A few months ago there was a strange smell coming from my TV, it happened for a day and then went away. Since getting Gears 3 when I turn on my TV initially there are very slight staticy sounds coming from the TV for about 5 seconds and then they stop.

Today however it smelt as if there was something burning inside it. Now we have the same smell in work when we have the heater on and it "burns" the dust so I was thinking that it could be happening here, also googling it the main answer is that its perfectly normal.

If its no real danger I don't mind, I just don't want it to set on fire or something stupid like that XD I'm pretty sure it's out the warrenty as well :/

So is this normal and perfectly safe, or would it better to replace it?

I'd check the wiring first, and if its not the wiring maybe throw the TV out so it does set fire to your house.

Is it a CRT? I'm expecting it to be. If so turn it off at the mains, leave it a half an hour or more for the big capacitors to discharge and open her up. Only do that if you're not some sort of fool. Capacitors can blow slowly and leave their electrolyte around which can stink the place up for a while. But dust is likely. A man of repairs said you can extend the life of electronics hugely by dusting all the crap out of them once a year or two.

A lot of LCDs suffered from capacitor plague. My freeview recorded had it and I replaced the whole lot for under a quid. I'm a tinkering little monkey, though.

Maybe have a pro look at it if you're not qualified to decide if it's ok? Doesn't really feel like the kind of thing you want to take chances with.
