That's what i got on my desktop. Fantastic. Well just wondering, does anybody know how this gargantuan number of viruses could have evaded my "symantic" anti virus program? I mean i dont go on my computer for about a week and suddenly bam, something callled "window's xp anti virus" or some crap like that tells me i have over a thousand viruses on my computer rendering it nearly useless. Could it be from a single day or possibly a build up of viruses thats been in hiding. I dont know, maybe somebody can help me out with this.
...1699 viruses
I mean porn would be the obvious answer, but i am usually unaffected by the sites i go to. I mean at this point i think it would be a good idea to just wipe my comp clean and reinstall all my games and such. But is there any chance for permanent damage? Because that would really annoy the crap out of me and it would also mean i would have to spend alot of money for something dumb like this.

1699 viruses? sweet jesus man get a girlfriend and leave the porn sites alone :P
But in all seriousness i'd suggest trying to use an anti-virus and anti-spyware or adware program to remove as many as you can. If you're system is running ok with the 1699 viruses it might be worth you're time trying to delete or clean them out instead of wiping everything.
Wiping everything is pretty handy, though. I've done it before without serious damage to the computer. It just depends on if you have a level 63 Morrowind character or not, really. Do you wanna lose that?
I've come home once, checked my email, left for the shops, came back and had 17 viruses on my computer, called Vundo, which actually removes your desktop icons; My Computer, Recycle Bin, the lot. It also removes your ability to access display properties, control panel, system restore, regedit, sysmon, and constantly tells you to buy their anti-virus program (which'll probably lead to CC fraud or similar if you did buy it). It took quite a few hours to fix.
Now, I'd recommed getting SuperAntiSpyware, it is a free program that'll scan your computer for trojans; sometimes picking up things an anti-virus program doesn't.
Another is Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware, another free program, that'll do the same. Scan your computer with those once a week or so and also do a anti-virus complete scan once a fortnight or once a month.
Also, when removing viruses, disable System Restore, then do the anti-virus and trojan stuff, otherwise there is a chance the virus can come back through a restore point.
There's no such thing as "Window XP's Anti-Virus". There are a lot of spywares that shows fake antivirus programs and tell you to go to a site to clean your PC or suffer inevitable demise.
Never trust the word of an application you never installed in the first place, it's a scam to get you to buy the product. There's probably some spyware and some viruses/trojans on your PC but it was that software that put them on your PC.
Go over to Bleeping computer for the removal instructions.
After you've gotten rid of it, uninstall Norton and use something else because it's horrible, bloated and doesn't work. I use Avast and have been for four years, never had a problem. It updates frequently and the updates are really small
Just having anti-virus isn't enough though, you should consider a multi-layered approach that includes trojan scanners, a firewall and anti-spyware software as well.
Comodo Firewall
Spyware Blaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
Ad-Aware
A Squared
MVPS Hosts
MS Defender
Combine these with safe browsing habbits and you shouldn't get infected.

Go buy the new Norton 360 2.0 & see if it will remove the viruses. It also includes anti-phishing system for the browser. Switch to Firefox if you haven't already. I don't trust IE. Also, I posted last week on Off Topic that Zone Alarm Force Field had a 1 year free trial license (it was one day only). It's an anti-phish add-on/plug-in as well that gives stats. It works with Norton 360's so I leave both on. My box is as snug as a bug in a rug.

My friends computer once had 3500 odd viruses ... it was the computer equivalent of an AIDS patient.
-_-
firefox + noscript , avg, kaspersky, linux OS...these are all good options to not fail and get viruses
and lol @ thinking all viruses come from porn sites
gb needs to lrn2computer
you probably downloaded 1. Which was the Windows XP Antivirus, and in turn that is either telling you that you have lots of viruses that in fact you dont; in order to get you to buy something, or it contacted a server and downloaded a bunch of crap onto your computer without you knowing and all of that just propogated.
It only takes one bit of Malware on your computer to end up getting five hundred more. I dont know if we are allowed to name drop on these forums, but you can download a program called ZoneAlarm for free that is slightly annoying but is good at keeping malware from making outgoing connections. And also SuperAntiSpyware remover is worlds better than Spybot or Adaware, the two latter purposely exclude some spyware programs in order to get you to buy full versions.
To clean your computer start it in safe mode, run your antivirus. Then run your spyware remover (SuperAntiSpyware), then run CCleaner and do a registry clean (make sure you create a backup when it asks), Reboot the computer normally and do a Virus/Spyware scan again to make sure you got everything.
I thought this thread was going to be about the Black Death and Leprosy.

"might just be some spyware shit trying to get up in your base, and infect your fioles."
Oh Christ, I don't even know what the fuck a fiole is but I sure as Hell hope mine are protected.
window's anti-spy might in itself be spyware that is trying to trick you into buying it. so that it can "delete" the viruses that don't exist
you might be getting fished. dont fall for it
just download security task manager to find the virus's process and end it, then use the info given to remove it completely
"i am amazingly lucky however that my world of warcraft did not need reinstalling"
Technically that makes you unlucky.
I got something like that it's a trojan virus that's what mine was. It installed this program called "Antivirus XP 08" and it changed my wallpaper to "Spyware found use virus antisoftware" or something like that. Just use a program called "Malwarebytes Anti-malware and run the quick scan and it will get rid of everything.
