I consider a Hamburgers not a sandwhich just becuase of their style.

Sandwhiches tend to be more healthy and with things like tomatoes and lettace, while a hamburger tends to have cheese, thick meat and ketchup.  And is soaked it pure fat.

In my mind, a hamburger is most certainly a sandwich. I don't discriminate what is and what isn't a sandwich.

I've stopped trying to understand the technicalities of sandwich ever since I was presented with the idea of an open sandwich. If a sandwich can be open, the word loses almost all meaning. Not that there's another word for it, but it's wrong and it must be stopped.

I'd consider a hamburger a sandwich. A sandwich is basically two slices of bread or a bun cut in half, with whatever you want to put in between. There's peanut butter sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, roast beef sandwiches, etc... A hamburger is no exception. It's a hunk of meat between a cut in half bun, with whatever vegetables/toppings you want. It's definitely not your ordinary sandwich, but I'd still call it a sandwich.

A sandwich to me is items pressed between two slices of bread, so yeah, I'd call a hamburger a subset of a sandwich...  Although... that brings up what a Big Mac would be in relation.... hmmm....

I normally think of a hamburger as just a burger, but if you were to classify it, it follows the sandwich criteria.

A hamburger is warm/cooked. If a Sandwich can be warm I'll say why not?. Cooked, boiled or whatever, then a Hamburger is just a warm Sandwich. So yes, then it's a Sandwich by all means!

I believe that hamburgers are a sub-category of the sandwich category.

But if meat inside bread is a sandwich in ALL cases is a HOT DOG a sandwich? Can a cold hot dog be a HOT dog? Does the addition of actual dog meat make a hot dog hot doggier?

All very important questions.

I think that depends on what you would classify the sandwich as.

Is it its own food menu category? Or is it a mere subcategory of lunch?

If it's just lunch, than the hamburger is more a cousin of the sandwich. If, however, sandwiches are full food menu categories, then the hamburger is indeed a type of sandwich.

Personally, I believe that the sandwich is a subcategory of lunch. For those saying its a sandwich, don't let the man tell you what to believe. BK and McDonald's want you to call it a sandwich... that's what their coupon books tell you. Don't give in. Live the dream.

sand - wich
    -noun
    1.  two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.

It seems to me not only is a burger a sandwich, but one of its ultimate forms.

Cue DBZ sandwich reference from Vinny.

A sandwich, according to Wikipedia, is a food item made of two or more slices of leavened bread with one or more layers of filling...with the addition of vegetables or salad. A hamburger certainly meets those requirements and so I can only conclude that it is a sandwich. However at what point do you stop? As mentioned in one of the videos: is a hotdog a sandwich? If the hotdog roll is not joined at one side, then it to must also be a sandwich.

Yet the problem continues!

As said by CaLe, a sandwich is normally cold, but a hamburger is hot. So maybe the temperature is what defines a sanwich? But there are problems with this as well: many sandwiches have hot components such as grilled chicken etc.

According to Wiki[edia a hamburger is a sandwich: A hamburger (or simply a burger) is a sandwich that consists of a cooked patty made of ground meat and is generally served with various garnish or condiments like ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion, relish, pickles, and cheese toppings, placed inside a sliced Hamburger bun, often baked specially for this purpose, or pieces of bread, toast.

I therefore conclude that a hamburger is a sandwich, not a subset of sandwich, but a sandwich. Unless of course, hot sandwiches are a subset of sandwiches, but if we go there we could be here for hours.

I think you could make a sandwich with some ham, lettuce, cheese etc. but with a hamburger patty on there as well and call it a sandwich. So I think if you introduce a different meat that isn't bacon you can counteract the label and it then becomes a sandwich. So if you put a steak and hamburger on two slices of bread that becomes a steak and hamburger sandwich.

It all began when I banged my head while walking up the stairs. When was the last time you put a patty in a sandwich? In my case, last wednesday, but for most people - and for the sake of this argument - I am going assume never.
This led me to further discoveries when I went for the ice-pack in the freezer.

There they were, twinkling like a box of beef patties in the sky - except they were in the freezer.
The name on the box exclaimed: "Hamburger patties, 12 per pack (approx)".
"What the fuck" thought I.

To finalize these discoveries, I took a trip to my Uncle's farm. The road wound long into the distance of a crisp midwinter horizon.

So in closing, meat is murder.
Delicous, sandwich-subset murder.

I would like to know if the Earl of Sandwich fathered any children.  And if he did, does the bloodline continue?  If so we must seek out the Scion of Sandwich and demand answers.  Tasty tasty answers.

But that would also apply to hotdogs.. and hotdogs are certainly not sandwitches or hamburgers. That is why TWO peices of bread must be involved.
