In psychology class today I learned an interesting thing about how pigeons can be superstitious. Since I am not too good at explaining stuff, I'm going to copy and paste from wikipedia :P

"One of Skinner's experiments examined the formation of superstition in one of his favorite experimental animals, the pigeon. Skinner placed a series of hungry pigeons in a cage attached to an automatic mechanism that delivered food to the pigeon "at regular intervals with no reference whatsoever to the bird's behavior." He discovered that the pigeons associated the delivery of the food with whatever chance actions they had been performing as it was delivered, and that they subsequently continued to perform these same actions.

One bird was conditioned to turn counter-clockwise about the cage, making two or three turns between reinforcements. Another repeatedly thrust its head into one of the upper corners of the cage. A third developed a 'tossing' response, as if placing its head beneath an invisible bar and lifting it repeatedly. Two birds developed a pendulum motion of the head and body, in which the head was extended forward and swung from right to left with a sharp movement followed by a somewhat slower return. "

When he told this I got an unreasonably funny mental image, that had me laughing randomly for the rest of class.

It's also funny because it demonstrates how indifferent humans and animals really are.

The video of the little dudes in action is really interesting to watch.  I used to have the link, but countless reinstalls later it's lost to me.  I'll try and find it later.

Thats cool and all, but...dude, the last chapter of Super Freakinomics.

Nothing beats the first ever recorded case of Monkey Prostitution, Monkey Jailbreak and "Bank" Robbery.

Nothing.

They had to stop the tests because of that, except it was the Robbery first, the "Jailbreak" second and the prostitution a few minutes afterward.

Edit: They were testing if they could teach monkeys the value of "Currency", where they would give the monkeys some metal discs and teach them to exchange them for treats and such.

Its no laughing matter - these were some important early experiments that made huge discoveries about human and animal psychology.

The findings of that experiment directly added to our understanding of why humans believe in the irrational, the human desire to unconciously seek out patterns in everything and our pre-dispostion for gambling.

Psychologists! We do it on the couch! YEAH!

Yep, I remember reading about various things in psychology and Skinner's a fun guy to learn about.
