than SoC? I was playing SoC and I liked it, but I ended up stopping because I just found I was just getting lost and confused =[ So, is it ok to play CoP before I finish SoC? Are they actually very different? "they aren't THAT different, but it's much harder to get lost; it's only seperated into 3 areas, rather than 6-7. I think it's the better game, and you don't really have to complete SoC.
the only ones i really played were red dead and mario galaxy 2 which were both brilliant.
oh and enslaved was good. and god of war 3.
OH AND MINECRAFT!!!
This is my first year in a along time where I had to think about this long and hard.
- Mass Effect 2
- Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
- Red Dead Redemption
And if Brotherhood didn't have Multiplayer it be 3rd.
But seriously all three of these games are in my top 5 games of this console generation so far.
Mass Effect 2, no question. Forget 2010, that was the best game I've played this console generation.
Mass Effect 2 hands down. That game made my decision to purchase a 360. Beat the game 3 times on Normal, Hardened, and Veteran. I'm probably gonna go back to it during my winter break and beat it on Insanity.
picking top 3 GB style, winner is SCII (and I could see this making top 3 for the staff as well, seeing as there were 2 TNTs and they sent Brad out to freaking Korea for the game, but doesn't hold enough universal appeal to make it), followed by Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect 2. Games that almost made it in: Bayonetta, Halo Reach, CoD Black Ops (haters gonna hate but it's still a very well put together game) and Red Dead Redemption.
Red Dead Redemption.
I was very impressed by this game.
haven't played all the way through AC: Brotherhood.
Mass Effect 2 for me. The game was super intense, with great graphics, sound, and characters. The pacing was a little uneven, but I think the game made up for that in other categories.
Fallout New Vegas is a pretty close second for me. Another game with some great characters that also has some really neat way to differentiate characters. But in the end, the tightness of production for ME2 wins out.
Red Dead Redemption would likely rank up there for me. It looks amazing, but I never got the chance to play it since I don't own an Xbox. I can only hope it comes out on the PC at some point.
Overall, a great year to be a gamer. My vote is for Red Dead Redemption. Not necessarily because I'm convinced that it's the BEST game of the year, but it was the best game that I played all year. One thing is for sure...I certainly don't envy critics/awards committees for having to name a pan-genre victor in this contest. Hooray gaming!
Not trying to troll RDR, as I actually thought that it was fairly awesome (especially the ending), but do people suggesting that it is GOTY material remember that 90% of the missions were just: go here and kill everyone, and the ones that weren't just that were often times worse. Weather effects, dialogue and the conclusion of RDR were all great but the game part was a C- at best to me personally.
I wanna say Mass Effect 2 because I love that game so much. But because of that ending I felt the entire main storyline was pointless. Everything else minus the last 5 minutes is GOTY material but those last 5 minutes are one star material so I'm gonna forgo saying that unless I get a big nostalgia trip. It's an unfair comparison I know because that's like saying the best sandwich you've ever had was ruined because the last bite was filled with dog shit. Well that dog shit lingers where everything else all seems farther away. So no, I say Mass Effect 2 is not my GOTY, but oh goddamnit I teeter on it the more I think on it. The action was so good and the characters too! AH! I don't know. I would say this is overall GOTY objectively but for me personally that ending is holding me back. Makes me wish I never thought about it or I stopped right before.
Beyond that there's Metro 2033, Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising, Monkey Island 2: Special Edition, and BioShock 2. I've played bits of Civ 5 and SCII and I would say if I owned Civ 5, that would be GOTY.
Probably Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising is my GOTY because of how much I fucking loved playing that and the full game all at once earlier this year.
Often the game part is borrowed these days and it's the "extras" (story, character, environment, music) that hook people in. For instance I support ME2 for GOTY even though its gameplay is just a reskinned version of Gears of War (it even runs on the same engine). But I felt that ME2's scale, characters, universe and presentation were unmatched by anything else this year." Not trying to troll RDR, as I actually thought that it was fairly awesome (especially the ending), but do people suggesting that it is GOTY material remember that 90% of the missions were just: go here and kill everyone, and the ones that weren't just that were often times worse. Sometimes the converse is true; take Mario games for instance. Absolutely no story or character development whatsoever and even the music and art style are somewhat recycled, but it weaves a vast variety of gameplay together quite cohesively.
It's about the experience as a whole I guess.
Also, I truly thought ME2 did enough with it's (admittedly recycled) dialogue system, improved biotic powers and a couple of really neat loyalty mission to make it awesome as a game and not just a story (like ME1). Just my opinion though, not word of god or anything.
Have to go with the obvious answer in Mass Effect 2. I loved the first game but ME2 managed to fix all of my major gripes with the original. Only thing that bummed me out about ME2 was the song that plays during the credits.
Runners up for me would be Limbo, AC: Brotherhood, RDR, and Bad Company 2.
It's either Dead Rising 2 or Fallout New Vegas. Ive never played the first Dead Rising so DR2 was a very unique gaming experience for me. On the other hand ive put 90+ hours over 2 complete playthroughs on New Vegas. Would definitely have been game of the year if it wasn't for all those crippling bugs.
It would probably be Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, though this damn Animus glitch is making me think otherwise.
Mass Effect 2 was interesting, but I disliked most of the changes they made. Especially to combat, I guess I was in the small minority who preferred the originals combat system.
I have to agree with the first post Mass effect 2 has to be mind simply for it gripping storytelling, the character interaction and they way you felt you were in the big open universe to explore. I also havea put and still am putting may hours in to this game.
A favourable mention gose to halo reach aswell.
