When Grand Theft Auto V ships on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, it's also getting a long-requested first-person mode.

IGN and CVG revealed this new feature, which Rockstar Games claims is an idea that's been kicking around for a while. Modders have implemented first-person modes into Grand Theft Auto games in the past, but GTA V's re-release marks the first time it's become official.

Here's a screen shot of GTA V in first-person, courtesy of IGN:

Oh wow that's pretty neat. Now I already played the hell out of this game last year on 360 so not sure that this is enough to get me to buy it again anytime soon but it is good to know that they are making some nice changes for this version.

@roboculus92: There's a mod for the 360 that will let you play in first person. It's not as good as this, but it's been around since June.

That added detail does make it a lot more reasonable to push the camera up against the textures. Some of the cockpit detailing looks a bit low-poly but I guess that's just because we're all used to really detailed modelling of that stuff in dedicated titles and we'll have to lower expectations.

After dumping 60 hours into closing the campaign last year, I was going to wait for this to become a budget release but I might just have to get this sooner rather than later. The first person means I'll definitely be waiting for 2015 and the PC release, time to exercise those Battlefield reflexes and jump between mouse/keyboard for walking and controller for vehicles.

Wow. That looks awesome. I sort wrote off this game because I played the hell out of it last year, but this might get me to play it again.

huh, neat! I wonder if this will make combat on PC easier. I'm looking forward to the PC port and all the things they added for XBOX ONE/PS4/PC. I hope the PC port is good and not GTA IV all over again.

The video of it looks absolutely remarkable, like it was designed from the ground up to work as an FPS.

Very impressive.

I can't wait to play this again. It will be interesting to experience the sense of scale in city from ground level, looking up at the buildings rather than just staring at the road the whole time. I wonder if the game play will feel vastly different with much less situational awareness.

I'll get this on PC down the road. That's an awesome addition that I bet will allow for some interesting mods.

If they didn't do this PC users would have created it.

OH YES.

I honestly have a really big problem playing third person games (I really couldn't get into Shadow of Mordor at all because I just couldn't get comfortable with the perspective and camera controls), so I was one of those who'd install mods for GTA III etc. back in the day to play them in first person, even if the implementation didn't work well.

Sets things up for oculus rift support too :D

I won't going to buy GTA V again, but then I saw the cockpit views. I guess I'm dumb enough to buy any game that has a cockpit view for cars (actually, not really...but I will stupidly re-buy GTA V).

As much as I usually scowl at HD rerelease, this seems absolutely incredible. If yo haven't watched the 1st person trailer on IGN, go do that. Holy cow...

It'll be curious to see how easy R* will make it for modders. They do not have a very good track record with that stuff. At least not since GTAIV.

Don't think I'll be using it much since I don't like losing my sense of my surroundings while driving but it's definitely a neat feature to have. If it's just a camera switch away I'd probably use it for shootouts.

@probablytuna: Apparently you can customize the camera very extensively. Most possible situations have a separate toggle in the options menu (for example: driving in 3rd person, first person on foot, 3rd person cover etc). You should be able to customize it just to your liking.

If they add an achievement/trophy to play through the entire game in first person mode I'll freaking do it. With the video material you can tell they put effort in it.

I'm glad i waited for the PS4 version instead of getting it on PS3, It's nice to see Rockstar do something more with the game and not just a nicer looking port.

Yeah, I decided early on not to play a great deal of the last gen version because of the constant rumors of a next gen version getting released and the fact I was selling my Xbox 360 to fund a PS4 anyway.

Holy Crap!! Rockstar and Bethesda both seem to have a magic ability to create games that are bursting at the seams with content! I was 50/50 on getting the PS4 version, but the footage of GTA V in first person action sealed the deal.

How much more embarrassing is Destiny's lack of content, in light of ambitious visions like this being realized? 10 minutes of GTA V or Skyrim offer more entertainment and jaw dropping moments than 2 months of wasted Destiny playing time.

I hope that it can be played in third-person during combat, but in first-person while driving. Always preferred playing driving games in cockpit view, and have wanted this added into GTA for a long time

I am so down with this.

The driving and flying looks excellent with the level of complexity and detail (all cars having different and working dash consoles).

I played through the entirety of GTAIV, TLaD, and TBoGT on PC with the (admittedly janky) first person mod. Glad to see that R* is implementing something official!

I was considering getting the PS4 version to tide me over till the PC release but then I heard you can only transfer over your gta online stats once from last gen to current. I don't see mention of current gen transfers to PC

Well shiiiit, I own this on 360 already and for some reason never got around to playing much of it at all. I wasn't really planning to get this on PC, but after watching the firs person perspective videos, I don't think I have much of a choice anymore.

Just in time for school in January, great!
